  • I was helping clean out a old building and found three Evinrude outboards. These motors have not been run in years. The owner of the building ask if I could try to get them running again. This is part 1 of the journey.

    You have stumbled on a gem there for sure! I have always liked these engines although they have a few unforgiveable engineering flaws. First, the crank/driveshaft splines love to rust. So, it is important to get the gearcase off every year so you can clean and relube the splines/check/replace the driveshaft oring. Failing to do this will result in driveshaft getting stuck into the crank splines and possibly rusting them out. The good news is that these gearcases are super easy to remove and reinstall because they have no shift rod connector! The next flaw is the lack of a bushing between the reverse gear and the rear prop shaft seal housing. This results in wear to the housing and jumping out of gear. This is a real big problem on engines used on tenders or sailboats where reverse gear is used often. The other issue is the classic upper water tube grommet getting swelled up by salt water. Nonetheless, these engines run great and will last a long time with some extra care.

    Excellent video! I’ve got a real smooth 1980 model evinrude 4.5. I sure do with I could run across one of those 7.5s too. Thank you.

    Hey ! First good news for 2023, Om is back on the net !!! Those OMC 7.5 and 8 hp were (and still are) light, reliable and surprisingly torky engines. All the best to you and your loved ones !

    Lucky find! I have a 1980 Johnson 7.5 that I got cheap and have running like a top. Its on a 12 ft jon boat. The prop hub spun so I need to get that fixed but over all, I'm really pleased with this motor.

    Nice! I'm hoping to find a 1980 14hp evinrude thermostat replacement video because that year has it buried down in the cowling. If anyone knows of a video please reply.

    Still haven't done anything with it, But I have an 18 hp Evinrude outboard on my Dads old 73 Monarch jon boat that I need to tend to. Dad had it running years ago and it sounded like a sewing machine then but Dad bought a Carb kit for it because he said it wasn't running right. I'd really like to get it going again but don't have a lot of time of money to invest in it.

    Why does this one idle so well? It idled like a 4-Stroke!

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  Рік тому

      The reason that this motor runs so well is I have went through it. Timing is right fuel mixture is right everything is set to OEM spec. These motor will run like new, if shaft seals and reeds are good. What happens is most people will just put up with hard start of don't idle good as long as it runs.
