- I needed to spend as little as possible, to buy a sensible, comfortable reliable and economical car to run up big miles with plenty of smiles.
So what did I get?
a 145,000 mile old 2.7 diesel XJ Limousine!
Well, I like a project. And I like an adventure. Pretty much sure I've nailed it here😁.
The car (now known as 'Blu)' Looks smart and drives beautifully. But in this episode, join me on my inspection as I list out all of the problems i already know about.
The bongs were quite loud.
agreed . Apologies
You did well there John. Great buy. Nigel Thorley ( JEC ) ran his V8 350 to 250k miles before it was written off in an accident. He is still running another one now (358 ) which is a diesel
Thanks Steve
I genuinely have no fear of the diesel. Ive owned 2 3.0 litre lion engined cars, and neither has ever skipped a beat. Like the 4.0 V8's they have enough enthusiasts for us to know all their likely failure modes. (Nikasil Water pump Tensioners Valley pipe etc) Knowing where their weakest points are doesn't make them bad engines. The next new engine that any manufacturer produces will have no reputation for issues until it has some miles, years and enthusiasts to tell the tales of woe. And the Monocoque for the x350 is a technical tourdeforce. with few equals even today.
driving past the other night purdey looked a little dejected so i asked what was wrong she said OH hes only gone and got a younger model with "double G " and longer legs AND its sitting on MY lift in MY garage so the next time hes in a rush to get to the chip shop i might develop a flat battery but ive got something she hasnt under my bonnett a FOUR LITRE always say SIZE MATTERS .
She knows I love her most. And just wait until I give her her new watch😉
Really useful video, having just bought a 2008 X358 3.0 V6 with a very low mileage. The only problem common to my car was the inner driver's door seal, though mine was at the bottom, plumb in the middle - perhaps where it may be caught by a foot on getting into the car.
Thanks for sharing👍
Hi John the the fuel tank straps, replace asap !!! One went on mine and I had to drive about 30 kms to get home, withe tank dragging on the road eeeek !. Stainless replacements were purchased from EBay for about £45 for a pair.
Thanks for the tip off David👍
we have absolutely similar taste in cars for sure. I have both an XK8 convertible and an X Type 3.0, both black with tan/oatmeal interiors.
I was close to buying an Xtype estate twice. Both times the car was not as nice in person as the pictures or the phone call had suggested.
My wife said I mustn't tell you the bongs annoyed her and she was in the other room.
Please let mrs Jagvette1 know how sorry I am and that I will use a softer bong in future😉
@@ToTheGarage We all know the type of Bong you will use :)
@@ToTheGarage silly ass I said she said I musn't tell you, I know its your second language but come un yea boy up nurth
You surprised me John! I fully expected an X308 to be your next project car, after all it's really just a four door XK which you know inside and out. Easy peasey :-) The X350s were pretty decent overall, but in my opinion they lost the traditional Jaguar ride and handling with that troublesome air suspension...again, just my 2 cents. Congrats on the buy and best of luck with BLU...cheers!
x308. (prettier and i know the so wel) was top of my list, but the challenge of buying a sub £3000 car with no welding or body corrosion issues kept me looking rather than buying untill Blu came along.. plus the fuel cost benefits, and here we are😁👍
Hi John...nice Car . The blu one. Little faults, what else. You are the best jag screwer in the windy Village. 😹
You got that right!😁
Wow, what a bargain. With fsh that car could easily have cost twice what you paid and still not be in significantly better condition. Nice find John.
Thanks Gerard.
I will be letting my friendly independant do a cam belt change on it (would take me too long because I would clean and check everything as I went) As despite being told it had whatever needed doing done. I have no evidence of the change at 105,000. after that i will do everything it needs myself. Should be a great adventure.
Get the oil pump changed at the same time unless it’s the newer type with bracing.
How much was it?
@@AndyK.1 £3000
Please put a link in the description to where I can get one of those gongs. Cleared the lounge and bagged me the TV to myself for the evening. Brilliant 😀
Your 308 and My 358 parked next to each other would make for an interesting compare and contrast video Gareth.
Black Bomber v Big Blu.
The height difference alone would I think be quite an eyebrow-raiser.
Gong for Christmas then!
@@ToTheGarage sounds good to me. The underpinnings of the 358 are clearly far more modern than the 308, where evolution from previous XJ’s over decades is evident. The buying, running cost comparison would be interesting too.
From Fraser Mitchell, husband of Leslie
I used to replace my wheel centre caps every year ! You could get them quite cheap on the internet, but winter always used to be very severe on them. Maybe Jaguar OEM are better, but they are eye-wateringly expensive. I owned two X350s, from 2010-2016 and 2016-2019, the latter an X358 Sovereign that was a lot better than the first car.
Might fit some early xk8 ones. Much more durable
You have a really good car for a daily and aside from the leak and number plate bulbs nobody would bother doing anything to it.
Thanks. I think im going to enjoy it
I'm pickling onions tonight John but looking forward to this
Serious question Tony
How long do you leave your freshly pickled onions before you consider them ready for sampling?
I think i might want to try my hand at it? Have i left it too late for Christmas?
@@ToTheGarage I am doing mine in preparation for Christmas so you are not too late. This lot has gone into cold pickling vinegar so will be at least a month - maybe longer. Depends on the size of the onions and these are a reasonable size. They last a while though.
i think the first problem you will have is fitting it onto your lifter .looking forward to your video on "BLU"
You are not wrong.
CD players cartridge sometimes jams.
With a flat screwdriver down the side of the cartridge, just give it a gentle wriggle on both sides and it should just align and pop out, until it happens again in a year or two.
