- Is there really such a short canal in the UK? What's the story behind it? We continue our narrowboat journey on the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal from Middlewich to almost Barbridge Junction.
Hello! If you are new here we are Caroline and Pete! In 2021, after 10 years living in Texas, we sold up and moved back home to the UK to live full time aboard a 60ft narrowboat with our West Highland Terriers! Join us in our day to day life as we continuously cruise the canals and rivers of the UK. All of the ups, and the downs and everything in between!

Lovely couple, lovely boat. Wished you talked more about your life onboard. What and how your
cooking your dinner? Always interesting to see. Crockpot? Cottage pie? Adventures to the grocery store. How do you bring home your shopping without a car. What do you do after dinner? Little things is what makes it interesting to us 💕 fuel, heating, water fill, dumping waste. We know nothing of these things?
Not sure how many of our videos you have watched so far, but often we include some of these things as they happen, like using the facilities to fill up with water, empty toilets, get rid of rubbish etc. not all our cruising days include that though. We’ve included a bit of cooking here and there. Did you see Pete’s Sunday roast a few episodes back? And me making casserole in the Mr Ds thermal cooker? They make our day watching them live their best lives as boat dogs! These are the last few videos with our old boy Jasper, before we had to say goodbye. It’s hard to cut out any footage with him in so I’m just leaving it all there even if it’s a little repetitive! Lovely memories. Thanks for watching 😊

Maureen was a great lady. She always came out of her cottage whenever we went through the lock and invariably had a packet of Bourbon biscuits for my boys!
The old stables you filmed is/was up for sale recently, £680,000ish I think! 😱xx
That’s lovely that we know someone who knew Maureen! You can’t beat a packet of bourbons! We saw that lovely house for sale too when we passed it later on, and decided it was a little out of our budget 😂

Yep! Sometimes we get asked why Pete doesn’t do the locks and I drive, but I would much rather do the locks and get my steps in 😂

Hi! Re Cows lying down, lying down because it's going to rain is a myth, the main reason is, is that the grass is good and plentiful and they have full rumens, therefore they are lying down chewing the cud which means they regurgitate, re-chew and then re-swallow partially digested food to further help digestion. Lying down is an important activity for cows, as it's when they do most ruminating. Regards Mike

Another lovely, soothing vlog. I gotta say, I am smitten with the brickwork on a lot of these bridges! Bridge 18 was interesting because of the round ornaments on it - are they covering stabilizing rods, or just decorative, I wonder? The house by bridge 18 😍... and the hissing swan 😂😂. Thanks for the wonderful memories. We cruised the Middlewich arm often so really great to see all the familiar sights. Maureen always used to come and greet us, and the last time we went through on the way back while I was finishing the lock she shot off into her garden and picked me the biggest bunch of daisies you've ever seen. We used to moor at Uplands Marina - opposite the Anderton Marina in Northwich.
That was neat seeing him put tge tire down. I know you mentioned in a previous video yhst that yall have go cart tires
Yes we have go cart tyres that are wider than our regular fenders and help stop the boat banging around on the shelf under the water. Some people use wheelbarrow wheels too 👍

Thank you again for a lovely video. Update from the 'states'. Way cooler - Day highs 50's F to near freezing - low to mid 30'sF at night. Leaves falling - not much color due to our long drought this summer. Been raining now but a few months late. Farmers markets are about done. Mainly pumpkins / late tomatoes / potatoes etc. Most of the boats are off the water and winterized and put away. Will not be long before we get our first snow flurries of the season. Hoping for a 'Indian Summer' for a few days of warm weather again. Next month will be my birthday and the start of the holiday season. Thank you for your lovely update! We always enjoy hearing about your little part of the world, especially as our daughter is so close. It’s been a terrible drought all over this year hasn’t it. Friends in Texas have had such high temperatures and no rain for so much longer than usual, a little like our first summer in Houston back in 2011. The leaves are turning here and the sun is lower in the sky so our solar panels are not quite as effective! 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard Thank you for the update. Yes my friend Gary in Texas (firefighter EMT-P) told me about the temps down near Austin area. (south of it). He's now working his part time job as a EMT-P at a haunted house. So don't get much updates on weather lately as he is always working or sleeping.
I am enjoying the apple cider donuts around here. Been lots more rain lately. More then we have had the entire year up to date.

One of our favourite parts of this cruising life is seeing all of the beautiful properties along the canal, and having a look in people’s back gardens 😂😊
The day after the rain was gorgeous. I think I have your Westies sorted but want to make sure. It's Hamish, Jasper and Poppy, right? For a while I thought one was named Julius but then I realized that was the name of the harness. 😋 Just noticed because of Morningstar being 💙not 💚 just how old this is. I remember now that you lost Jasper and Paul drew a picture of him for you. 😢
Yes that’s right for our three westies. This video and the next couple are the last footage we have cruising with Jasper before we had to say goodbye. We are that behind with the videos, and despite doing my best to catch up life just throws to many curve balls. Oh well, it’s lovely to look back and remember 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard I don't think any of the vloggers I follow are up to date so don't worry about that. It is definitely hard to look back at photos and videos of a pet or person you have lost. I think the perfect word is bittersweet. Missing them is bitter but the sweet part is being reminded of all the good memories. 🫂

