My mom from Coalisland, County Tyrone, N. Ireland made this every year around this time of year along with Corned Beef Brisket. I haven't had it for so long now and miss her so much. There's really no reason to sift, this is a really rustic bread, the less you work it the better. Remember that during the potato famine, this was many a poor man's working fuel cooked in a peat hearth. Make two loaves , one with a handful of raisins and a tbsp or so of caraway seeds (luxuries) and another without as there's just nothing like it and they go quick (my mom always made two loaves). Thanks for this!
Well I just made this recipe this morning & the only thing missing was the Carroway seeds I went to 3 different stores & they did not have it also did not find a reasonably priced wire basket strainer. All other items I had & I did add some cinnamon. It came out perfectly I just finish my second slice yummy Saturday I going to make another one with my Corn Beef & Cabbage the wife out getting a bottle of Gunngas I got 2 small corn beef so nice thing is left overs good add 2 movies to day Quiet Man & Darby O'Gill and little people and relax :)
Hi Catherine! My mother-in-law name is Catherine as well. Your video came across my feed and I just started watching and really enjoyed it. I also like your humbleness in the way you talk and the simpleness of the way you cook food. I just watched your video of how you made and froze the breakfast food and loved it. I am definitely a new subscriber. Thank you for making food that we can make for our family!❤️🙏
❤🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤ Absolutely scrumptious, just as you said Catherine !!! Thank you so much for all your help and support in my kitchen !!! God bless you Catherine !!!❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
I am definitely going to try this recipe. I was born on St. Patrick's Day! I will be 57 this year and am ashamed to say I have never made soda bread. I always buy it. My Grandmother made it when I was younger!😂😂
This bread is absolutely delicious 😋 not as hard as I thought it would be.thank you so much for sharing this recipe.i love homemade breads.have a great day everybody 😘😘😊
Hi Catherine!!! Your recipe for this bread looks absolutely delicious...I will have to give your recipe a try for sure. YUMS!!! I think I can make this...Great Video!!!...🦋
I bet she didn't put an egg in it though. I was very surprised as an Irish Mammy, born and bred and living in Ireland my whole life and making soda bread since I was a kid with my mother (it was her grandmother's recipe) to see an egg in there! I think it would be delicious and very rich and "cakey" compared to Irish soda bread but I did have to double-check the name of the video when I saw her crack an egg in there lol
I made this today and it is very good. I used King Arthur bread flour because that is what I had. The dough ball was just about holding together when I put it in the pan, much less than yours, but it baked together nicely. The next time I make it I might reduce the sugar to 1/2 or 3/4 cup. it is a little on the sweet side with a full cup of sugar.
Hi Catherine. I made this soda bread today. But honestly I really thought that somehow I ruined it because my dough was way to wet. I think it may have been me not measuring the butter milk properly. (I had to make my own) It was a horrible sticky mess and I used all of the AP flour. I only had bread flour here so I had to use that to dry it out. And even doing that it was still to wet. Well, somehow I managed to get it into a roundish shape (sort of) and in the oven it went. I left it in the oven for one hour and it looked pretty good. And to my surprise it tastes pretty good too. I'll make it again but the next time I will be more mindful of the exact ingredients. After I felt that I totally messed this recipe up I was thinking......darn, I wish Catherine lived next door. haha silly me. PS....I think this bread will make a delicious breakfast as well.
@@CatherinesPlates You know it occurred to me that living in Florida and today the humidity was high. Maybe that could be the reason for my very sticky dough.
It's tradition to make a cross on the bread before you bake it because it not only helps it bake but it blesses the bread too
Oh what a wonderful idea, thank you.
Wow. It looks scrumptious . I’m going to use some craisons that I need to use . Thanks so much Catherine 🥰
@@meshiamae it also helps with cutting the bread
Yes, you have to make the cross in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost and to let the fairies out.
