    Very nice collection of HW :) Love it

      I was wondering about W95 too. But with Win NT you getting more problems with drivers for all video/tv/edit/grab cards so that is possible reason for W95.
      Still last thing you want to do with this computer ... is complete reinstall :-D

    That's an interesting collection of components. Judging by the dates on the cards and chips, I'd say a clever person liberated the ASUS CPU card and baseboard out of a decommisioned industrial 3U rack-mount server in circa 1999 and built himself a machine out of leftovers that would have been the equal of a 450 mhz PII or PIII for a fraction of the cost. Someone clearly loved this machine.

      It's therapeutic when not in a video. You should try sitting in front of an old system with MFM drives, they sound amazing and are hypnotic almost to listen to them spin up and spin down. It really depends on the build. I get what you are saying but it''s not bad in person. NOW a server!? Take a Xanax first.

    Even if you got one of these in 1995 it would start to really struggle for gaming by 2000 and wouldnt start anything by 2001. Though that was insane longevity for back then. System requirements jumped massively when the ps2/xbox released that both pentium mmxs and most pentium 2s went obselete in the same year. despite the pentium 2 having much more performance, not that far ahead of the pro. These days people complain if their much cheaper rigs with 7 year old gpus dont run a game at 60 fps lol.

      @@RETROHardware Interesting.... That computer could do windows 2000 and probably game with it just fine with glide titles, though 128mb ram would be more ideal in that case. Windows NT would be great to build a kind of retro workstation. I wish I could have gotten that motherboard when I had the chance some time back, but i didn't quite have the money. I love having a computer which is maxed out and has a very impressive look to its build.
      The best one I have right now is an industrial 386dx/33 industrial SBC on passive ISA backplane. The cpu card has no IO other than ps2 keyboard, which means it needs more isa cards!
      And I have a bunch of full lengnth ISA cards like a DPT caching SCSI raid card, Tsung labs based TIGA card, 2 card frame grabber, Mpeg decoder, awe 32 ct3990 with wave blaster.. IF its full length, with daughter cards, I stuff it in there.
      Also has a couple of full hight micropolis scsi drives.. Its an awesome build... Love those kinds of machines.

    I do not understand the fetish that certain people have in using the pentium pro for retro gaming pcs. not only more expensive, it is slower in windows 95 or windows 98. none game at the time even take knowledge the existence of the second CPU.

    • @mikv8
      @mikv8 5 років тому +3

      Pentium Pro is a legend. It's an icon. It's milestone. So far ahead of it's time. The time that 200 MHz 512K Pentium Pro came out in late 1995, the fastest regular Pentium was 133. The 166 wasn't until 1996. The Pentium MMX came out in 1997 was still way slower than the Pro. The Pentium II was slower as well on a per-clock basis. If you run a PII-Xeon from 1998 the same 200MHz clock as the Pro, sometimes the Pro is still taking the lead on the Xeon which was meant to replace it!
      The common misconception is it's slower in 16-bit than the regular Pentium is not true, Some think the lack of MMX hurts it's performance or compatibility. Not true again. MMX is a marketing bullshit, Very very few apps could use MMX.
      All in all, the Pentium Pro is just one of the most cool and sought after processors to have in a retro gaming rig. Just like the Slot 2 Xeons.
