You can hang with the blues dentist crowd all day .. but not the manly man crowd who realize that the size of your tube chassis is a direct reflection of your $perm count.

I remember a German guy doing a very German thing: he measured the actual output of the mt15 and it was around 28watts if I remember correctly. So it's very close to a 50 watt 6l6s amp that most of the Times runs at 35-40watts max.
Anyway, great video, I love my mt15 tonally so you definitely have to mod the mt15 to an mt50 so then i will have an exscuse to do it too.😂

You damn right we wanna see that mod. The value is real!
The MT15 was my first/second tube amp, and while I loved it, I didn't yet fully understand FX loop and 4 cable method with a noise gate, so I moved on and did all pedal gain/chain into a clean power amp.
Now I wanna get another and do it right, but I still love my Revv Generator 120 that covers everything!

I’ve owned the mt-15 3 times now. Sold it twice just to try other amps out. 3 years later, I have yet to find anything I like more in the lunchbox category. (Including the Engl fireball).
This amp just does everything I need, including being able to keep up with a drummer. But I would love to see a video of how to do the mod !! And how it fares after the mod.
Kyle, you’re awesome !! Keep it up 🤘

I actually played a few fantastic shows with the MT-15. I wound up putting an MXR 10 band EQ in the loop with a Fortin 33 in front...and a Decimator noise reduction pedal. My ONLY complaint was that it was noisy and the Decimator just barely worked. A friend had one and he did the wattage upgrade and did a noise gate mod and turned that amp into a highly desirable beast! I now have an ENGL Fireball 25 ran the same way, which you inspired me to get, Kyle! Haha, so, thanks for all you do, loved the vid and the video format, your bands sound really good too and seems like a really fun show! Also, I was today years old to learn that you play drums! Haha!

I absolutely love the sounds out of my MT-15. You don't need a boost for tight metal at all. The only caveat to it is that it's very noisy. You can kill the fx loop noise with a noise gate but there's still some hum going on that none of my other tube heads have. It's not a deal breaker but I wish PRS would fix the noise issues with a revision. Otherwise it's perfection.

    • @JohnWiku
      @JohnWiku 2 місяці тому +2

I can't attest if they fixed the FX noise issues, as in they made a fixed revision.
BUT, I can attest that a couple of MT-15's I just bought, DO NOT have noise issues.
I boosted the shit out of them and they produce less noise than other high gain heads that I have. FX loop active or not, either using a straight patch cable or pedals, there's no noise like I hear from countless videos showcasing the issue.
I'm so picky with noises that I ALWAYS run a four cable method noise gate in all my amps, and the MT-15's do NOT need to be gated 😂😂😂

@@JohnWiku Yep..I had one when they first came out in 2018 and it was way too noisy but did sound great..I am a play at home guy only and the volume went from zero to WFO really quick..I hope they changed the volume pots taper so it will not come on so loud so fast..other than those 2 gripes I have considered buying one of the new ones too see if they made any changes.

about tubes, i once ran out of 6l6 to get my 60 watt 5150 combo back up, after a tube failed, but i had some old used blue glass ruby 6v6's. For a goof i plug them in and Bam! it worked and was still loud and bassey as ever, the little tubes stayed in the 5150 till death, 6 months use in my shop ! i was cranking it up often,

Happy to report that I purchased the 5881 version and it’s great and the loop has zero noise as I am sure some of you realize the original version had issues with that. I am currently running it with a Boss EQ200 using the 4 cable method which puts a 10 band eq in the loop and in front of the amplifier at the same time essentially giving you 2 equalizers both pre and post the preamp section, so I figured that is probably a good scenario for noise considering all the cables. worked for me just fine dead quiet, using cheap cables and everything. this thing is really awesome, honestly I think there was more hype around the problems that it had then how damn good it was. glad i purchased it.

Excellent video! I've loved the MT-15 for many a year now, though I never actually owned one. Though PRS said that it could not be done, I know of one MT-15 that has been modded to run EL34 power tubes. Might also have the 40-watt mod, cause that thing is brutally loud for such a tiny amp.
In our guitar family, we have several lunchbox amps, but they are all EL84 amps, a Friedman Runt 20, and a couple generations of Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister. I'm not going to give away any hard earned tips, but each of these EL84 amps can be made to sound positively next level, like much more expensive amps, by simple tube swaps.
    Keep the good stuff coming!

Kyle, would you agree then that the Fireball 25 would be sufficient for most hardcore/metal shows? I know it has 6L6’s but I don’t know anything about the transformer on it. I’d think the Fireball 25 would be in the same boat as this PRS maybe even a tad more headroom slightly?

I have a bunch of amps and cabs, these days, but back then, it was just me, my guitar, TU-2 and my block letter 5150. Well, I didn't find the 5150 until like 1997, so before that I went through a few other heads (Ultra 60, a Transtube and a shitty Crate Excalibur).

