- London’s Waterways Are in Crisis - Take Action Now!
London’s rivers are in trouble. Every single one of the city’s 41 rivers is polluted, and a third of the sewer network remains unmapped. Meanwhile, raw sewage continues to spill into our streams and rivers due to widespread ‘misconnected’ pipes.
The long-awaited Thames Tideway Tunnel - the so-called ‘Super Sewer’ - has been hailed as the solution to London’s sewage crisis. But without urgent action to fix misconnected pipes, it will only ever be a partial fix. These faulty connections allow untreated sewage to bypass treatment plants and flow directly into our waterways.
Local councils have the power to enforce repairs, but in many cases, misconnections are left unresolved for years, leading to persistent pollution.
Alice Roberts from CPRE London warns:
"Clearly, the current system is failing. We are facing a mounting sewage crisis. That’s why we’re calling for a dedicated central team to take responsibility across all London boroughs. This will ensure enforcement is effective and put an end to the relentless flow of sewage into our rivers."

We need to hold the Mayor to account and demand real action for cleaner, healthier waterways.
