I thought the noon settings were more impressive than I initially expected, but after you tweaked the settings it made the amp tighter and cut through the mix better.
Your settings sound good but I think I would back the bass and the mids off a little bit and maybe back the gain to about 11 o'clock. I just bought this amp, the 5881 version, and I will find out for myself as soon as it gets here. Great video.
I loved this amp before this video but now this is like dating more homely girl in high school who gets super hot in her 20s! For context my other high gain amps are a dual recto and a Mark 4, amps that you generally run the presence quite low. This said, without thinking, I was rather conservative on the settings of this knob. My GAWD did this video make a huge difference and made me realize how conservative I was approaching my settings in general (this had not occurred to me). In particular the way in which the video was structured I see as nothing shy of brilliant. A more well thought out manner of dispelling this information simply does not exist. My amp truly came alive as a cause of your video. Thank you SO much for sharing your knowledge, I’ve now been smiling for 2 days!!
One of the many things I like about this channel is that you always play riffs while demonstrating an amp or gear instead of just solos, as many other channels do. It’s impossible to grasp any tone from just solos, so as a rhythm guitar player, I truly appreciate it John! Amazing work.
Wow, in the beginning, with everything at noon, I thought, "well, it's a decent enough tone." But the A/B in the end, whoa! Night and day! Great video, Jon!
I know what you mean! For low level bedroom practice it doesn't even sound so bad with the middle positions but opening up the treble and presence really opens up the amp!
Just got one today after like 4 years of watching all you content creators hype it up... And i am absolutely stoked... That thing is incredible and right up my alley in terms of tone and chugs... I use a 10 band in the loop and a noise gate and tube screamer in the front... And its amazing... 🤘
The sound you came up with really makes it feel like removing ear plugs! Really brings out the clarity without losing the beefy low end. I just ordered a Tonex pedal instead of this amp, I really hope I can still get a comparable sound!
From the beginning of using guitars and amps, I always came back to the sound of Marshalls. But I specially love Marks MT15. It’s such an amazing, heartwarming and nice sounding small amp. This series will show some nice variations of sounds on amps, nobody would have thought they sound so brutally different. I love your settings in the end of this video. I guess I will buy this “fun-amp” and I would love to see you using control of the Engl Amp right behind you 🤘🏻
If I remember correctly in an interview Tremonti did he said when they were developing this amp he took his favorite amp (can't remember if it was an Archon or a Duel Rec), he dialed it in to where he thought it sounded best, and told them to make that sound the noon settings on the MT15.
This amp is super sensitive regarding the interaction between gain, treble and presence. And it's biggest plus is, there is ALWAYS enough low end. Love it, though it's kinda tricky to set up without blowing all fuses
Sorry if I already posted this suggestion a few months ago but an interesting video would be that you dial the same amp with guitars in different tunings (E Standard, Drop C, B Standard and F# Standard or even more if you're willing too). We know that basically the idea is to lower the gain and the bass and increase the rest but I would be curious to see your results !
Nice video John ! I'm pretty much using the same settings as you do, but I add an OD in front and reduce the gain on the amp for more clarity (of course it depends a lot upon the cab sim you're using). I alos wanna say for people watching this video that you should really avoid pushing the master beyond 9 o'clock if you're using a loadbox. If you do so, your power tubes will get burned in no time and those 2 are not cheap + you might need a professional to do the replacement ans use the bias correctly. With the master at 9 o'clock you've got enough warmth and low end to really feel the power of this lunchbox head ! And if you try this setup in a real 4X12, you will understand even more clearly why you don't need to go higher :)
So damn well done. I have one of these on a shelf and really want to give it some love. I have come to similar conclusions over the past couple years but now you made me get back to it. Cheers from Nijmegen!
For mine, I have the presence set to max, and the treble almost set to max, maybe like 4:30. Gain is around 11:00 to help keep the amp more quiet. Bass around 2:00, and Middle around 3:00. Also boosting the amp with an Electric Eye Mud Killer. Sounds incredible!
Love the amp, love your videos, and love your shirt(Batman!)If I ever need input on a future amp purchase your videos are what I look for 1st. Not that you heavily influence my amps of choice but your playing matches with what I want out of the amp.
