    Bro! I just wanted to thank you for this video. My gf has that exact make/model and I was quoted 600-800 for this job. You explained it so well that I did it myself for $6 (cost of gasket). That was the largest mechanical job I’ve done on a car ever. I’m not that inclined. If I can do it, anyone can.

    Super helpful video, my filter housing wasn’t the issue.. my tensioner bolts snapped in the housing so I figured to just replace these gaskets and replace the whole thing and do a fresh oil change

    Your videos are the best UA-cam videos I have used to do DIY repairs on my car. Thank you for generously sharing your knowledge and experience, and the time and effort you put in making the videos.

    Great video, was a huge help in the replacement. I'd add that the "hint" of putting an allen wrench in the hole for the belt tensioner is really required to get out the bolt for the alternator. Videos on working on BMW's are so key giving the layers of disassembly required. Thanks again.

      Ed Calvin That’s a good tip on the tensioner. Thank you for watching!

    I found this video after 2 yrs of putting up with the oil leak. My wife made me move the car from under the carport due to there was always an oil spot that kept getting bigger.
    I had the same trouble getting the alternator rocked loose as others but it came out .the gasket came out in tiny pieces due to so brittle. Also there was only the outer washer on the bolt. The inner was made on to the housing unit. Thank for the vid.

      I thought the washer was fastened to it also, but if you move it a bit it comes off, for others who want to know. I would hate for someone to lose it thinking it just stays there. The oil holds it on there until you move it.

    You made this look so easy, why do the other people that make this video struggle so hard with this repair?

      How to Automotive How much approximately because I have to do this on my neighbors 2005 x3 and have no idea what to charge him I also did valve cover gaskets and front wishbone and trans mount it's a 2.5 so I don't know if it's different looks sort of similar though, the funny thing is he works for BMW as a supervisor to the service writers and can't afford the $160.00 an hour rate they charge.

    I followed the same procedure as You did, but My alternator seems to be stuck, any idea why? And is there another pin or something keeping it on the bracket? Thanks

    Great video!, I have this oil leak on my 2006 3.0i which has worsened in the last 6 months and will be doing the repair soon. Could this type of leak (loss of crankcase vacuum) also be causing my P0171/P0174 codes?

      For me it was the air flow intake boot. Look for videos on the DIY smoke pump test using a basic pump and cigar.

    One thing is, when I changed my spark plugs on my X3 I had to disconnect the negative battery which caused me to look all interior lighting, no wipers, no locks. How to safely disconnect the battery?

    Did you only remove 2 bolts of the alternator or was there a third?

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  7 років тому

      jordan F yes alternator only has two bolts. You'll probably have to pry it off its perch

      Also do I need to drain my oil before I do this job?

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  7 років тому +1

      jordan F it's not need it to drain the oil either. You could always do it as a precaution after the job is done

      Hey man thanks for the help I successfully changed my oil filter housing gasket with your help. One thing went wrong though. The lower electrical connector attached to the oil filter housing broke off the wire. Do you know what that connector does?

    The customer will be back for the alternator and wonder why it costs so much, you tried to tell them, I know how frustrating that is right now I'm doing the same job on my neighbors x3, I can't even convince him to let me change the belt, the ac isn't bad but the alternator belt is cracked and making noise, it's easier to do it now than later, I hope this fixes the oil leaks, I already did the valve cover gasket this vehicle is plagued with fluid leaks and it only has 129,000 on it, when i told my friend who worships German cars about it he asked me what year it is his response was that most people who buy BMWs only have them for two or three years, so in his mind at least they aren't made for the long haul, for a new one to only be good for a couple of years for that kind of money is ridiculous, my 2001 Buick lesabre has 252,000 on it and only last week the radiator started leaking but I assume it's original and aftermarket I found one for fifty two bucks on eBay, I can only imagine what one is for a BMW or Mercedes I mean a new GM one is 250 so these are probably a grand at least.

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  7 років тому

      Peter there is definitely a lot of people drive in these German cars that cannot afford them. Believe it or not radiators are not that expensive for them since they're all made out of plastic. Thank you for watching in writing!

      How to Automotive Case in point I'm working on my neighbors x3, he works for BMW as a supervisor to the service writers and he can't afford what they wanted to charge him to repair the oil leak plus other things I had to do to it, just curious if you want to say what you charge for this job, dealer rate is $160.00 an hour, I also had a neighbor whose niece foolishly bought an older used land rover, it was parked by my house for three months because she couldn't afford the repairs it needed, she ended up having it towed away for scrap, I think it needed like five grand worth of work.
