    I grow up calling the knife “a case knife.” When I got married my husband called the knife “a butter knife.” That stuck so we call the knife “a butter knife” in our house. The bread looks delicious. I love the crunchy outside. I am going to try the bread recipe. I will put a cross and think of The Lord and how he gave his life for me. He is coming back real soon!

    My mom and grandparents were all born in Ireland, and I make Irish soda bread regularly. It’s so good, so simple, and fast to throw together.

      @@RunninUpThatHillh If you're planning ahead, leave out the amount of sweet milk you need over night and it'll wake up to be useful.

    As an O'Malley I have had my share of soda bread. Always with rasins. This year I'm adding Caraway seeds too! That is very traditional. Ill post my results. The cross on top stands for the sign of the cross and then a traditional Irish baker would poke 4 holes between the cross to let the fairies out too! How fun a little Catholic and a little magic. ❤ 🤍 💙 🧡 🧚‍♀️☘🍀💒

    My recipe, given to me from an old Irish mom with 11 kids, always includes caraway seeds and raisins. It delightful and perfect toasted with butter.

    Hey Tipper, My husband wanted me to write and tell you something. I had to wait till I got straightened up after watching Corrie & Austin's wedding video. Whewwww, tear jerker for sure, lol. I'm so happy for them. Good grief you would have thought it was one of my kids getting married, lol. Ok, anyway, I made your biscuits with self-rising flour and heavy cream. I've tried every biscuit recipe you could imagine and they mostly came out heavy and on the dry side. BUT......I made yours this morning, and he said that they were the BEST biscuits that he had ever eaten! They were awful good, nice and light and moist. I'll never make them any other way (might try buttermilk one day). I'm 62 years old and it took me this long to make a good biscuit, lol. Thanks again!

    Love Irish soda bread. I usually bake a sweet version of this for breakfast and snacks. The recipe is almost identical except I add a 1/3 cup of sugar and about 1 cup of dried fruit (raisin, golden raisins, or blueberries). So good. It's like a large scone.

    Love this recipe, I do think I will try it, we love any kind of bread. My aunt who is 84 a couple weeks back we were in her kitchen she was making homemade pimento cheese & she asked me to get her a case knife out of the drawer & I looked for several minutes for like a pocket case knife (wondering why she would want one) I told her I don’t see one, she said there is a bunch in there & I said I must not know what a case knife is 🙂 she showed me & I was like oh that’s a butter knife.🙂 I had never heard it called that. Never to old to learn.

    My family has always made Irish soda biscuits but never the loaf. My grandmother made them 3x a day for each meal. I have never found a recipe or family that makes this specific type of biscuit and neither has anyone else in our family. It is truly a family recipe that has been handed down generationally by watching our mothers and grandmothers make them. They have the basic ingredients of this Irish Soda Bread and all the Irish breads I have researched but not exactly. There is no egg or butter or lard in it. You don’t roll them out or cut them out. And they are baked in a hot cast iron skillet with hot grease and fitted tightly together. They are wonderful and it seems through the generations that people who have married into the family fall in love with them. I wish I could locate their origin. Thank you for your videos it is so fun to see how many traditions you grew up with that I also grew up with.

    I was born in 1960 and spent my first 58 years on Long Island. I moved to the very Northwest corner of NC in Ashe County to my farm full time in 2018. I've never been so happy to put NY in my review mirror for the last time. When we would make Irish Soda Bread we would also add raisins and if you like caraway seeds, we would add that as well. I love caraway seeds. My heart ached for the mountains and when we found this place in 2011 I hit my knees and wept. I got saved in 2018 as well and I see God everywhere I look here. This area, funny enough, is VERY similar to the way Long Island was when I grew up. We all waved as we drove by each other, we did massive gardens and put up lots of food. The phrases and words were similar. I always remember my grandfather saying it was "prit near" dinner time and he was "fixin to" do something. Call me strange, but I feel at home here. Tipper, if I never leave the borders of Ashe County again, I will die happy. My husband and I adore your channel, and the girls channel too. Thank you for making me love these mountains all the more by learning their history.

    Another great video Mrs Pressley!! Thanks! We love watching your cooking and stories of Appalachia!! My wife and I are Michiganders since our ancesters came to America. We watch another podcast from Appalachia and I have come to realize the Appalachian regions people of yesteryear REALLY know how to make the best of basic materials, surely, all our ancesters did, prehaps it was just transportation and trains were not as common as up North. Your work is definately interesting and very much appreciated.

