  • TIGER island MALDIVES? - Sailing INDIAN OCEAN
    Sailing through THE MALDIVES has been one surprise after another.
    After a successfully swimming with nurse sharks, we wanted another challenge. We heard stories about tiger island, Fuvahmulah, across the equator in the south of the country. This week we sailed our floating home to this amazing island and got the chance to swim with the tiger sharks there. we were also happy to discover that this enchanting atoll has so much more to offer to visitors. No visit is complete without a trip to the Kodakilhi wetlands for a mud bath at the fountain of youth.

    BACK STORY
    In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
    Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
    The plan? To sail around the world.
    Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

    I seen to recall an episode in which you, Rob, were greatly and rightly afraid of tiger sharks. (Correction: they were bull sharks known for being aggressive.) Tomorrow, Sunday, my other sailing channel, Follow The Boat, has an episode debunking the drama and B.S. on many sailing channels. I already plan to tout your channel as completely devoId of B.S. ( Hm... Those were William Burroughs' exact words about Paul Bowles: "A man completely devoId of B.S.") never knew until now that Eminem sported a beard -- I'm obviously from the Slim Shady era! Great video as always. Best regards. P.s.: Ivan wagging his finger at a shark [subtext: care for a sample?] dw.

      Hello Daniel, thanks for the no BS promotion. Bull sharks are still not one of the species we would want to willing put ourselves in the water with, or great whites. The tiger sharks have there moments too but off the top three most aggressive sharks they seem the most predictable to swim with.

    Interesting episode guys. For a start, anything with "tiger" in the title eg...tiger, tiger shark, tiger snake...down on the Bass Strait islands and Tasmania too, I avoid. Exempt is Tigerlily of course. Then the Hamil family take us to the biggest "stag wallow" I've ever seen. During the roar (rut) those stag wallows can cover a big area, and they stink. And that place looks like one. Yeah of course I'd get into it with you guys. I know it's not a stag wallow. Btw, when you get home, if you know where to look, there's a free, volcanic mud wallow, near the roadside, at the back edge of the Rotorua Golf Course. Could be a bit warm though. 😮 Thanks heaps for sharing. Take care of yourselves.

    Great episode guys. Oh on our news the other day was a thing about the Maldives doing a heap of sand works to build up the islands to help protect from climate change!

    • @TheCruisingKiwis
      @TheCruisingKiwis  3 місяці тому +2

      There is indeed plenty of sand work for sure but not by any measure to safeguards against sea level rise. It is all reclamation out into lagoons and only 1m above high tide, 2m at a stretch. None is to reinforce existing dwellings, which raises many questions. I can't imagine banks would underwrite this activity nor insurance if they knew they'd lose their investment in a decade or two. In 1987, scientists Etal screamed in the media that Maldives would be under water in 30 years' time. I'm becoming a bit sceptical huh but questions need to be asked and debate.

    Too bad about Ivan remaining behind. I think he would be the one with no qualms about swimming in the mud pond. The adventurous type.
    I also have a healthy fear of the predatory species of sharks, Rachel. I'm not a diver and am sure my fears would evaporate if I was below the surface amd swimming with them.
    Beach swimmers seem to take the brunt of most "bad encounters." Just this last week there a reported Bull Shark attack on a woman swimmer. Then 30 MINUTES later, and 4 MILES away, 2 teens were attacked. A Bull Shark is blamed for that one also (seems like the same to me).
    The wreck dive was spectacular! Even through your lens and on UA-cam the colors came across very well. I know they must have been breath taking in person.
    I imagine the next fabulous video will be you guys checking out of the Maldives and heading down for the Seychelles. Just remember to drag those fishing lines! Dinner is just a nibble, jump, and splash away 🎣

    • @TheCruisingKiwis
      @TheCruisingKiwis  3 місяці тому +1

      Ivan missed out big time with the mud bath, I think he would have loved it. Maybe I didn’t sell the concept correctly because Declan wasn’t that keen either. Even when we got there he wasn’t sure he would get in. But the Hippos got it right, nothing like wallowing in cool mud on a hot sunny day.
      We would be very wary of getting in the water with bull sharks, they seem much more skittish and unpredictable than tiger sharks, although tigers have their moments too.

    • @sedatedape315
      @sedatedape315 3 місяці тому

      @@TheCruisingKiwis sadly Bulls make up the majority of the serious and fatal shark attacks here in Florida. Even up the top on our Gulf side, where these most recent attacks happened, the water is so warm (actually hot!). You really wouldn't expect migratory sharks in such hot waters. And a fair number of Bull attacks happen in our Intercoastal Waterways also.
      Those are some scary SOBs!

    Good morning from Center Point Texas. It is early Sunday morning here, June 16, and I am sitting here with coffee and had to watch this video again, it always seems maybe better the second time around. I loved all those underwater shots of that ship and even the sharks, amazing. That mud hole was something else, leave it up to Rob to find the one spot that was deeper and liked that slow motion replay. I wonder who first thought of going into that mud like that, and also what cause's it, how did it become a mud hole like that. Well, I guess I better get busy, I have to mow the back yard today and do some weed eating yet. Hope all is well with y'all, stay safe and keep up the great job of videos.
