why are designer fashion websites so weird

- From Zara's wacky model images to Supreme's washi-tape style website. We look into weird and questionable fashion websites' design choices and how it affects user experiences. Thank you to the sponsor of this video: Brevitē. Check out their cute, convenient backpacks at www.brevite.co/itsdivya
Thank you guys for supporting my sponsors which helps to support me!
For one of my modules, we looked into conducting a "usability analysis" of popular fashion stores. This is essentially where you run a bunch of tests to determine how well a website performs regarding the user experience. If a website's crap you don't come back.
We used a scenario where a user goes to buy a jacket to test things like errors, how lost do people get on the website, think-aloud analysis where users say what they're thinking to uncover any issues, accessibility evaluation, how the website uses psychology principles to enhance the experience of shopping etc.
This is a condensed overview of some of the major findings and problems in modern fashion websites with known issues.
From a user experience point of view some of the choices make shopping more frustrating but can the same be said from a branding or visual aesthetic point of view?
Can we actually call these websites "bad"? Is the purpose they serve effective?
Note: I know that Zara is not a designer website by any means but they gave me Rick Owens vibes and were more "sophisticated" feeling in style comparable to some of the designer sites.

Trying to navigate the Zara website feels like being lost in the Twilight Zone; I literally hate this thing so much
omg I thought it was just me!!!
literally! it's so annoying
Same here!! I was seriously questioning if this was just me with this issue 😂
I have this issue with university websites...I'm looking at masters programs and some of these websites are truly trash...y'all charging all this money and can't get some decent web design??!
Uni websites infrastructure as old as some of their mindsets
I remember when I was studying graphic designing and coding our teachers taught us "Make it stupid." Basically, the simpler the site is, the better for the majority of the consumers. And as a consumer myself, holy shit, the amount of mental gymnastics I have to do to just find the product selection button on the freaking site! And then the search bar is nonexistent or malfunctioning or something like that (BeautyBay really grinds my gears, half of the time the whole site doesn't function properly). Good thing I left this field, I would've gone bonkers eventually.
love the new style!! also fully agree good design is SO important. one thing about me is i will probably join a cult if their website is appealing enough
honestly got "scammed" once because this one fashion website looked so good i thought it was trustworthy but it turned out to be those shein resellers with a 0 refund policy
Accessibility on the internet and in design is a big issue, I love when you make these types of vids. You should take about fonts (maybe with a accessibility focus?) my favorite font is Atkinson Hyperledgible for these reasons.
OOh i'd love to research more into this!
The G stands for Glamorous 80s hair
is this why people were telling me i looked like an anime mum
@@itsdivyag no comment
@@itsdivyag anime moms are baddies
if i get frustrated with a website layout i will simply exit out and never return again (love this kind of video btw)
omgggg that supreme site is sinful. i work in ux design and honestly the laws around accessibility need to be improved bc thats the only way companies are going to care and make real changes to their site experience 😭
Now you just have to redesign them. Please Divya. Share your talent with them, to help us. 😭🤚
Haha I actually did a Zara redesign for my module which is unfortunately already outdated a bit cause they've already updated their website since a few months ago
Please talk about the AWFUL interface for streaming services like Hulu, Amazon, HBO etc
I'm a UX designer and this was such a great video Divya! Inaccessible websites ARE straight up ableist, they are saying they don't want or need disabled people in their clothes. Even if their intention was just to be arty and original, UX design has come far enough that brands shouldn't be making these mistakes in 2022!
Wait, what?
Lmao
@@ElizabethUkeh It's true, I'm a front end developer and there is a way to code accessible websites that are easy for screen readers or keyboard navigation, but most companies/developers don't care about accessibility.
Not th fakedrowning in the pool😭😭😭 (Sharpay-esque) Zara said, ✨take a guess✨. I guess it makes your decision less bias because it really is just buying an item of clothing (more than buying it because how itlooks on the wearer)
Edit: and our sponsor is so cute
am here for ur professor era omg
Congratulations on getting sponsored✨
Thank you ☺️
I got my Masters in library and information science and have worked in web development for years, and I encounter so many websites that are ridiculously bad. It makes me want to scream every time I have to find information on a site where the home button goes to not the homepage of the site I was at and takes me to a parent company page or something
I worked in web development for a bit and it's wild how so many things that seem obvious and no brainers are bugs on so many sites!
This was a really really interesting analysis Divya!!
What I sort of collect from this whole thing is that the luxury brands don’t really care for people like us.
