Two years ago (April 2016) my husband killed himself. The person I was before his violent death is gone forever. I listen to this song for hours at a time because it reminds me that our time on this planet is quite brief, and in a few years, there will come a time when I too "go home" and the experiences (and pain) of this earth will be over. The lyrics, together with the beautiful melody, is a glimpse of heavenly peace and beauty.

This was the final song sung by a cousin for both of my parent's funerals. I held it together until I heard the words and knew the two most important people in my life were gone. It's so beautiful and will stay with me for ever..

Natural and seemingly effortless, and possibly even 'beautiful' singing, maybe, but not nearly as much in tune with the music as Annie Haslem's version at ua-cam.com/video/2MVRdrIbDgQ/v-deo.html. I know which I'd like listening to better. And check out www.americanmusicpreservation.com/GoinHome.htm to see what the original was really about: "The Largo, with its haunting English horn solo, is the outpouring of Dvorak's own home-longing". Nothing to do with death.

This woman is an incredible gift to humanity. Consider that English may not even be her primary language. My Dad is a huge fan (he is 82 years) and has shared her with me. How can one not contemplate the wonders of life and the universe and our meaning here while listening to Sissel open her heart and pour out eternal love? She has offered us what we can each do ourselves: be the vessel of the love of God.
she speaks absolutely PERFECT English with NO British dialect. I love Charlotte Church too but she DOES have a strong British dialect (she's British though). she has a beautiful voice...
When I was 14 years old, during a week of work experience, I was tasked with screening phone calls in between some other tasks at a managing company. The phone rang, and I picked it up, presented myself and the company I was at. The most angelic voice I’ve ever heard spake, through the tinny speakers of a 90’s land line, words I will never forget; “Hi, it’s Sissel Kyrkjebø here, is [name withheld] available?”. I immediately fell in love and have been reeling ever since. It’s a crime that she’s not more well known, her voice is the utmost perfection possible for humankind to create.
My dear wife of 54 years died four years ago from pancreatic cancer ; after 18 months treatment, she decided to end her treatment as it had ceased to have a positive effect. So we sat together and arranged her funeral and this beautiful rendition we chose for the photo montage
54 years. I knew a couple like that. she broke her hip and fell (its rarely the other way). she never fully recovered. after she passed her husband (outwardly gruff) was a lost soul. although he was healthy quite suddenly he was not. she was in fact his "rock". he passed less than 3 months later. the family doctor stated that he passed due to a broken heart. he simply chose not to go on without her. Are you still with us, sir? Or perhaps a better question might be... do you want to be?
Sissel Kyrkjebø is an angel sent from heaven, she was put on this earth to sing that song, to comfort all those who listen to it ,especially those who have terminal illnesses, her beauty and her voice can only be that of an angel ,for only an angel could sing that so the way she does . when my time comes the last hing I want to hear is this song and only sung by Sissel

I don't see how anyone could honestly dislike this song, sung by one of the most beautiful voices in the history of music, and with the plus of being by one of the most beautiful singers as well. Only a jealous person or one whose brain is entirely fried could honestly hit "dislike" after watching this. Sissel, we love you so much. Thank you for hours and hours of pure joy you've given us all.
Oh you pejorative simplistic souls. What someone has done is taken a movement out of the context in which it was written and used it for other purposes. Purists might not like that; some might think it detracts from what the original creator intended; I'm in that camp, the theme is better for no words - as a result I would neither like nor dislike this interpretation but I certainly respect both those who do either.
There is irony sublime here, Neil, in your use of pejorative and simplistic. Perhaps you recognize it now. This composition was derived from Dvorak's time in America where he attempted to replicate the mood in gospel singing among the black population. He did a great job. That others have added a libretto is simply a modification, and some would say a welcome variation. Those who disdain such creativity obviously don't appreciate the appeal it has for others. It happens that the words are typical of the expressions one would have heard back in the day, sung by an old slave.
Don't be silly. There's no disdain. And it's not simply adding a libretto. You may welcome it, it's your preference. I do not. The effect is less than the original; there are many such attempts and this is indeed one of the better ones. But it is not creative, it is derivative, a fact that I know all too well, since my talents lie in the derivative camp. Valuable nontheless, but not truly creative.

