  • Raw sewage was discharged into rivers in England nearly 375,000 times by water companies last year, according to the Environment Agency.
The UK government has said that this is unacceptable and is promising a 40% reduction by 2040.
‘Citizen scientists' have been taking samples from waterways near their homes to find out just how much sewage and other chemicals are in the water.

This is what happens when you privatise utilities, who they raise their rates, reduce staff and then their investors pocket the profits. They are insured against operational losses, which includes fines. I would like to know just what the EA meant by reviewing their approach to the way they handle pollution at the sewage works. Maybe 'working with the polluter to find a mutually acceptable solution ' is a lucrative strategy?
I know that if my septic tank leaked and polluted the local river, they would have been down on me like a ton of bricks. I would be slapped with a fine, given an improvement order on an impossibly short timetable, if I couldn't comply they would carry out the necessary works themselves, slap me with the bill and another fine. One law for the rich ...

As an ex treatment plant operator for 26 years and a former construction worker I know that when people have an extension built or a big conservatory, instead of having a soak away to take the rain water which can cost a lot they opt to allow there run off to be put into the foul water system because it’s cheaper, thus when it rains millions of gallons of water flood the sewer system causing pollution, I wonder how many of the people moaning about pollution are responsible for it happening.

Individuals are often limited by how much money they earn and may find the extra cost of dealing with this unmanageable, the big companies have lots of money and there are meant to be laws prohibiting them from dumping that waste- they can better afford the costs of either increasing storage and treatment capacity or separating our waste water and storm overflow systems and it is roads that contribute most, large water proof surfaces that require miles of drainage- the run-off from the roof of someones extension or conservative is way less than the road outside their house- the big corporations want to blame us for everything! I am supposed to have water soaks, septic systems, insulation and solar panels installed on my house at MY expense because I am damaging the environment when energy and water companies aren't even maintaining our infrastructure- let alone performing upgrades? Meanwhile billionaires can feel free to hide on mega-yachts and have caviar flown in by helicopter, then hop on a private jet to the other side of the world for fun and feel no guilt. Purchasing offsets to shift the blame onto- an inevitably poorer- someone else? Don't think so! Problem is expecting individuals to take responsibility doesn't work, because their personal beliefs and economic situation become barriers- the blame needs to be placed squarely on those who deserve it- the mega-rich who can afford to make our world better but who continue to pollute and fail to change because it is not profitable- the same ones who make individuals too poor to do anything by hoarding all of our resources for themselves!

Privatisation of these vital services was a deadly mistake. It doesn’t pay shear holders to keep the environment healthy. I love capitalism and the freedom to better one’s standing, but we the British public need a serious discussion about the running and ownership of our Gas, Electricity, Water companies etc. Robbing the people blind and contaminating the land we pay them to protect shouldn’t be allowed.

It's actually extremely simple to test such an idea in reality. Why would a private company want to do XYZ? To make money. Now... *where* exactly are they making that money..? And *is it moral* to be making money on this service..?
I'm all up for public utilities being public, but then we also have a problem of corruption and squandering of public funds. It's as if good people never get into power for *some mysterious reason* - I wonder what that could be... Just thinking how Rishi Sunak gave his banker cronies billions in tax cuts a day before announcing energy prices sky-rocketing and energy companies gloating in record profits. It's as if there's an incentive to be a total scumbag when you're in power...

But, at the end of the day, the ultimate problem is the same - humans. Whether it be hate, greed, sociopathy/psychopathy or whatever it is that makes some of them disregard everything good for personal gain. Good people only get to make the rules when they unite in great numbers, but good luck seeing that happen with any reasonable haste or harmony... History tells us that it always happens at the extremes, when it's already late and will take more time/force than would have otherwise been necessary.

Thanes Water £14billion increase in debt over 32 years and £7billion increase in dividends. Investment to separately treat surface water from waste water has to be borne by either water customer or tax payer or else UK residents will have to get used to the environmental/ health/ legal costs of waste water and sewage being regularly dumped into their rivers and sea. With privatisation, the increased efficiency/ innovation/ revenue are supposed to create cash for dividends and investment.

For Thames Water, debt increased by £14billion over 32 years and dividends increased by £7 billion. With privatisation, shareholders expect cost cutting and revenue increases to mainly go to them. Water customers do not want to pay the true cost of water treatment and infrastructure via larger bills or higher taxes to fund upgrade to deal with surface water separate from waste water.

2.5 births for each death, limited resources on the only planet humans can live on, and only the smallest percentage of the intelligent population stops to look at the reality and do the math.
Meanwhile, some smug humans are proud of themselves as they "save the children" in third-world countries, so that the cycle can repeat itself because they can't stop mating like ignorant animals.
Humans are a pitiful joke in the Universe.