Like if you are a millionaire or even a person who would be a regular buyer then you most prolly won’t be doing this shit! You’d have your assistant do it, navigate through and all that, and especially supreme- they’re known to run out of stock in mere hours, so there are actual people who buy the clothing in mere minutes after the release and so supreme runs out; and when you think about this, these kinds of people almost earn from just this main thing of buying in bulk and so it’s natural for them to know how to navigate through the website!
They’re going through the hassle because when they resale they’re getting them extra penny that buyer can afford giving.
Also as you said, with supreme they’re kind off going with “we’re different” vibe, and well I believe all the luxury brands are doing that on different levels, but especially for extreme luxury and couture brands, they don’t give a fuck about their websites.
It’s almost as if they treat their websites like their UA-cam channel- not aimed at revenue, but at showcasing what all new you’ve gotten to the world. And this show-sha is mostly aimed towards the middle class who would surf through the sites and consume the content. They don’t need actual orders- even though they would certainly welcome any revenue- they want people to see them, and see them in a very specific and fabricated way. The rich people who will actually buy that stuff will always show up in their actual stores to surf through things in person instead of online buying.
Well that’s just my opinion and theory, but thanks Divya, you picked up a really really novel topic!
Yet another reason not to waste my money on expensive designer clothes. Thanks Divya!
I tried using the supreme website out of curiosity and the moving washi tape doesn’t stop easy so it triggered my dizziness on the spot. Its not the only website that loads stuff at a speed that causes physical eye and head pain.
Loved this vid, especially the emphasis on ableism in web design! I’d definitely suggest checking out blockbuster author websites-so many of them are absolute trash for no reason or have links to blogs not updated in 10 years
There were so many times when I just said fuck it and didn't buy anything because the website was getting on my nerves.
TIL Supreme is a clothing brand and not just a sticker manufacturer for people who want to vandalize street signs.
Net a porter is one of my favourite luxury fashion sites to browse. The design is functional & elegant and the product photos actually make me want to buy the stuff
yes holy shit
google is unusable btw. i looked up fashion sites are bad and it only gave me results that arent relevant to me. your video was the only one that actually was relevant
haven't seen the video yet, but i agree
i am flattered by this unwavering support
@@itsdivyag start a cult and make your coin anime mom queen
@@itsdivyag bestie, at one point in time i wanted to download an ancient europass cv format, and if i closed a page, i would get logged out and everything was invalid. there was no button to even download the damn form. that's why i took up web dev in my spare time, that was an abysmal website.
@@PYC334 omg that sounds like a nightmare
@@itsdivyag yeah 😫
very fun and interesting video. supreme's website is very much how i expected it to be
I feel like this video is you just showing off as to why these companies should hire you to rework their website designs and I’m here for it! 😄
I really enjoy watching you talk about design. It feels cheesy to say so, but its very fun and informative and that's awesome.
yaaay i'm glad you like it. want to expand more into just interesting design things
@@itsdivyag As a person who likes studying design in pretty much all areas at this point, I am EXCITED
The part about the model on the pool was a refference to High School Musical 2? Because it was very funny
Navigating these sites as an abled person looks absolutely monstrous I cannot imagine what it's like for disabled people
Right 😔 even the most popular brands have barriers
Shopping online at Zara is HORRIBLE!!! I want to see the clothes, not people doing yoga
Haha there's this instagram called @awkwardzara that just has every "weird" zara pose
@@itsdivyag THANK YOU!!! Now I have to follow them hahahah
For real, they design their websites likes it's one of those bizarre ugly outfits you see on the runway but no one ever told them the point of a website is to SELL their shit.
Zara is such a nightmare
I needed this upload today😩
This was a really fun video about an interesting topic. Thanks. And congratulations on 100k subscribers!
love listening to your thoughts on design 😌 I like your "conversational style" as you put it, makes the video fun!
I never knew so much though went into website layout and creation! Thank you for the knowledge, great video as usual :)
i guess money really can’t buy class (or ethically sourced labor and materials apparently 😒)
Love this new style of video! Design is so important, especially for websites!! You explain things in a really accessible way, which I appreciate as I’m someone who doesn’t know a lot abt design
I love u divya. You're a whole ass mood
Tbh you make every topic interesting and fun and I really love when you talk about graphic design in any form 🙏
I started watching your videos not so long ago and I really like your delivery haha
LOVED this video. lost it at the the narration of the High School Musical 2 plot especially
Loved this video! Honestly think you could literally talk about anything and it'd be interesting and enjoyable because it's how YOU approach it that makes the topics engaging. Looking forward to seeing you create more videos on design x
Congrats on 100k, G! ❤️
Love the new video style! Very informative and fun
That HSM2 reference is the best.