@@metalliholic You can definitely jam with it in your room and the half power switch on the back of the amp helps with that. That being said, the amp for it being labeled as 15 watts, (really it sounds like it’s well over 50 imo) is loud as shit and I’ve never been able to play it at even 2/3 of its full volume when I’m jamming with friends in doors.
Mate, ever since your very first video about "extreme settings", you completely unlocked all my amps! I have an MT15 (after 3 exchanges as they all came with an issue here and there) and my favourite setting on the dirt channel is with the presence at 3 o'clock , gain at 11 and an overdrive pedal behind it! I think the overdrive really tightens things up!
I've been playing through a MT15 for the past year. I really like the little guy, but he can be a little dark. Although it is a very crushing dark tone. I think it's great for recording, but not the best for a live mix. You definitely need to get the treble and presence up to bring the tone out front. What amazes me is how high you had the bass. My 5881 loaded example has huge, resonant low end which can get out of hand pretty quick. My personal settings are bass 11:00, mids 11:00, treble 2:00, presence 2:00 and gain 12:00
Great video. I like the video idea, you can do this for many amps. One thing I would recommend is showing how a few different IRs would affect the tone too.
Perfect timing! I just had to trade a new evh lbx-s bc it failed in a short time, this mt 15 was a different flavour of my usual sound.your other vid paired with the dv-77 really got me stoked on it more bc that’s my 1x12 cab speaker. Again thanks for the great content
Awesome job making this amplifier sounds great. I haven’t had much trouble to get a good sound out of these amplifiers, but I generally try to go for a hard rock tone in general.
Depends on the speakers you’re running that head through along with guitar pickups. Plug that head through a 2x12 Two Rock cab with a Les Paul or 335 with low wind PAF style pickups and it’ll blow your socks off with lower gain tones especially on the clean channel with the knob pushed out. I can nail Warren Haynes Soldano tones with that setup. So many people look at this amp like a metal rock amp but it’s so much more than that.
I don't think many people think amps sound best at noon, but it is a good way to get a baseline comparison for the amp's natural characteristics. It gives a good "baseline" if you will, which you can then scuplt as needed from there for the tone you're after. For me noon gives a good idea of the tones the amp excels at or wants to give which can in turn give a good indication on what genres it will be suited for best
Cool video and love the Dial In theme! This is what I do on all my amps and gives a great idea as to the range of sounds ! Did you have a noise gate hooked up with this MT15? Played this bad boy once and I remember it being very noisy.
It's a great amp my friend. I use reverb..Delay and chorus out of the loop.A tube screamer..Micro amp and a noise gate. Definately use a gate with this head or you Will get hissing noise.

Sweet! I just picked this amp up. I want to take the signal from the amp and plug it into my interface. Do I just take from the FX Loop out? I don't want to fry anything. Thanks! look forward to watching the other videos on this amp.
After hearing your preferred settings, I definitely preferred the increased treble and presence. That said I don’t feel like the mid controls do a whole lot, and the bass control even less. Paired with my comment above, I feel like this amp doesn’t seem tonally versatile. And thats okay because I like the core sound it has.
I LOVE this amp. I sold a Mesa Boogie to pay for it and I don't regret it! What pickups did you use for that tone? Most of my guitars use high output pickups like the Tremonti Treble or the Bare Knuckle Pickup Nailbomb. I only have the gain at 9 o' clock, bass at noon and the mids and treble around 1 or 2 o' clock for my Floyd Rose equipped guitar, and roll the bass back a tad with my others.
Really cool! When you where swipping the knobs from 0 to 10 I was trying to guess where you would set it, I was pretty close 😁 Is it the setting you used for the Tonex capture?
If dark high-gain is your thing, this sounds pretty good IMO, but I think for that I'd rather get a Peavey 6505 or maybe a Laney Ironheart which the Laney is actually great for a dirty blues sound too, very versatile for an amp intended for metal so I'd more likely go with that if I wanted a somewhat expensive but affordable all-tube amp.