    Happy St. Patrick's Day from Ireland! Here it's unusual to put butter in the recipe itself, we would usually make it with buttermilk. But it's lovely to see how recipes evolve as they travel - some of the best soda bread I ever had was when I lived in the US.

    I have not made Irish Soda Bread. Have pondered it many times, but just never have. You have encouraged me to do so and that crunch as well. Yum. And yes…I grew up calling it a case knife. Still do. I know you can feel like you can breathe with the wedding finally completed. I never saw a more precious bride saying her vows. She caused me to cry every time she bent those knees. So sweet.

    I love Irish Soda bread. Some people I know don't like it, say it's dry. Love it sweeter with raisins. Yum. I will try this version. Thanks for the recipes. I have tried some and I really like them.

    We called the knife a “case” knife growing up ⬆️ in Southern WV. Soda bread is sooooooo good down in beef stew and chili.

    Looks good! My mom, who’s from Iredell County, uses a recipe with raisins. It’s so good, and we always have it on St. Paddy’s day.

      Being of Irish descent, the recipe in my family has raisins in ours too, and everyone I know always makes it with raisins. Since I am writing this on St. Patty's Day, I'm gonna bake up a loaf today. You should really consider adding raisins to this recipe. "Tis not be a fittin' loaf without 'em!" ☘ ☘ ☘

    Nice recipe. We do the cross as a blessing on the bread. Saying "In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost". My g-ma also taught us to vent our pies by making three little crosses in the top crust.

    I remember my best friend and I were going on a trip to California to see her brother and her mom who was proud of her husband's heritage of being a true Irishman sent a loaf of Irish Soda Bread with us to have with tea when we finished our daily long drives. I remember it being sooo good with lots of butter on it and hot tea. It was so comforting. So I decided this morning I wanted to make some and finny how things happen but your channel popped up with the recipe. I should have known that!! HAHA. Well I am off to the store soon as I need a few things. Feeling lots better thank God. I'll let ya know how it turned out!

    Great timing! Soda bread is a tradition for us on St Patrick's day. We're not Irish, but in Montana that holiday has been sorta adopted by all immigrant families working together in the mines & logging. The food is the best part to remember. (I'll leave the green beer boilermakers as an interesting bit of my childhood)

    I raised up.my children, you cut the cross in it to bless it and them that eat it.
    Also, to remember Christ's part in St.Patrick's life and that if we choose Him, He will do the same for us.

    Arsh is how my late grandpa Schneider pronounced it too He was born in Mason County WVA but the Family moved to Ohio in the 1910s We ended up in the Akron Ohio area which is referred to as The Capital of West Virginia bc of the amount of expatriates living there and most of us still have the accent and the vocabulary Even my family in Michigan enjoys your videos of mountain vocabulary and remembering the words their grandparents on both sides of the family used to use Thanks so much

      My grandma and her sister cooked so many of the things you do Of course since we retired we went on keto and lost 50 pounds each and don’t eat those delicious carbs anymore lol But we love to reminisce about how good they tasted when our grandmas made them God bless you

    Evening, Miss Tipper, asked my wife, about Soda Bread, and she told me her mother never measured any of the ingredients, of course she probably made it a lot more then you do. After all she was Irish, real Irish. Kilkenny, Ireland. Makes our children half Irish.

    We call sorghum molasses "sargum" hahaha. My uncle had grown that when I was a teenager and we all got together and worked it, harvesting, cutting tops, stripping, feeding the mill while someone drove a tractor around mill (upgraded from a horse or mule), cooking it, skimming it, filling the cans. Great memories! Although....I don't like it at all to eat lol, but I could chew the juice from a sugar cane all day!

    The best time of year to explore the woodlands is in the spring. To spot the bright colors among the leafless trees is where a homestead once stood. I live close to a 30,000 acre National Park and enjoy hiking the 30 miles of trails to explore the old gravesites and now-defunct homes of those who were here before me. Preservation is necessary and should take precedence. I will be preparing Cornbeef and Cabbage for St. Patrick's day and maybe some Soda Bread now - thanks to you!

