- One of George Balanchine's last, (1980) and most personal, masterpieces. He gave no story but there are hints galore. Dancers in order of appearance are: Suzanne Farrell and Jacques d"Amboise, Karin Von Aroldingen and Adam Luders, Heather Watts and Peter Martins, (Kay Mazzo originated this role) and Sara Leland and Ib Andersen. The pianist is Gordon Boelzner.

Hauntingly beautiful!!! 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛
Beyond gorgeous. I hope people appreciate the magnificent piano-playing that accompanies this great ballet.
There will never be another Suzanne 😢 she’s just pure magic
Suzanne's variation @23:25 is poignant, remote, enchanting and disquieting all at the same time. I just can't make up my mind. Brilliant choreography, briliant music and brilliant dancer.
Ib is amazing!!! Sara!!! Fantastic!!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Love Sara Leland!!! Her lyricism is ... beyond description!!!
In un'ambientazione fabulistica questo tenero balletto.enfatizzato come i protagonisti fossero presi da un dolce incantamento.Ottima dunque l'euritmia in toni sommersi
BRAVISSIMI. BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO
that second duet from Suzanne is so sublime. such interesting steps. just wow. and Karin. that fabulous actress she is. so moving at the end. tears 😞
Suzanne Farrell isn’t in this video. You mean Karin’s?
Huh? Yes she is. It’s the whole ballet on this video u posted.
RIP Jacques de Amboise. You were one of the very best!
This was my only appearance with the NYC Ballet. I danced the very small part of the critic.
We filmed it on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry!
The music, the beautiful setting, the delicacy of dancing, pure romance of days gone by...
No one could dance like these dancers today. Thank God it has been filmed.
Very beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
thank you John again for this treasure, just found it today. merry Christmas John, thank for this wonderful gift from you.
36:28 - look at how Suzanne starts the opening, with a perfect pirouette, and then her hand stretching every muscle to finish the movement. This is stunning. 38:33 - when the piano reaches the climax of a phrase and she almost violently throws her hand down, look at the position of her hand. It's the perfect Balanchine hand. 38:54 -- THIS is what I've been screaming about since I bought the VCR almost 30 years ago. The last part of that exit, when she goes "unconscious" for lack of a better word, lasted 10 seconds, as d'Amboise took her off slowly. Balanchine was right to choose him as her partner for this. ***It was one of the greatest moments of ballet I have ever seen in my life.*** You could hear everyone gasping. I saw every performance of her as the girl in blue. There were 26 of them, I think??? The film editor treats the exit as if it had two parts. It did NOT! It had 3 parts, and he cut off the third part of it, when Suzanne leaves the world, and showed 2 seconds of it! One of her greatest moments on the stage, and that ignorant POS film editor showed two seconds of it. I have been looking for that film editor for 30 years, and I'm still looking for him.
That's why she was what she was.
God save us from "creative" editing of dancers!!!
John, I repeat your comment to myself, and it makes me feel better. Thank you so much.
Exactly. If you want to be Ingmar Bergman, go to film school. If you have a job filming ballet -- the dancers are moving already -- you don't have to. And the choreographer will tell you when it ends, too!
Interesting comments, as I've only seen this version only on tape. I'm very curious to see that last few seconds of her exit that you mention. So many filmed segments of dance have been ruined by horrid & faulty angles & crappy editing!
Thank you so very much John! The sound and image quality are so good!!!
I think this is one of Mr B''s MOST beautiful and *underappreciated* works. It's just sublime & mysterious, beautiful. All the dancers - even Jacques, who was so much older here - look wonderful. In this work, Suzanne *does* look magnificent!
I cannot imagine the current NYCB being able to adequately cast this ballet right now. I got to see this cast.
so interesting to watch all these ballets that are referred to in the new bio about Balanchine. Mr B. a must read for balchine lovers
this ballet is so sublime - so happy to see this. thank you!
Wow what a treat to see this. I get so nostalgic!
This is such a beautiful ballet and I agree underappreciated. i haven't seen the whole ballet in ages. Thank you for this one John. It's magic.
Really a great ballet , as ever with Balanchine
Magnificent, mysterious, and very moving. Thank you so much for posting. This cast is so great. I recall seeing it with Kistler, Somogyi & Nichols, Hubbe, Soto ... They were excellent but these dancers are incomparable. Thank you again.
So much said in this work and said with dance and not with words. The scene with the dark angels left me bereft with helplessness to stop the inevitable. The last scene says it all, with deep feeling and understanding by von Aroldingen and Luders. Yes, a personal masterpiece.
It's such a small moment, but I get chills when 3 women enter at 25:04. Perhaps that's because I had the privilege to watch it from backstage.
I think all of us who were at the premiere had to be aware we were at the final phase of a great period in ballet. Couldn't go on much longer...
How great to see the complete piece! Thank you John!
heartbreakingly stunning
THANKS for posting, JC!!!!!!!
How tragic to see Schumann retreat from Clara, into madness and then death. It really did happen.
Oh, and thank you for posting this. After Elusive Muse came out, the VCR version was the only full version of it available. :-)
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Cast list please.love this ballet.
This is awesome. It was interesting to listen to the musical constraints in the piano performance due to the choreography. It imposed a firmer rhythmical approach in many passages while in a recital situation the music would allow for more fantasy. I'm just sorry the soundtrack is so terrible...
as is the resolution.. but those were the days.
Does NYCB even perform this anymore? So beautiful!
I really don’t know. I have nothing to do with the company these days.
@@jcliff26 Just finished your book. It was fabulous, and I really loved all your insights into Balanchine's personality and working methods.

... und wann kommt der Hasenpfotentanz ?
Beautiful! Thank you for posting this! However, am I the only one who much prefers watching a ballerina dance in pointe shoes lol? Seems such a waste otherwise!!! :)
Cerebral
She reminds me of taller Alina Cojocaru.