A good tool will GTF out of your way so you can FLEX. Good tools suppose to be “invisible”, “it just work”.
congrats on 100k!
No amount of artistic license and shit will stop my grumpy ass from complaining about websites with awful layouts. NO ONE GETS A PASS. I WANT MY FUCKING ACESSABILITY.
ugh immediate backspace on that type of website! love this video!
CONGRATS ON REACHING 100K DIVYA!!
Aaaaa thank you so much 😮💨
loved the video and looking forward to more of your design-based vids! personally for me, i like when things are easy to access and see. i'd rather they focus on creating fun interactive lookbooks - which actually contributes to me wanting to buy their clothes. i think of Asos' website design, it's fairly easy to use and hassle free. However, they need to fire their photographers and stylists cos their models are not marketing their garments well enough. the models are often shot so awkwardly. It's usually their video section of the models wearing it that genuinely sells their products to me! Something I think more websites can learn from. If they could combine the stylish lookbook nature of Zara, I believe they would be able to sell better. I have worked as a retail visual merchandiser and it genuinely is all about selling a fantasy to consumers - you want people to access your products easily (which is why sometimes familiarity is great while thinking of branding!) while still basking in this idea that they *need* that shit in their life. (this is also me pretending im pro-capitalist bc of my job haha)
I love the video part of asos clothes and I feel the same way! If there’s no video I’m like ehhh because you can’t actually see the product move and how it fits a form
this video was amazing!!!
love these videos
I remember learning about usability testing in college (20 years ago!), and I’ve still never worked at a company that actually does it. “QA says it works. Deploy it! Who cares that users can’t actually read the font?”
Omg i love this video about UX, really informative and funny lol. These fashion websites are so bad and need to become more accessible! But I rly like this UX/UI design video!
Loved this video so much!
Glad you liked it!!
Idk how I didn't notice you hitting 100k but congratulations
Thank you sm 😙
Accessibility can be so hit or miss in sites. The sites you showed are not great about that.
I'm glad that you used Wave to do accessibility testing as well; we actually used it to do some testing at my workplace.
100k !!! When did u hit that?? CONGRATS I've been watching a while, you keep doing you your vids are v fun :>
Hii thank you so much I’m so grateful
THANK YOU I was recently trying to shop on Zara, what the actual f is their website? 1px scrollbars, photos inaccurate as hell, it's just a nightmare
This video is so good I’m sharing it with like 5 friends to watch too
☺️☺️☺️
Ok I came back to this video because I was just looking for a white jacket to buy online, clicked on Zara's website, saw what the fuck was on my screen and exited immediately lmao
unrelated but i love your accent! something about it just makes my brain go :)
Haha thank u ☺️
I think its fine if web designers want to get artistic and avant garde or punk or whatever, but they should have a noticeable, usable button to take you to a readable, simplified, accessible version of the site.
I want fabulous,
that is my simple request. I need something inspiring to help me get along. I need a little fabulous, is that so wrong? - Divya, desperately searching the fashion websites for a single thing that makes sense
the sunglasses in the intro is such a look
you're making cp proud 😍😍😍
hahah my grade for this module says otherwise
Divya is so funny and pretty, but every other video she just casually illustrates that she's also been a master of some new devastatingly technical concept all along.
Gyal is out-talking neckbeard vlogs and techbros, snatching at their thrones with what provocation?
If I was poisoned with a rare chemical, bestie would pull out the beakers and bunson burners and synthesize the antidote before my eyes and save my life.
I trust Divya with everything. She deserves this world. Why have we yet to give it to her?
The theme song girl is 👌🏾Level up!
I think reformation is the only brand that i have come across that doesnt look boring but is also user friendly (sadly i cant afford it but i love looking at those dresses)
Wait was Divya explaining the first like 30minutes ov High school musical 2 Hahaha 4:25
100k🥳🥳
Looking at the Supreme website takes me back to high school in a way I don't like
Off topic but you really should drop your makeup tutorial because honestly >>>
4:15 -- the description says printed camisole top but you can barely see the top...
Damn this is giving me flashbacks
it's the entire premise of hsm2 for me 😎😎
Zara app is jut horrible to me and feels boring and formal and confusing.
May you please take more books to jail ? Or share a book like the time you shared “kissing the coronavirus?” Thank you
Did you just give the plot of HSM 2 LOL
how the water taste?

NOT THE ZARA MODELS
They put their whole body into those poses
@@itsdivyag they really put their whole modelussys into the poses (especially the bear)
