This was build idea to have a bed in that was a good size while keeping it out of the way when not in use. I think the concept worked out pretty well, I had a lot of people ask about a little more in depth video about How It Works, so here it is. Any more questions just leave them below.

ABOUT ME I grew up in a cabinet shop and was born to be a woodworker. In the past few years when work slowed in the custom cabinet industry, I converted a few friend's Vans and SUV's so they had more storage for adventuring, work, or just the weekend beach getaway. Before I knew it I had my own business making people's ideas come to life. I design and build all kinds of custom woodwork and vehicles here at my shop in Huntington Beach, California! It’s really interesting...! I have to admit I’m not convinced I would be able to replicate the design if I wanted to. You do great work and have skills.

the idea is really REALLY clever, creative and original, but i would have put a narrow wood support ledge at the right height on the other side counters to support your clothes draws when they are fully extended out. the counter top that flips up would just lay ontop of them, giving you a platform for the mattress. no flip up counter, the sleeping platform has 4 (two doubled for 6) supports widthwise and both ways lengthwise. you already have everything there to do it. i think it would be sturdier, cleaner and simpler.
other than that, i really like the layout. so much excellent counter space!

A word of caution: Heavy duty slides are rated for capacity but the load is critically dependent on how far apart the slides are mounted. Having researched numerous slides myself I can tell u that the load is reduced considerably when mounted any more than 40 to 60 inches apart. So at a guess (because I have no idea what your slides are rated at or what the recommended width rating is) I would say your slides are now at half load capacity at best. I would be very mindful of this and in the very least, never share this bed with someone else.
EDIT: I would suggest thinking about some form of additional bracing or support.

Love the concept and craftsmanship. I have something similar, except my bed is hinged and folds onto the cabinet across my Sprinter, giving me that King Size. It's supported by my bench, cabinet and bench stool (made to fit across the center)

Nice design, do the locking tabs on the slides stay unlocked or unlocked based on where you set them? Can you unlock one side, then go unlock the other without the first one relocking?

  • @alcontrastdotcom
    @alcontrastdotcom 6 років тому +5

Great idea although I would still be tempted to add some small fold down legs at the corners. The drawer sliders may totally be strong enough and legs may not be needed but that load rating is for a fairly static load such as a 170 pound mannequin that doesn't move. With a 170# static load the drawer can be left extended or slid back and forth with no risk of failure. A 170 pound person moves around a lot and can momentarily apply dynamic forces which could substantially exceed the load rating of the sliders. Especially if climbing onto or off of the bed in the hallway area with the bed fully extended since most of those forces would be applied to one slider rather than being distributed evenly across the two sliders.

You could probably cut up an ambulance gurney At least in America they fold all the way down And when they come out the ambulance the legs pop up And support The Gurney That design is awesome to just suggestion I know you do it for a living and might make it more Lucrative for you not to pay for all that fabrication

Vw makes a van. Wall that slides out. They make a platform. That nolts to bed of van . if you are three season camping in national forest then roll out whole unit and a single tent to get out of heat and bugs. Your next option is hammock with bug screen. Costco makes 3 season down for $20 ea

Do you ever get any American made minivans to do? I would love to see what you can do with a Sienna, or a Dodge Caravan or something similar. I've been thinking of converting one of those, but can't decide on a configuration which will seem spacious yet have storage. I only need a single bed tho', so that's a plus. Sure would love to see you do one!

Admire your imaginative solution ideal for your priority needs of your boarding life style. Personally I dont need that dominant amount of valuable space taken up with that type of storage. so having different lifestyle needs, ld obviously do it very differently. But that v.versatility is the v.beauty of a self build van conversion!! :)

Hmm... maybe you overworked this solution? I think a simple wood frame couch/bed is pretty straightforward actually. It's probably best to have a breathable base or air space beneath the matress too, eg wood or slats. But some good ideas, I'll keep watching. At least you're original! London

I notice you didn't show how you get in and out of the bed.
Probably because you CAN'T without breaking the drawer system.
The runners might be OK for a 125kg load but not for you to sit on the front corner when you get in.
Don't put anything sharp under it, you want a soft landing.

Why does everyone put their beds (and therefore their heads) on the road side of the van, right where when some drunk smashes into you they can smash your head and body and kill you? Doesnt anyone think it is a smarter idea to sleep curb side where if someone sideswipes you all that happens is some metal gets deformed, and not your brain pan?