I had my mom play this at my grandpa's funeral, too. I'm overseas and was unable to be there. This song will forever be a part of me. Grandpas are special people and I sure miss mine.
It’s taken me every moment of my 62 years to hear something so beautiful. This is as spiritual, as religious, as magnificent as any music ever performed. I am simply in awe, overcome with joy, and forever lost in the depth of this phenomenal music. Thank you Sissel, the choir, and the orchestra, for this gift of a lifetime.
Sheis so wonderful and makes me feel better about losing my husband of many years to lung cancer, so sad and I feel better just hearing her sing, such a beautiful lady too, and what a voice! Thank you Sissel!

This song is so touching my heart. I cry. I have left my home town for almost 18 years. The word in this song is my mood now. I love it. I feel like the most high is around me. He is calling me home. I am wandering so long.
We played this for you dad on the day we celebrated your life. We wanted to keep you with us but God wanted you more. We miss you every day Dad and mums is sad you have gone home. Mum knows your with your mam and dad now and not in any pain. Love you dearly dad, we miss you every single day xxx

I would have loved this for my mothers funeral but l knew l would cry my eyes out and so would my son and daughter. Why do we all think we need to keep control in front of others? This song and this beautiful singer with the voice of an angel is perfect but oh so moving .
Excellent! I have only just discovered this young lady, thanks to the magic of browsing on UA-cam. Superb song for the wee small hours when life can get on top of you..
Probably my favorite song in all the world. And I "went home" on September 5, 2018 but was sent back by the angels. It's as beautiful as you could possibly imagine - times a million.

I've heard this tune more times than I cared to. I was there to say good bye to a fellowsoldier. This music some how eases the pain. I've never heard it done more beautifully. She truly has an angel's voice. Thank you for sharing. Gives me a chance to say that good bye one last time. Wish it all would end.
+Glen McGregor you hang in there kiddo.... the song is beautiful and speaks to you.. comforting and consoles you.....play as often as u need to... God keep u safe
It breaks my heart that young people (men and women) are dying in some far away place most people can't even find on the map. It's so hard to try and explain to families why their child will not be coming home, ever. No parent should have to bury a child. They can teach you how to do the job, but not how to turn it off.
I don't know what to say to comfort you.. I remember 2 days before my mom died I told her not to hang on for our sakes..I have always relied on help from above even when my husband died at age 50 it was all that got me thru I was 47 and all I could say to Him was" Please help me get thru this.".I had been unconscious and dying of pneumonia when a priest came to give me the last rites.. I came to while he was blessing my feet and startled him and he called for the nurses and they were amazed.. he said it was my miracle for me not to question and I have had a strong faith since then.. I don't want to preach to you because wars have so many causes some good some real bad.. my son was in the artillery .. how to turn it off try asking just asking for help ask often just ask oh please just ask and you are in my prayers every day from now on,, there is a Latin expression" credendo vides" believing I see..... Oh Glen BELIEVE.. and how wonderful that you were there for him
What a voice - unfortunately only just come across this piece but it will be played often. Also, she must be the sexiest singer ever - the facial expressions during this piece are mesmerising .
To believe in God is easy as you can feel the Sun & see our earth. HOWEVER SISSEL, is one of the Angels that God has given us in order for us to remember 🙏 that GOD exists...!!! ❤...
About as close to perfection as human endeavour may ever get in the musical sphere... the great shame is that Dvorak would never get to hear possibly the most beautiful voice ever sing the poignant lyrics of his student set to his inspired music..
A giant floating hippie? LOL! Now that would be a sight to behold;) I like to think of it as the song says, "a door" we transition through on our way home.
For my beloved Mum and Dad who I will miss forever. You've gone home now my dearest parents. I love you and always will. The missing is hard though xxx
@@britishgeorgianmusicacadem9091 Sugary? Yeah, I guess it is that. But they really are meant to appeal to different groups of people. To tell you the truth, I also prefer the original.

