My mom talked about Vinegar Pie. I will have to try this recipe.
If you mix your flour and cornstarch "with" your sugar, you'll not ever have to worry about clumping.
Looks good! I noticed that you used a different method to combine the ingredients than what was suggested on the original recipe in the newspaper. Whatever works for you is good! I’m not keen on meringue so I like that you baked the pie and omitted the meringue.
My family lives in WV and my mamaw made old fashioned vinegar pies and as a kid (it sounded yucky) I wouldn't try it & the grown-ups would say 'its your loss just more for us'. Now that I'm older I'm soo open to trying it. LOL
Transplanted early in life but I call it Mock Lemon Pie when I make it where I live now
You dont use the whites as a meringue? Ive never had vinegar pie without meringue.

can i make without the egg yolks since the flour and cornstarch should thicken the custard?

Is this pie also called "chess pie"? Had chess pie in Tenn. and it was wonderful, is this the same idea?
Chess pie I know usually includes white and yolk separately and incorporates sour cream, nuts and raisins. It is good... But this recipe seems more a straight (lemon) custard.

Craig Clayborne and James Beard both have decent recipes for Chess pie. See if your library has their cookbooks circa 60's/70's.
Can I use white vinegar?
I noticed that in the video they do say that you can use any type of vinegar.
Yes. It's typically what my mom used, although, back in the day, it was obviously apple cider vinegar.
Not a direct answer but there's a video of Mike Costello with Marion Ohlinger who says that way back in time it was fruit vinegar cooked down to a syrup to replace the sugar, not citrus out of season like a lot of people think. Pretty interesting tidbit. I made posset with acv and nutmeg; definitely tastes bright and almost fruit-like

Try adding the liquid to the dry stirring constantly. I’ve found it helps decrease lumps.
