  • To keep you vacuum running and sucking, it's best to clean out the
filters and canister. I show you how to do that. Also cutting the hair
and stuff that gets caught around the brush.

Thank you for the instructional video. I questioned using soap on the filters and found the owners guide had a "Important message: DO NOT use Soap when cleaning the filters. I have a newer model with Duo Clean PowerFins and Self Cleaning Brushroll, but otherwise the the canister and filter assembly is the same.

These companies still haven't made it easy for us with the Tangled hair/string's and everything else that's get cought up in the brush roll! I recently purchased a 2 in one small Vacuum which has the feature of a easy REMOVABLE of the BRUSH. Can't understand why these manufacturer are still stuck in a rut with this problem. I was just getting ready to purchase one watching your video before this one, now I'm kinda having second thoughts. Thank you for being so detailed and Informative.

This is a beast of a vacuum. I got the NV501 used for only $10 last year, and I'm just now replacing the filters to basically like new again!

    Your instructions worked perfect, thanks!
The only small improvise I did was since I had concentrated dog molecules to blast out of there, I used Mrs. Meyer's scented hand soap to suds up the filters, and their spray cleaner to wipe around inside where the filter sits. I took several passes to get that clean, so I sprayed it pretty heavily on a wash cloth, and finally, no dog smell.

I recently bought a different model of Shark Rotator vacuum (NV680 series). However, all of the same basic maintenance procedures apply to that model as well. You are definitely right about cleaning the canister and pre-motor filters. It is the real fine dust that eventually works its way through those filters and slowly damages the vacuum's motor. A vacuum that gets cleaned regularly is one that will last a lot longer and keep its performance than one that does not receive this type of regular maintenance.
I bought a second set of filters for my vacuum. It was dirt cheap on Amazon. I can rinse one set out and set the second set in my vacuum while the set I washed is drying. Thanks for the good video!

Thank you Greg! I have had my Shark Rotator vacuum for about a year now and this is the first time that I've needed to clean the filters. I LOVE the Shark. It replaced my Dyson that I had for over 10-years and either the power switch went or the motor burned out on it and I felt it was time for a new vacuum anyway. This Shark has been a better (and lighter!) vacuum for me. Who would have thought that something as simple as detachable canister and LED lights on the front would help make it a winner, but it did. I never could see what I was missing with the Dyson because it didn't have the headlamps. Anyway, I'm looking forward to many more years with the Shark.
One thing that I do recommend is wiping down the inside of the filter cylinder 'before' you lift out the bottom (flat) filter screen. This will catch any dirt that falls down while you wipe. (Yes, mine was pretty nasty.) Then, do a final wipe. Anyway, thanks again!

On the new versions (Lift Away) the access for the post-motor HEPA filter is on the bottom. Feeling underneath the bottom edge lip of the faceplate there's a release you push in, and then slide the face plate straight down. It's a large button, so it's even a lot easier than that tab. Reversing you just slide it back up with a click after checking or replacing the filter.
The upper filters are exactly the same though. In my experience cleaning them about once or twice a month is adequate. (At least for a small 2 story house.) Only grumble is the holder for the upper foam section doesn't seal snugly, the rubber lip doesn't seem to go out far enough. The second upper filter doesn't seem like enough if too much gets by the foam part.

Great video. Thanks. I never knew there was a filter at the bottom and front. You can open the bristle part with a coin or something similar in the three screws to make it easier to access. Also there is a groove along the length of the bristles to make it easier to cut stuff out.

Idk if it has been mentioned, but when you're cutting the hair out of the bottom, hit the "Lift Away" button and it will leave you just the bottom. Easier to clean with it upside down in your lap than laying the vaccum down.

    Hi Greg,
I use to use a scissor to cut the hair off the roller. I found a carpet cutter/razor that I found in my husband's tool box and it works great. Cuts right thru the hair and in a minute or 2 you have yourself a hair free roller. I put the tool back in my toolbox. lol. Give it a try.