I can get a good crunch on the MT15 lead channel when i stick with lower output pick ups. I also put an 12AT7 in v3, to lower the over all gain output. Definitely agree that the presence and trebles have to be cracked passed 1 o clock to have real impact.
I own one, and it is a dark and muddy sounding amp that definitely needs modding. That and all the other noise issues that have plagued this amp from day one should've warranted PRS to go back and redesign it.
your settings sound better in the mix than on their own (i guess that should be the point), but in either case they sound miles and miles better than all the knobs at noon
Sick bro!!! I am literally buying this amp, with the cab tomorrow. It's the older version with the 6L6 tubes. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about noise. Mostly from the effects loop. Any thoughts on that??? Thanks!
Run a boss pedal through the return, something with a buffer. Either ibanez pedals or boss have them built in. Read this on a forum on the prs website.
Damn Cool man! I have a little off topic question. The “live sound” IR on OwnHammer impulses, is supposed to be an “all around impulse” for live gigs or something else? It’s seems a silly question but I just want to know if it was made for that purpose or simply to emulate something else while tracking guitars! Cheers!
@@SonicDriveStudio thanks! I was trying some solutions for live presets on my HX stomp, basically hi gain, mid gain and low gain with ambient effects, so I put the “right” IR for every snapshot, but in the end I found that the “live sound” IR can manage well every snapshot I made.
Yeah I owned this amp and the presence needs to be close to 3 O'clock like you did, otherwise its not pretty bad :P Loved the amp while I owned it tho.
I was talking about the MT15 with someone who owns it and a M/B Mark 5:25. I also own a 5:25 but was surprised to hear the other person say that there was too much overlap between the two and that if you own a 5:25 there's no point and you're better off looking for something else. Obv, the 5:25 is super versatile and I've never had the opportunity to play the MT15 myself but to my ears, the MT15 can do more of a "raw" and "brutal" sound than the Mark 5:25. Any thoughts on this?
Can these lower watt heads work with 2x12 cabs that are the same ohms? If so will they sound ok or is their a loss of tone? I’ve been wanting to buy a low watt head but I don’t want to buy another cab just to use the thing. It put me on the hunt for a combo but the release of the mark 7 has me halted.
Does anyone have any experience with the 5150 Iconic combo? I'm debating between the two and would appreciate any feedback! I'm 98% recording at my apartment, and intend on touring this year. I would need to plug directly into interface, as mic'ing isn't really an option right now. At least not at full volume.
@@SonicDriveStudio OK. So can I do XLR from either into a Focusrite? I believe there's something about "balanced cab IR"? Forgive me, I'm new to the finer details. Haha.
@@SonicDriveStudio I wonder if that might be more of a determining factor. I have owned this amp for about 3 years and have recorded 2 songs using it. The first one was in E-standard and my settings were literally all controls at 12 noon except the bass and gain which were at 10 o'clock, boosted with a tube screamer type overdrive. Tone was perfect for the song but I wasn't trying to make the guitars super present in the mix. The 2nd one was in C-standard and I ended up using the Bogren Digital IRs that were meant for down-tuned guitars and my standard setting was again perfect. Without those new IRs though I had experimented with boosting the presence and Treble but it wasn't quite what I wanted but the IRs got the tone where I wanted it. I used to run the amp at your volume setting but eventually discovered I like the sound more with the Master at noon rather than at 9 o'clock. I'm using a load box so I can run it as hot as I want without killing my ears. I agree it's ungodly loud at almost any setting through a real speaker cabinet. This is one amp I will NEVER sell. And yes, like you said just use your ears, any particular tone isn't THE best, it's whatever is best for the song...
I think they fixed many issues in production since 18. I, too, have had no problems with mine, it isn't noisy, effects loop is awesome, and sounds stupid good.
Just returned one a month ago, was built in late 2022, had an unacceptable hum all the time even with everything on zero on the clean channel. They most certainly have not fixed the hum/noise problem, some people do get lucky and get quiet ones but it's a gamble. Great sounding gain on the amp though so I was pissed I had to return it.
@@SonicDriveStudio JCM800 and 900 were extensively used when I was a kid, I knew a guy who was "modding" them by adding LEDs to the signal chain and used tape to hide the glow. Another maybe interesting idea can be seeing if the "infamously dry" Marshall valvestate amps could be fixed.
