I was 14 years old in collinsville. I had my mother drop me off at the roller skating rink in Fairview heights. I ended up being stranded for four days, staying with a different family. A volunteer in a big, monster-looking truck drove me home finally.
I was attached to the Marine Corps Reserve unit at St. Louis as a Sergeant Inspector. During the blizzard we helped various law enforcement agencies by using our jeeps as patrol vehicles. I had two officers riding with me. Primarily we were delivering blankets, etc. to senior citizens. It was quite an memorable experience.
Made a bunch of money shoveling snow. Again and again. One customer had a neighbor that turned us down during the first snow. Wanted us to shovel the walk after the SECOND onslaught. We had to turn him down.
Yeah I remember that storm well. That Saturday I had went bowling in the afternoon. It had been raining for about a day. On the way home from bowling I noticed I only had a quarter of tank of gas in my car. The weather came on the radio in the car and they said the rain was going to end as snow flurries in the evening. I decided to not get gas and go out Sunday and get gas so I would have a full tank to go to work on Monday. Was that a mistake!!!

Sunday January 31, 1982 The great Snow of '82
Was working at the Park Hill Drug Store, 2300 and Dexter. We ran out of everything: pop. milk, bread, candy, toilet paper -- you name it.
