Lyrics
Deep within the Peliger Hills,
Where the land is thick with magic,
There lived a lizard named Gervase,
Whose life was rather tragic,
For he had kindness, wit, and speach,
And he longed to be a wizard,
But who would ever think to teach,
High magic to a lizard?
So poor Gervase would sit and dream,
Or sigh there sadly ruing,
The fate that kept him ever,
From good he could be doing,
One day as he sat dreaming there,
All in the forest sunning,
He heard the noise of horse and hound,
And sounds of two feet running,
A human stumbled into his glade,
A human worn and weary,
Dressed in the shreds of a wizard’s robe,
His eyes past hope and dreary
The magic of his birthplace gave,
Gervase the gift of speaking,
So he hesitated not at all,
But ran to the human squeaking,
Hide human, hide! Hide in my tree!
He danced and pointed madly,
The wizard stared, the wizard gasped,
Then hid himself right gladly,
Gervase lay down at once in the sun,
Until the hunt came nigh him,
Then like a simple lizard fled,
As panic seemed to try him,
He glowered in his hollow tree,
And when they came too near him,
He bit the dogs upon nose,
Until they learned to fear him,
Damn that wizard! The hunter snarled,
He’s slipped our tracking neatly,
The hounds have clearly been misled,
They’ve lost the trail completely,
He whipped the dogs away from the tree,
And sent them homeward running,
Never guessing he'd been tricked,
By a clever lizard's cunning,
The wizard out of hiding crept,
Saying much thanks I accord you!
Is there some gift within my power,
With which i can reward you?
I want to be a man like you,
Gervase cried out unthinking,
A wizard - or a man?
Replied the mage who stood, unblinking,
For I can only grant one,
The form of man or power,
Whichever one choose swiftly,
I must leaver within the hour,
Gervase thought quickly,
Who would except a mage who was a lizard,
But still he knew his dream had come true,
He chose to be a wizard,
Now in the councils of the Wise,
There sits a welcome stranger,
His word is sought by high and low,
When there is need or danger
He gives his help to all in need,
And pledges to defend them,
And every helpless creature knows,
He lives but to defend them,
Now no one cares what form he wears,
Human, man, or lizard,
Beloved by all both great and small,
Is Gervase the lizard wizard,
You know, a part of me is reasonably convinced this story exists entirely for the sake of being able to say "lizard wizard" in a vaguely serious context.
Have you heard of the thrilling and wonderful tales of Salem the Salamancer and his chilling adversary Newton the Newtromancer?
He's a very active wizard, he doesn't just monitor the situation.
Some call wizard lizards heinous, I prefer to call them varanus
I don't know what's funnier:
Picturing Jervase as a monitor lizard or as a tiny gecko.
Monitor is probably more likely since he made the dogs fear his bite
Or a Komodo dragon?
@@gretelschroeder3027 Good point, those things are huge and they have a venomous bite
🐊
Alwayse makes me happy that he becomes a wizard.
"...I thought you'd see it my way."
When the bard beneath your window is cutting at your bottom line, it may well be time to cut back, yes.
Now I feel an irresistible need to make my pet lizard a wizard hat.
Maybe make him a wizard tower instead.
"HE CHOSE TO BE A WIZARD"
I could almost see this as a kids story book.
almost? i can defo see it
i kinda wish there was an animated version of kethry telling the story to clan liha'irden
I could maybe do it
@@calypsiomoonlight9455 That would be amazing!
@@calypsiomoonlight9455 I would love it if you did this.
@@KiumyKun i shall do it one day when i got No other projects to work on then
@@calypsiomoonlight9455 I'll be looking forward to it!
And that's the story about how Gemando the Plague escaped the Hero's tracker and the worlds lost its only chance to avoid the end of humanity.
What a cute song :)
This is pure gold. Thank you Savitar.
Just today I saved the life of a lizard, which was viciously attacked by my cat. Strange that I stumbled upon this song :D
If you can find that lizard make it a beard and a wizard hat
You saved your cat's life Gervais was about to fire-ball him.
I’m crying 😭
If I ever have children I will sing this to them.
Vaughn Bode' "Cheech Wizard" character, who is generally believed to be a lizard.
So this is how Saurial learned her Magic^^
I had a little wild magic little lizard Jo Jo in D&D 5e, who collects tooth both subtly and violently as a discount tooth fairy
Jo Jo, who made a wish too big for his own good, currently in an enternal lecture by some sort of time god on why he shouldn't mess with time
is the singer meant to Kero's Grand mother Keth. I believe she told this story to the Shin'a'In after she was proven to be a good mage. I understand that Tarma's people where un sure about magic after the mass murder of the hawk clan by a evil mage.
I believe this is actually sung by Heather Alexander, as Kethry, but I might be wrong.
No, Heather Alexander has a slightly deeper voice.
@@nizzle1931 Actually, my mom has a tape of Heather Alexander music that includes this song. The tone difference likely comes from small differences in recording equipment if I had to guess.
@@nizzle1931 correction to my previous statement, it is Cecilia Eng according to the tape.
Thank you for confirming!
So unfair the dogs got whipped when the didn't lose the trail for a second.
sometimes to fool the master you have to fool the beasts first
Sep 13, 2015.... what was i doing?
If he became a Wizard why didn't he turn himself into a Man?
I think he didn't because he didn't care particularly about being a Man other than it would be easier to get magery training, but if i remember the story correctly a line not in the song is that the wizard that he saved also offers to train him.
Also, he became the wizard due to magic in his home, but there was only enough for one or the other, not both.
He does. This is addressed in the song, that none care what form he wears.
@@brionbearclaw7476 I'd care. Tree lizards are only 3 inches long. Where will he sit at the wizard council meetings? What if I step on him? His wizard powers can't make up for all of that all the time, it's unsustainable
@@philbabb6460 Gervase was a Pelegir creature, a humanoid lizard about three feet tall and bipedal.
Not a lizard. The song is misleading . Hertasi! The lizard folk. Another creation of the Great Adepts, who shaped species with their power. Some claim Urtho made them, possible , but then.. A thousand tales are told of the mage of silence, a million feats attributed to him. To hear the wildest ones .. he shaped the moon and put the sun in the sky.
The Gryphons are his legacy and they are enough.
This isn't a hertasi though. Gervase came from the Pelagirs near Shin'a'in territory, and gained sentience due to the wild magic present there. Hertasi live in different areas, along with a different mindset
@@doredam8919 Aren't Hertasi generally in Hawkbrother territory though? That *is* in the Pelagirs, so it's not an unreasonable guess if one didn't already know the specific story.
In Oathbound Kethry states the Gervase was a Hertasi, and he was an influential member of the White Winds school. Either the Mage Winds trilogy or the Mage Storms trilogy also talk about Gervase being Hertasi.