My mother in law was dying from cancer and was in a coma. My wife and her family were at her mother's bedside in Pleasanton California. I was at home in Oregon. I called my wife on the telephone and played this You Tube version of Sissel's Going Home. My wife held the telephone to her mother's ear. She said it was less than a minute after Sissel's last note that her mother breathed her last breath.
It doesn't get any better than Sissel. Such clarity, beauty and reverent delivery. Only fault I have is that she can't pronounce the "j". I'm a professional singer and also teach people to speak English...if she calls me I will help with accent reduction! Love her....one of the very best singers of our time.

As well as having the most beautiful voice that I have ever heard, she is a stunningly beautiful woman...talk about having it all.
No more modesty : naked shoulders
This is so beautiful ❤️🌷❤️
My beautiful daughter
Lisa-Marie went home to heaven 28th Dec 2019 aged 38yrs old 💔😇💔
Mum misses you Forever babygirl 💔😇💔😇💔
@@susanpower9620 I'm so very sorry for your loss. May God give you strength. I lost my mom on the 1st of August this year.
@@stephaniejones4749 Hello i am so truly sorry for the loss of your beautiful Mum 💔🙏💔
Have faith our Angels will always guide us through our lives God bless you Susie ❤️😇❤️😇x
Can't write the words to describe the feelings this Lady inspires in my Soul but I do have a serious lump in my throat.
Angelic would do
I do suspect she carries a spark from above.
Sissel has been a great star for me more than 40 years. She is the best female singer I have ever heard.
This song was played at my grandfathers funeral and I want it to be played at mine. Brings tears to my eyes. Miss you grandpa.
I had my mom play this at my grandpa's funeral, too. I'm overseas and was unable to be there. This song will forever be a part of me. Grandpas are special people and I sure miss mine.
Rest in peace Willie. Well always love and miss you.
My own funeral plans include this song and rendition by Sissel.
I'm convinced that if music plays as we go to heaven, it is Sissel singing this song
Amazing voice
Sheis so wonderful and makes me feel better about losing my husband of many years to lung cancer, so sad and I feel better just hearing her sing, such a beautiful lady too, and what a voice! Thank you Sissel!
Awww, so sorry about your loss Suzanne. I truly understand how it feels losing a loved one, my wife passed while having our daughter, wasn't easy for me though but I'm grateful to God for today 🙏. My deep and sincere condolences, how have you been? 🌺 😢
Such a beautiful voice and this song is so touching at a time when a dear friend is on his way home.
Just beautiful! A gift that she was meant to share with the world.....and we will be better for it.
All we have to do is stop and listen!
I love Sissel and her versatility. Sissel is at the top echelon at both opera and normal singing. I could listen to her for hours.
Sissel has gone home and come back as an Angel What clarity and beauty
This song is so touching my heart. I cry. I have left my home town for almost 18 years. The word in this song is my mood now. I love it. I feel like the most high is around me. He is calling me home. I am wandering so long.
This also makes me weep ... but in perhaps a rather different way!!!!!!!!!
She leaves me speechless.
RIP Dad. April 5 2018. I lost a part of me that I will not have back on this earth. I still cry for you Dad. Mike Mauger was what men try to be.
sorry for your loss... I still have my dad and can't imagine what it's like. Take care of yourself and your family
We played this for you dad on the day we celebrated your life.
We wanted to keep you with us but God wanted you more. We miss you every day Dad and mums is sad you have gone home. Mum knows your with your mam and dad now and not in any pain. Love you dearly dad, we miss you every single day xxx
Some Artist you dance along too. Some Artist you sing along too. This Artist is an angel sent by god for us too watch, listen and enjoy with pure wonderment and Amazement at her truly god given talent.Thank-you Sissel God bless you our Angel....
I would have loved this for my mothers funeral but l knew l would cry my eyes out and so would my son and daughter. Why do we all think we need to keep control in front of others? This song and this beautiful singer with the voice of an angel is perfect but oh so moving .
So did my wife Edeltraud last week, my greatest love for 48 years.
I love this song. It was one of my Daddy’s favorites and was requested to be sung at his funeral.
❤❤❤
❤❤❤
Excellent! I have only just discovered this young lady, thanks to the magic of browsing on UA-cam. Superb song for the wee small hours when life can get on top of you..
Know what you mean...
Me too! Where has this beautiful woman been hiding?
Me cannot believe I never heard of her before
Probably my favorite song in all the world. And I "went home" on September 5, 2018 but was sent back by the angels. It's as beautiful as you could possibly imagine - times a million.
Rose looks for the AVE MARIA by DIMASH QUDAIBERGEN composed by Igort Kutroy premiered at the "New Wave 202" in Sochi ... It will make you fly to the skies, it is the most beautiful vocalization I have ever heard in my life... Health from SPAIN
You had an near death experience it appears. I am gladdened by your report back, reassuring. Thanks. Did you publish any article etc. about it to read more if possible. Tx
That's very reassuring rosemary, I bet its a beautiful place there, bet you didn't want to come back bless you
This is good to o hear. I feel that I may be 4:18 going home soon. I'm 3.5months away from my first stroke and fear another despite anticoagulants and blood thinners.
You will go when GOD wants you in the meantime enjoy your life live it to the fullest. Thank the Lord for each day you live. Make others happy and know that you are loved.@@catherinecarlson6164
Have made up my mind to have Sissel singing "Going Home" at my funeral.
Roderick Brineman In person?
So am I
Roderick Brineman Had it.sung at my Dad’s funeral.
Me too
Listen to this version

