He reckoned as he was ex army, had a .45 pistol and he would be right. He was visited by members of the 'PNP' and he was taken to a fast boat ride to Basilan, a 'guest' of the Abu Sayaff. After a period of time when a pile of ransom moneys called 'overnight board and lodgings' were not forthcoming he was dumped on a remote beach, much lighter in weight and ready to heed advice. He was extremely lucky.

Hi Garry, I hope that people heed your warning about visiting known dangerous areas in Mindanao. I'm about your age and have done a good bit of travelling around Asia, Europe and the USA using various modes of transport. Honestly I believe the whole world is generally not as safe as even 10 to 15 years ago. 10 years ago I would have had no hesitation about walking out in various Barangays in Cebu & Mactan, but this last 2 years I sensed a feeling of risk or danger. I am from UK and obviously know the areas to avoid or be cautious in the home country. Have had invites to Samar and Mindanao before but declined after reading warnings on government sites and blogs. Done a lot of trips to the States and not heeded warnings from my cousins living there, but I was lucky I suppose (and younger). Now age has crept up on me I ain't fit enough to retaliate so think more cautiously about where I step out. Am back home now in my old area and feel okay at night here, don't seem to get any stares here. Doesn't mean I am 100% safe but feels more relaxed. Anyway enjoy the rest of your stay out there and travel safe mate. Philippines does have some real nice areas

I dont think its our place to say whether a city is safe or not to visit. But everyone has their own risk tolerance. Was he naive? Maybe...100% agree with the fact that you will stand out if you live in such remote areas...the assumption that you have money is real, so....overall, I love phils like yourself. Keep a low profile, keep your wits about you and enjoy life in such a great country!

I’m in Davao yet again in a few weeks. Davao is ok. I’ve travelled around a lot of Mindanao, in the “risky” areas I tend not to spend any more than a week. That way before you’re noticed by too many of the “baddies” I’ve moved on. Living in those areas and being known is a risk I wouldn’t take.
Evening agree get in and out before your noticed ..Mr Eastman posted quite a bit in yt and fb about his life It pays to keep quite and keep low profile I've been these areas but I won't be going back for a whike

He stated on his channel, that he found his wife in the Philippines and said he is lending money to a businesses to profit and earn interest. Maybe that triggered his kidnapping. Earning interest is frowned upon in some Muslim communities. One does not need to pay a dead person back...

I'm about your age and have done a good bit of travelling around Asia, Europe and the USA using various modes of transport.
Honestly I believe the whole world is generally not as safe as even 10 to 15 years ago.
