    Thanks for the video. I've done the VCG on other cars before, but this was the first time on my X3. A couple of comments. The job is surprisingly pretty simple for our X3 as it is my experience that nothing is simple on this car. The tube seals on mine were all stuck also and they came of easily with pliers, just like your video. However, before I grabbed the circular seals out, I carefully snapped off the flat pieces that run in between the circular seals. I did this so the flat pieces would not break off into the engine when I yanked out the stuck circular seals. I used a Elring seal and Elring bolt seals from eeuroparts. The kit was around $30. The Elring seal fit great and did not fall off when reinstalling. I used some RTV per the video and Then apply a small amount of RTV to the seams at the VANOS actuator and cylinder head. As for torquing, I found elsewhere that the bolts bottom out, so I carefully and slowly tightened all over per the video until I hit bottom. Once you hit bottom, you've got it tight enough. Great Video!

    My X3 developed a rough idle and when I checked my spark plugs there was oil in two of them, is it a bad valley gasket ?

    On the whole a great instructional video. Only thing I have issue with is not using a torque wrench for retightening the valve cover. Could I do it yes, but I've been working on cars for 40 years. New DIY guys should use torque measuring devises until they have a feel for such things but even at that, if you've got it use it!
    Still want to say good job though and thanks for the video Brian!

      Todd Clark sometimes I forget that us vets have a built-in torque wrench in our hands. Thank you for the tip I'll keep adding those to the future videos.

      Todd Clark hi how are you! Excúseme can you tell me how many pounds I can use in my torque wrench when I use on my BMW X3, thanks for help me, and thanks Bryan for the exceptional video.

      If it’s a plastic valve cover be very careful not to crack it. Also inspect it carefully for cracks.

      Love my torque wrench and use it often as I can. You do get a feel for things like the poster says but now I have a little more time I feel that achieving even torque, especially on a plastic cover like this is important.

    Hi great video of the bmw X3,
    I got me a 2006 bmw x3 and in one winter cold morning I started up the engine and let run for like 5 minutes so I could get some heat when ready to leave.
    So, when I came out to my car it was smoking white smoke like crazy, inside the cabin full of white smoke too.
    The engine never overheated, not even when it was smoking, when I turrned off the engine I noticed some fluid like antifreeze and bit oil in the tail pipe
    That is mean it has a head gasket blown or a valve cover blown out?, not sure what to do now.
    Where do you get your gaskets from?.
    Thanks,

    Great video and thorough explanation of this service. I had to get this done on my X3 and your video helped me understand the scope of the work. Thank you!! By the way, what is the ballpark price for this service?

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  5 років тому

      James Wilson if I remember right it’s about $250 labor and about $75-$100 for parts.

    • @unoste26
      @unoste26 4 роки тому

      They just quoted me $350 for labor. Miami, FL, Oct 2020. Did this once about 8 years ago, gotta do it again. The kit I was looking to buy has a shaft sensor and a shaft actuator seals, I was wondering where those go in this car.

    • @mr2_mike
      @mr2_mike 2 роки тому

      @@unoste26 You have a newer motor. There was a change that isn't widely advertised.
      It's an actuator that is taken off when doing the cover.
      Look at some other videos and you'll see them take an actuator off.

    Thank you for this great video and all the details.
    Bentley manual and ECS Tuning recommend 10 Nm (89 in-lbs.) for the valve cover nuts.
    Is it really OK to wash the cover? I was concerned that traces of water/soap may get into the oil? I am doing an oil change soon anyway.

    Hi, My bmw E83 crankcase vent valve went bad with pressure in engine & blow out my valve cover gasket. Do you think it could have damage any other seals?

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  7 років тому

      Gilles Brassard The Valve cover was about an hour and a half. I would have to look up the labor on the head gasket.

    • @gillesbrassard355

      I though it was the same valve cover and head gasket...

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  7 років тому

      Gilles Brassard The Valve cover on this car is about five hours labor I was wrong. The cylinder head gasket is 18 hours in labor.