Con el volumen master al 10% es imposible sacar el tono real de un amplificador de válvulas. Prueba a subir el volumen por encima de 60% y coméntanos cuanto ruido y hum genera, a parte de como cambia el sonido

Wow. This make me feel stuck between a mesa and the mt15. I haven’t checked the specks but any chance this thing can run into an orange 2x12 16ohm?
Bogner uberschall twin jet vs Bogner ultra Uber!
how would EVH 5150 80w compare to this Mt20
yoooooo please make mor eof these videos
I would like to! This one isn't doing so well though. I'll try again and see how it goes!
What’s the pedals u use gate drive ect
Damn Cool man!
I have a little off topic question. The “live sound” IR on OwnHammer impulses, is supposed to be an “all around impulse” for live gigs or something else? It’s seems a silly question but I just want to know if it was made for that purpose or simply to emulate something else while tracking guitars! Cheers!
It's voiced for playing on stage but in the end you can use it for anything!
Great!!! Really useful! Thanks a lot!😘😘
MOOOOOOOOOOORE!
Good video. How about peavey invective mh?
Also a killer little amp!
How about showing some settings for that amp ?
Jon has the MT100 been released? Apologies if so but have you reviewed it ?
It has been released but PRS has denied my requests and terms of reviewing it so far
@@SonicDriveStudio I hope you get one. I really enjoyed this review
Yeah I owned this amp and the presence needs to be close to 3 O'clock like you did, otherwise its not pretty bad :P Loved the amp while I owned it tho.
Killer amp!
amazing,
Have you captured this on ToneX yet?
What's the tuning?
TH30 please .. rock and metal setting
I made that video a while ago and it's waiting for the release...
Wish I watched this before I sent it back
I was talking about the MT15 with someone who owns it and a M/B Mark 5:25.
The Mesa Mark series are very different imho. Totally different beasts!
I have my self both amps and as much as I love both, I just can't see a huge overlap between them, quite the opposite actually.
That works fine! 1x12, 2x12, 4x12, all possible
Nice
Does anyone have any experience with the 5150 Iconic combo?
I'm debating between the two and would appreciate any feedback! I'm 98% recording at my apartment, and intend on touring this year.
I would need to plug directly into interface, as mic'ing isn't really an option right now. At least not at full volume.
In any case, you'll need a good reactive load for that!
@@SonicDriveStudio OK. So can I do XLR from either into a Focusrite? I believe there's something about "balanced cab IR"?
Forgive me, I'm new to the finer details. Haha.
This was bit too bright for my personal taste. I prefer darker sound with more presence and chunk with TS808 in front.
I came here looking for an Allman Brothers/Lynyrd Skynyrd Tone LOL
PRS MT15 sound great but not durable. It hums/is noisy when using the FX loop
What tuning are you playing in?
Drop C
I really want this amp but they just seem to have too many problems.
Hmmm mine doesn't have any issues
I think they fixed many issues in production since 18. I, too, have had no problems with mine, it isn't noisy, effects loop is awesome, and sounds stupid good.
Just returned one a month ago, was built in late 2022, had an unacceptable hum all the time even with everything on zero on the clean channel. They most certainly have not fixed the hum/noise problem, some people do get lucky and get quiet ones but it's a gamble. Great sounding gain on the amp though so I was pissed I had to return it.
@@TheMirrorify that's a shame! Sorry to hear that...
@@SonicDriveStudio if you have a quiet one don't ever let it go! 😂
How to make Marshalls sound amazing, if you play modern metal - this is what I am curious about.
Good idea! What Marshall though?
@@SonicDriveStudio JCM800 and 900 were extensively used when I was a kid, I knew a guy who was "modding" them by adding LEDs to the signal chain and used tape to hide the glow.
Another maybe interesting idea can be seeing if the "infamously dry" Marshall valvestate amps could be fixed.
Con el volumen master al 10% es imposible sacar el tono real de un amplificador de válvulas. Prueba a subir el volumen por encima de 60% y coméntanos cuanto ruido y hum genera, a parte de como cambia el sonido