Overwhelmed. Dvorjak’s finest piece, sung so well. Nothing can compare. Sublime.
Если в раю поют прекрасные ангелы, то именно такими голосами❤
Perhaps the most crystalline voice I have ever heard; and I'm 77
Bobby McGuyer
Crystalline, a lovely descriptor
Alison Krauss is ethereal. Try listening to her, too
I've heard this tune more times than I cared to.
Oh Glen BELIEVE.. and how wonderful that you were there for him
Oh the furtility of war!
One of the most lovely voices and songs I have ever heard !!
A valuable Norwegian beauty .... voice, face ... everything ... clear like a beautiful bell!
I think this is one of the most beloved songs ever, especially if a loved one has passed. It brings comfort to me.
Smiles, hi Sylvia 🌺
What a voice - unfortunately only just come across this piece but it will be played often. Also, she must be the sexiest singer ever - the facial expressions during this piece are mesmerising .
Great! This voice is a crystal voice.
My God what a beautiful woman... I mean voice... I mean everything!
Yian Pap un
I think Catherine Jenkins can compete
in the beauty department.
But not the voice.
i had this song played on the bagpipes at my mothers funeral god bless and she has a fantastic voice love you mom
She has the voice of an angel. Enough to bring tears to my eyes.
Amazing rendition it evokes emotion especially for those military men returning home from postings abroad our heroes one and all
I played this last Sept at my beloved husbands funeral........ I often listen to it now , it brings me great comfort
Hello how are you doing?
This the most beautiful voice I have ever listened too voice of a angle it the first time I have listened to this buethful lady
I cry just because her voice is so beautiful omg 😭
I love you Sissel;)
Thank you for singing this beautiful song so beautifully!
We are all going home, just getting there at different times;)
steve Sun I know
When I hear this song, all my fear is gone. The power of believing in something greater than yourself. Merry Christmas Claire Ryan!
A giant floating hippie? LOL! Now that would be a sight to behold;)
I like to think of it as the song says, "a door" we transition through on our way home.
Ooops! Sorry, I don't really think of God that way.
I want to hear her voice and this song while I fly toward heaven~! God bless you, Sissel, you're an angel~
Meanwhile, listen to her do "Slow Down" with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. It's stunning!
I imagine falling peacefully asleep to this song some day and being carried to my real home ....
For my beloved Mum and Dad who I will miss forever. You've gone home now my dearest parents. I love you and always will. The missing is hard though xxx
Love this lady and her magnificent voice
Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 2nd movement is one of my favorite melodies
... and is very different to this sugary mess!
@@britishgeorgianmusicacadem9091 Sugary? Yeah, I guess it is that. But they really are meant to appeal to different groups of people. To tell you the truth, I also prefer the original.
@@britishgeorgianmusicacadem9091 Ha-ha!: )
Who among us is not moved by this remarkable voice. Surely she teaches angels to sing.