Thank you! They all adapted really well. We were a little worried about Hamish as he never really liked water when we lived in Texas, but he seems to have forgotten that since we’ve been on the boat! Up on the back with us is where they like to be when we are cruising, rather than inside. We keep their harnesses on all the time, and the handle on the back has saved a few dunkings, getting on and off the boat. They also have life jackets too. They really seem to be living their best life exploring the countryside! 😊

1 Question I have do you ever feel vulnerable in such a nice boat? Or do you stay away from such places? I only ask as I’m deciding between a new build or a 2rd hand boat. Thanks again 🙏🏼
Glad you are enjoying them! As for feeling vulnerable, we always try do some prior research, usually in Facebook groups or with friends, if we are going through unknown towns and moor in recommended places. We have actually never had any trouble anywhere we have moored in 2 years and hope that continues! I wouldn’t say that the newness of the boat attracts more trouble, and I love that we were able to go the new build route to get some design features included that we specifically wanted. Great views and stories obliged. How are you enjoying the canal life it must have its ups and downs like normal house living. How is the boat surviving and is it living up to the standard? What changes would you make now that youre seasoned canal dwellers? UK
Glad you enjoyed it! We are 2 years into this live aboard life now, and no regrets at all! It’s been a steep learning curve for sure, but that’s all been part of the exciting adventure. Yes, there are downsides, dealing with the mud in autumn and winter is probably the worst, and it’s not so easy getting supplies to the boat in winter, walking along muddy and slippery towpaths in rain and sleet with your shopping. That’s when i sometimes question our life choice, and then wake up to amazing views and life is all good again! Regarding the boat, we wouldn’t make any changes to our layout at all. It works so well for us. The only thing we would think about if we had the chance again, would be to choose a semi cruiser stern, rather than a cruiser stern. This has the main seating area forward of the tiller arm. Our stern deck has seating for when we are moored, but you can’t sit there when we are moving as you’re on the way of the person steering! So all in all, life is still wonderful 😊
What a lovely video. Your still photos are gorgeous too. Guessing this was about a year ago now - are you planning to catch up at some point? It would be lovely if you were able to manage it somehow! Lots of work though I know 😊
That's the plan, to one day catch up! We were 6 months behind right from the start, as it took us a while to decide to venture into the world of vlogging! The first videos were a mish mash of video footage and stills that I just took for our own use, but so glad we have so many people from all over the world enjoying our travels too! We have found over the last few months especially that life is unpredictable, and editing sometimes has to take a back seat. I’m aiming to get more that one video out a week now, but also don’t want to rush and compromise the quality. It’s a hard thing to balance! We shall see how it works out, and maybe one day we will be just a few weeks behind 😊
With a lot more experience than when you fimed this, have you found a better solution for departing when the wind has you pinned against the side? In yachting we'd used springs and sometimes large fenders, but I don't know what works for narrowboats. It seems that going out stern first might be simpler?
We really haven’t developed a better technique as it’s just so unpredictable. It was harder at that location on the Middlewich branch too because of the shallow edges, and just churning up silt as we tried to move. What we have learned is to not cruise on a windy day if we can avoid it at all!! Thanks for watching 😊
Is it easy to see what's ahead of you with those pot plants on the roof of your narrow boat?
We got used to them being so tall, much taller than we had envisaged when we planted them, and vowed to choose shorter plants in future! Thanks for watching 😊

Boats were stuck either side of the breach, so had to change their travel plans, and it took quite a long time to fix. 😳

The last episode you had just turned off the Shroppie onto the Middlewich, now you are suddenly in Middlewich and seem to be heading back down towards Barbridge Junction. All very confusing (not helped by my Nicolson's, which delights in not giving place names by the canals, so I can't follow all that well).
Yes you’re right, but as the Middlewich Branch is only 10 miles long, and we knew we would be turning round and coming right back immediately, we decided to just film it one way to not be too repetitive. Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from filming too, just to enjoy the ride. So the 2 videos covering this stretch I’ve tried to show different features (and incorrectly said Bramble Cuttings instead of Sykes Hollow last week if you noticed). Thank you for joining us on our travels, we really appreciate it 😊

Gorgeous scenery, really interesting too. Loved that brick house by the canal, must have been a cottage for canal workers long ago, and the matching brick on the stable block. I wondered if that was now someone's reimagined home, but were there any windows? I didn't see any canal side. Such pretty brick work though. Had to smile when I saw the drone. There has to be a drone, right? Just hope it doesn't end up in the canal or tree! Thanks for a lovely vlog.
Glad you enjoyed it! They were some lovely properties weren’t they. The converted stable block was on the market recently, so we got to have a peek inside from the photos on the listing, and there are windows on the other side. We really were in the fence about getting a drone, and then treated ourselves for our birthdays, and I think wisely took out the insurance too! Upcoming videos will have the drone footage which I think really does add another dimension. I’m always holding my breath until it comes safely back to Pete’s hands though! 😊