This was great! So my modern high gain style head, herbert diezel mark 2 ,from 2012, 180 watts, kt77 power tubes, says in the manual, great distortion at low, bedroom volumes and at high volumes in stage use, too. The distortion is mainly in the preamp tubes section, so all volumes can get great distortions. Unlike what i understood about 1960s, 70,s, 80,s Marshall jtm45 through plexi through 1959 super leads like Randy Rhoads and Eddie van Halen used initially for heavy metal full 10 volume setting playing, and fenders and voxes and high watts which i've never owned, which used both pre amp tubes and power amp tubes to create the best heavy distortions they offered, ALL (or at least most) modern high gain multiple cascading gain stages from1990's mesa marks, dual rectifiers, diezel VH4s in 1992, engl, vht fryette, soldano, metaltronix, ada mp-1 , through the 2000s with all the modern high gain multichannel designs , like krank, revv, 5150 III peavey evh, randall satan, recent omega, mi amplificatiion monolith, driftwood, lichtlaerm prometheus, etc, use only preamp distortion, and Clean power tube sound, even when the loudness volume is cranked up all the way or close, 100watts to 180 watts? So cream, zeppelin, van halen, ozzy, dokken, Ratt, had some power tube tone, but modern, metallica, periphery, meshugga, lamb of god, ghost, (kind of) bring me the horizon, and many other newer bands have no power amp tube tone? My luthier from 2010 who like phish and umphries mcgee and roots and floyd and jam music with fender guitars, had me thinking that power tubes ( at least in his traditional style rock) distorted like hendrix feedback live and contributed to tone. He had a little neo classical training, too, and his store sold me my peavey 6505+ combo. He said power tubes contributed a lesser amount of distortion and tone, it was a harder kid of sound tone, stiffer, but there. No modern, high gain multichannel revv generarator 120 3s have power tube tone cranked, are just preamp, tone? Why not just use a diezel, engl, ubershall, blackstar premp/ditortion pedal through the 2,000 watt solid state class d inexpensive P.A. or power amp and P.A. speakers? Sure, el34s and 6l6s and kt88s add a little frequency response and distortion variations and flavors, but overdriving them does not? I'm still saving for an Omega tube amp and Axe Fx 3 , so I'm not changing. haha. i know solid state power chips generally do not create distortion well, like the $300 randall 300 watt head my friend wanted but never used it's onboard distortion with, which was not a chip being overdriven, but a designed tube recreation, not a modeller, i tried to explain to him. He plays extreme thrash, death metal. He thinks because of dimebag, solid state guitar heads are best, tubes suck and are overpriced and guitarists just like them because they cost more than his Randall 1503 $300 300 watt head with an mxr full bore distortion pedal does. Because he bought for $300 a heavily used 5150 block letter Peavey 100 watt head that sounded weak , murky , and dull to him, so he said he's right, all other guitarists are wrong, and got angry at me. This is a lot to process, haha! I'm going with what you just showed in this video, Kyle! Thankyou! i need to stick with what the experts like you, Ola, Fluff, many others advise. Maybe sometime a tube power amp play thru test that accepts all kinds of power tubes combinations could be done to show what power amp tubes sound like alone, isolated, so we could get an idea of what their character is better.

      @metalfiend2112 2 місяці тому

On top of it all, a friend wants a new version of the all tube McIntosh stereo receiver for 2 channel home music he had in the 1970's in college. To listen to his aerosmith and Foreigner albums on an expensive turntable, which is cool to me. It starts at $9,000, for the classic tube sound of McIintosh, receivers now and goes higher. My guitar player extreme thrash death metal friend, however, insists his $200 2001 Phillips boom box with bass boost sounds as good as any home theater, except its not as loud. I just had to tell that story. I wonder what the modern $9,000 McIntosh all tube stereo receiver will sound like, tube wise, and what goes on inside, sonically. I know high end hi fi tube receivers have a clean smooth, warm sound, compared to thesolid state $3,000 dolby atmos 9 channel surround sound av recievers for home theater that are dominant. They're clean, clear, digital sonding that try to ad a little non digital tone to them , like mosfets do, to make the sound accurate, but not too sharp. but plugging a guitar into one will probly destroy them. guitar amp are mor rugged.

I did the 50W mod to mine and it’s awesome, you don’t really need to but it’s a great amp either way.

The problem with the MT15 is the noisy efx loop that afaik they've never fixed.

I definitely respect the MT stuff for cost and tone. But for me those small ENGL heads are the best in class.

Yep. My Fireball 25 rages. Beautiful and raucous cleans and gain. Full spectrum of tones. My 100w EVH EL34 isn’t bad either 😊

I've had my Fireball 25 for about a month. I have been using a triple rectifier for the last 15 years. I wish I would've tried Engl earlier.
I tried a MT about a year ago but the effects loop sucked and it had a lot of noise, even with a noise gate.

Intro :D. FYI, You can get a free decibel meter for your phone... NIOSH Sound Level Meter. I really enjoyed my MT15 until someone broke into our practice space and stole it. Tone wise for me it's the Archon all day, the other 2 are a little fizzy for my taste. An Arhon 50 is on my wish list. Great video, great amp, thanks Kyle!

Very cool amp, played a few. It's the only lunchbox amp I like.
It's just the headroom either, the G20 is noticeably darker the others. So dark that I don't like

I know youve tried the Marshall DSL20HR and JCM800 Studio that are also full sized tubes, do they hold up as well in the headroom dept as the mt15 does in your opinion?
Same question for the Fireball 25 if you dont mind.

IMO The PRS MT 15 is all you need for band practice and home use ! It’s basically a EVH 5150 iii 50w ! If I could go back that’s probably all I’d own !

Go with the Heyboer 4k 50watt transformer. Thats what I have in mine and it kills! Also, go with 6L6s. They have more scooped low and high mids. Overall, more guttural tone.

I actually like the 20 to 40 watt range lunchbox heads in a vacuum, it's just so difficult to find the sweet spot between not having enough gain & oversaturating the power amp.