    Wonderful video. It brings back so many wonderful memories.
    My family Loved Irish soda bread. My mom and her mom made it before me..I'm 77 :). I so dearly miss them all and my only sibling brother.
    Making soda bread now only occasionally for me and my husband..my daughter and husband who lives close she is totally raw vegan. My son and grandkids live in other cities and we do visit often just not often enough :/
    We call the ones made with egg and butter, bannock..so good also when raisins are added or currants. My favorite is raisins in the bannock.
    I make the one without butter or egg most. I just knead mine about three good ones and push it together in the bowl it was mixed in. It will be bumpy top and flour and rises very tall. Because of the quick mix and kneading. Cut a cross to let the fairies out :))
    You can also make a iron skillet version called farls. So yummy used as a sandwich. Just cut the circle into wedges and brown slowly on each side till done..delicious cut across the center and buttered or even better a bacon sandwich....yumm Grandma used to lay a towel over the top to help it finish baking in the iron pan.

    Great bake here....my Irish grandfather always said that soda bread was to the Irish as cornbread is to the rest of us. Basic hearty bread for everyday eating that was quick and delicious. I'd love to try this and do it in a roll format. Basically Irish Soda Rolls by diving the dough into little loaves and doing the crosscut on each. Seems like that would be a really unique way to do it as well as long as being smaller doesn't make them so crunchy that they are like a hockey puck. LOL. Thanks for another great video Tipper!

    Hi Tipper.., don't know if i ever have eaten Irish Soda Bread.. sounds good!! I do like a good homemade bread.. there is nothing like it.. that in a crusty buttered bread and a nice bowl of homemade soup.. for the last meal of the day. It is so comforting to know that bread making is not a lost food way.

    I was wondering if you have ever heard of Squaw Bread, I had it in California, and I can't find it anywhere else. It is hands down the best bread I've ever tasted. I even had some shipped to me from California to Texas but it was stale by the time it arrived. I LOVE IT. No bakeries, no stores, nowhere has it. Please see if you can make it one day. It is a moist, slightly sweet brown bread with I believe maple syrup or molasses in it. It's very moist and delicious!!!

    This looks delicious, esp. as it doesn't have raisins, which give me gastic issues.
    A tip if you don't have buttermilk in the house just add a little vinegar or lemon juice to whole milk and let it sit for 15 minutes. Almost the Same taste as buttermilk.

    If you cut the round dough into quarters before baking, that makes Irish farls. They taste so good with a full Irish breakfast.

      @FreedomsPromise sausages, bacon, fried egg, white pudding, fried farl or potato bread, toast made with soda bread, plus all or some of these:
      -baked beans
      -grilled tomatoes
      - mushrooms
      - bubble & squeak
      Traditionally served with very strong tea 🙂

    I have been to the Smoky Mountain National Park twice, when I visited TN. There is a big loop where you can see wild horses and tour some old cabins that still stand there. I found it extremely interesting.

    Your bread looks wonderful! My grandpa was Irish, so I should try this recipe! I love fresh baked bread of any kind. Bread fresh from the oven with butter spread on it is one of my favorite things to eat. In fact, I could easily leave behind the meat or whatever else was cooked to go with the meal and just make my meal off the bread.....especially fresh cornbread. I just love it!     An Irish friend shared her mother’s recipe with me. She added a couple tablespoons of sugar and in America, raisins. In Ireland, they used red currents. I’ve used dried Cranberries as they are a sweet-tart like dried red currents. ❤️❤️

    I have never heard of this, but I plan to grind my wheat and try it for sure 😉. I love your dough bowl btw! Of course I searched high and low but not a trace of the cookbook could I find ☹️.     So up here near and in the city of Boston, there are several thousand people of Irish descent or directly from Ireland themselves. Irish soda bread is very familiar to me and a bread that I have made many times. I no longer make it, but I remember the taste very well. I remember teaching my mother-in-law to make it the same day she taught me to make Nissu, which is a famous Finnish sweet bread. Thanks for tweaking those memories for me Tipper!

    Love your recipes but enjoy the stories of the area even more. Been thru Murphy on my way to Maggie Valley/Gatlinburg area a few times. Last time we came thru about lunch (from North Mississippi but we spent the night in Cleveland) on Sunday and stopped for a quick bite. Absolutely love the area but next time will detour over to Brasstown.

    Thank you for adding this recipe, Tipper! My oldest son started making Irish Soda Bread in high school for either his foreign language class, or international day. It soon became a hit in our household! We have tweaked the recipe a bit by adding craisins and either pecans or walnuts, and have at times put a drizzle of glaze over top!     I've not made Irish soda bread bc I had some from the store and well, it was not good. I reckon I should try to make my own!
    Your reading about Fontana was very interesting. All I know about that area is wrt the Appalachian Trail. We have quite a few reservoirs that towns or farms disappeared under. There's one nearby that when the water gets low enough you can see a former farm's stone walls.