Its definitely the bottom drawer/tray has stuck half in half out
Hi John,
Found your vid about faults on your newly aquired x358 interesting.
Could I ask which model of car Ramp /lift you have ?
I'm intending to buy an x358 and wanted to be able to do some maintenance.
Many thanks
Steve
Hi Steve
its a Strongman 'Clifton' 3 tonne mobile scissor lift.
Three letters: DPF = limp mode but I'm looking forward to the forthcoming vids as you get it sorted
Like the suggestion of naming the new boy Steed
Hi John . Great video. Do you know if all of the diesels of these had the dpf or was it just after a certain year?
What Price Range does a Lift Like your Start at. A Lift is a Game Changer. I could do so much more my self with one. Or at Least if I had a Lift or Access to a Lift I would seriously consider attempting a lot more of my own repairs.
Mine cost £1,700
Great car. Must have been a fat heavy previous owner to have broken the plastic on the drivers seat. Will you Hammerite the metal subframe parts?
I think they annoyed everyone but it added to the drama and tension of the cursory inspection
Oxidation for aluminum
Posh rust😁
CD player is likely to be a snapped or loose belt but only if u can hear the motor
Didn’t think they had belts. I’ve had to grease the cogs before though.
No Noises. just flashing lights. I think the Casette (if thats the right word) is jammed
I've been looking at these and the diesel would be more justifiable for the mileage I do. 15k a year. But heard a few reports of the diesel spinning bearings resulting in engine failure. Is this true?
She looks nice.
Thank you
I'm thinking about buying one of these... Would you recommend them as a whole?? Or is it a money pit?
I'm mostly scared of suspension issues and dpf
Hi. Im enjoying my ownership. DPF is not really an issue as long as you drive 30 minutes or more on quick roads regularly (which I do) Air Suspension can throw faults and in one of my videos you can watch how I replaced the piston ring in the air compressor ( the most common Air suspension fault) Its not expensive to do it yourself but in fairness as its a wear item it will need doing on most air suspended cars as they reach 150,000 miles or so. A well serviced example wil be no more of. a money pit. than any other 15 year old luxury. car. They are very well built and at least conventional corrosion is nothing to worry about on these aluminium mile munchers.
Question.. best way to clean blocked up pdf filter ? Mine is very smelly
Your pdf filter is what stops you loading pictures on your computer🤣. Your DPF filter needs an hour on the motorway!👍
Bong 11 the seal will still be exposed won't it ?, don't be a cheapskate buy a new seal, to spite the problems still a nice car but diesel not my choice.
yes mate. dependent on availability i may rotate the seal for now, but it will be replaced👍
PLEASE LOSE THE BELL NOISE, NOT AT ALL NECESSARY AND QUITE OFF PUTTING.
Agreed.😔. no more bongs
@@ToTheGarage 🙂
20 quid from jag will get you the 3d jag insert john ,a more classy finish to your alloys.
do you mean the version used on Purdy?🤔 (chrome growler on a painted background under thick resin with a chrome lip?)
@@ToTheGarage yes , same on mine
@@ToTheGarage mines on a green background that matches boot badge 👌
Can you lift an air suspension car without precautions?
Jags certainly. The downward travel is limited by the small top wishbone. I can't vouch for the hybrid exotic systems on some Citroens (oleomatic i believe). And i would be quite careful about lifting a car with aftermarket conversion to air bags.
Ah ok
I know you can not lift Bentley’s without selecting a safe mode , I think some Range Rovers are the same
Enjoy your exotica 😀
Actually it depends. If I lift all four wheels on mine with ignition on then when you put it put it drops right down to the bump stops on all for and will not come back up until it's actually driven. This can make it tricky to get off of the jack.
Let's be honest John if there was nothing wrong you'd be bored .
your right.
all these things just mean I will get more play value out of my new toy😁👍
That gong is going to get annoying.
It may be its only outing🤔
They are not cheap on the continent. Prices are x2 compared to ones in UK. And rising.
Not bad overall
Thanks Tony
im sure i will have a few headaches but she looks good rides beautifully and its novel to be playing with somethig very familiar and yet ive never worked on one before.
It will be interesting to compare mine with yours over time
What really annoys me is that you'll be paying high rate road tax on a car that uses the road less than a diesel car of the same age paying just £30 a year. Now that it has been proven that diesels are less clean and don't deserve the discount, the government should reduce the tax on cars like this especially as diesel owners are now being given payments because their cars aren't as clean as they were led to believe ... as if that matters, they've been riding on the backs of petrol owners for years and now want compensating for paying less. Makes my blood boil.
I think the diesel road tax will be a lot more than his old XK. Its all because of the age of the cars involved
Im paying plenty. £330/year
Jesus christ almighty will ressurect from the dead by that loud gong, he's not expected for another couple of thousand years. How unfortunate
😔sorry
Turned the sound off.....cant stand the bongs.....just looked at the images and sussed it out my self....
Seems nobody liked the bongs😢
Never mind.
Bye Bye bong gong
I'm going to use this video as evidence as to why the 308 is superior
Prettier, Yes, Cheaper Yes, Simpler to repair, Yes.
A straight forward Choice then.
Unless you do 30,000 miles a year and are paying for your own fuel at UK prices. and want to spend circa £3000 and not have welding to do.
Don't get me wrong, you can buy really nice X308's at a good price. (My friend Gareth has recently done so) but they are not common when you are on a budget.
That bell is annoying.
Its now been banned from my future video's by popular request Victor
I cant stand those think tires and wide wheels. The tires are more expensive etc. And they can't absorb pot holes.
Certainly wouldn't call the ride crashy. but I agree. that the ultimate in comfort will be achieved with higher profiles on smaller wheels
Budget tyres 👎👎👎👎