Love the design of the Shark and the way everything snaps perfectly together. Space age technology. But cleaning it is a weak feature, and makes me long for my old Hoover and Eureka vacuums. Still, watching you go through the paces was consoling. I would only add wearing an old surgical mask (lots around now) when emptying the cannister, maybe even bringing the garbage can outside. LIttle clouds of dust. . . .!

This is the hard way... get a screwdriver and take the lower assembly apart... there are six screws that include two beneath the little roller wheels in the front of the vaccuum.... roller comes out -- you can pull all the hair out and clean the roller part with some cleaning mixture and a rag...

Yea big time. Had a hugeeeeee clog right in the middle. What works nicely is if you take the hose outside, put an air duster straw in the tube and cover that end with your hand, and just blow it out, that usually gets dust out. If you really want to clean it, pour a little dish soap down the tube and turn the hose on and let it spray thru the tube. Just make sure its dry before you use it

You can get a long brush they use to clean dryer lint traps. Take off the hose, run some warm water in the tub or take it outside and use the garden hose. Add some water and soap to the brush then into the hose and rotate it as you go, also collapsing it so it gets smaller, otherwise you'll have trouble removing the brush. Once it's scrubbed clean, rinse clean till you see clean water. To dry it, hang it over a chair so that both ends are facing downward. It may take a day or 2 to completely dry inside. Once it's dry reinstall it on to the vacuum. If you see a "port" it's a small round door that is next to where you connect the hose. Make sure that's clean as well. It's prone to get a buildup of dirt around the edges and can affect the suction if it doesn't close properly. Hope this helps!

I've used Lysol (liquid) baking soda & now Borax-fave (!) to clean the icky canister. Qtips are handy for the crevices. In so far as the foam filter, after washing it out 4 or 5 times w/ Dawn, I just ordered a 6 pack from Amazon. It's affordable and you don't need to worry about foam not fully drying and being a ripe habitat for mold.
I wish I had maybe used a hair dryer vs. out on lanai in sun, or in hotter than hot garage to dry, b/c now the filter (that's not removable) is a bit rusted. Any one else have this issue?

I wanted to know if you could wash the filter he pulled and showed and put right back in. I used to use air pressure but then my roommate took his compressor toy when he left. Do you have to replace it if you can't air it out? Seems like you have to wash every filter every time you vacuum and I don't even have pets! Ah, I used compressed air from a can, expensive but so is a new vacuum. Also had the corner get bogged up before where the hard plastic hose makes that sharp corner there's a little door for cleanout.

That's the hepa filter, it can be washed and because it's densely packed it takes 48 hrs to dry. That trap door gets gunked up and makes you lose suction if not seated properly. I use a letter opener to get into the crevices and gently scrap off the gunk then wipe clean with a clorax wipe.

I advise using William Heckman's instructions below and incorporating that into the video. I needed to know where those hidden screws were located under the small wheels so I could take the roller brush out and clean it more thoroughly.

How do you clean the screen filter inside the dust cup? fine dust gets trapped in there and running water in there doesn't help. That fine dust stays in there and if it gets wet and can't get it dry all the way then you get that musty, wet towel smell when you run the vacuum. It would make it so much easier if you could take it out.

Try using a wet soapy bottle brush. Then stick a towel up in it and around the inside so it can dry faster. That's what I do.

Can you hand wash the HEPA filter or does that ruin it?

    • @paris9474

It’s washable, by hand. I did just finally get a new filter, from Amazon for $6. I tossed the old one in the washer, it looked perfectly fine when I took it out. I let it air dry.

Can we clean the other filter that you took out and didn't wash? Mine is black but it looks like it's paper material

Yes. It is black from the motor. Use some soap to clean and rinse.

I use a garden hose outside and flush a lot of water through it.

How do you clean that screen filter inside the tank? Part of it never even gets wet and it does not come out

Turn it upside down and use a wet soapy bottle brush, rinse and let dry overnight.

Cleaning the HEPA with water is not recommended due to the water possibly damaging the fibers inside the filter. Probably better blowing it out with air outdoors. Wear a mask too lol

  • @branchian4712

It's best to clean and empty the canister outdoors while wearing a mask. Never empty this inside your trash can indoors because all the dust just goes back into the house and possibly into your lungs.