God, how much i miss going home!!! This voice comes from the Heavens. the more i hear her voice the more tears i shed.
This song isn't about going home. It's a song about reaching the spiritual afterlife. God's house. Heaven. Whatever you prefer to call it. This is a song about death and dying...and it is beautiful.
What a Blessing this is, I lost mom 3 months ago due to dementia. Although she was 95 I know a lot of you had stated your lost your mums at such a young age. God Bless to all of you
Dvorak would be very pleased of listening to his melody sung this way. What a delight!
My Husband died on 4th November after an heroic battle against cancer. We will hopefully be able to play this music at his funeral service. He always remained positive he would recover and his attitude kept him going for over 3 years. God bless you my Darling. You will be with your Mom and Dad now. I know you are at peace my love. See you soon. Love you to heaven and back. Xxxxx
Sorry to hear of your loss.I hope this music helped.
A most natural and lovely voice, and what a beautiful woman, SISSEL Kyrkjeböe.
I heard this song for the first time at my dear friend’s celebration of life. It’s so peaceful and beautiful. RIP MJ
so soft and clear voice, i didnt expect this beautiful sound
My mother in law was dying from cancer and was in a coma. My wife and her family were at her mother's bedside in Pleasanton California. I was at home in Oregon. I called my wife on the telephone and played this You Tube version of Sissel's Going Home. My wife held the telephone to her mother's ear. She said it was less than a minute after Sissel's last note that her mother breathed
her last breath.
The greatest singer I have ever heard and the most beautiful
It is said that the dying still hear after they cane no longer communicate with them. So keep telling them that you love them.
CERTAINLY ONE OF THE WORLDS BEST SINGERS
A song that makes me feel the arms of heartwarming mother.
How could any person, or thing, on the face of the earth give this a thumb's down? Do they feel it's unfair to others to sing this beautifully?
Probably the devil or Justin Beiber.
You're right -- those are the only explanations. Or, perhaps, Kayne West
NO, they march to a different drummer, i.e. LUCIFER!
A personification of "Beauty and Talent"!
It doesn't get any better than Sissel. Such clarity, beauty and reverent delivery. Only fault I have is that she can't pronounce the "j". I'm a professional singer and also teach people to speak English...if she calls me I will help with accent reduction! Love her....one of the very best singers of our time.
Thank you so much for this upload. I had never even heard of her until a couple of years ago and now try to view each of her performances. Outstanding world class singer.
For my dearest friend Lwho passed away last Feb . 11, 2021. Also for my husband who passed away on Feb. 16 5 years ago . Missing them !
Awww, so sorry about your loss Deanna. I truly understand how it feels losing a loved one, my wife passed while having our daughter, wasn't easy for me though but I'm grateful to God for today 🙏. My deep and sincere condolences, how have you been? 🌺 😢
Listened thru tears with heartfelt emotions. Such beauty producing beautiful soul stirring music.
