Conditions caused by upper cervical instability that can be treated with Prolotherapy

  • Ross Hauser, MD gives an overview of the most common conditions associated with upper cervical instability that he has seen over 30 years and which can respond well to Prolotherapy when there is a C1-C2 instability component to the case. Often, these conditions are overlooked by primary care physicians or even specialists as having an upper cervical spine instability component, let alone that the cluster of symptoms may all be related to that same issue. In our offices, we help patients identify if there is an undiagnosed upper cervical instability problem that may be leading to their worsening symptoms and a multitude of diagnoses. Then, create an individualized Regenerative Medicine treatment plan that can address the root cause to help resolve the reason why the issue became so disabling in the first place.

I agree that cervical instability can cause all these things, but I’ve done prolotherapy now quite a bit and it has not cured me. That said, I also have fibro as well. Also, some of the symptoms listed can also be caused by neuro-occular brain injuries that also cause neck tension and many headaches, and too often doctors assume the neck is the root, but it might be both. I stopped after about 8 rounds because I just couldn’t handle the week pain attack that came with it and then went back again later in the year, but I just cannot keep it up. The backlash too intense. Imagine being trapped in the worst migraine imaginable going right down into your face to your teeth, trigeminal neuralgia attack and pain that links to your neck, shoulder and rotator cup area all triggered from the treatment. It is torture level pain for a week at least. I’d be more inclined to try prp, but I give up on the prolo. I must have done it 14 times total? I did take a break after around 8. I forgot how bad it was and did my last ever a week ago and the pain has no eased day or night.
I take all recommended supplements. Oddly very gentle yoga by someone very skilled in neck issues seems to be the best so far. Don’t put any pressure in the neck at all. Just the light stuff. I found it more useful than vigorous yoga ( muntil muscle strength builds up. and covering similar exercises to physio. It gives you control over your body unlike physio where you just do what feels okay.
For anyone suffering huge from these types of migraines fiorinal c1/2 seems to be the only medication that helps me. Cannot take it daily though as apparently it can give people dull headaches if they do (or else that’s a myth, not sure. Just what I was told). Oxycodone and gabapentin might help some as well
When I have time I’ll come back and list the supplements they have me take when getting prolo. Nerve injections with lidocaine and a little glucose oddly help reduce over all intensity of the headaches if done weekly.

There is a hope!! From 2018 I had big migraines (from instability C1-C2 greater occipital nerves), sometimes 3 times in one week, my tongue is little burning. After second session of prolotherapy I don't take ANY painkillers, I don't have ANY migraines. Level of my pain drop from 7,5 to maybe 3 in 5 weeks (for me is game changer, I couldn't believe for this day-its 6 week after first session ). Now I have pain on back of my head (I feel bad pressure and tongue burning), but I have hope for better future now :). In Poland I payed 250$ for one session. I know is only beginning of my journey (I need to recover my neck curve-military neck- I will have gentle traction it should help for instability also, my doctor said thaht I should avoid any manipulation), but after so many years in pain, I finally have hope.

Why hasn't this possibility for treatment been presented to my wife (42yr) who suffers from meniere's and some issue in her upper cervical area? She even shows a forward leaning posture with the way she holds her head. All that was mentioned was cortisone shots, drilling into the skull, and sea sickness medicine. Is this a new or expensive (therefore not covered by insurance) treatment? I shared this with her and she's finally got hope in her eyes after suffering for 5 years. I don't know if relevant, but it started the next day after she had me walk up and down her back to "crack" it.

Cervical instability will be the leading cause of most ailments in the future, everybody is addicted to their phones and most of us have desk jobs where we are hunched over all day.
I am so grateful that you’re making these videos but you need to do more to spread awareness of this problem you can change the world, millions of people are all suffering from a number of different neurological ailments that all stems from the NECK! There’s probably not enough medical research or evidence to prove this but I am 100% certain that this is the case.
The upper cervical region is the most important neurologically but it’s also the most prone to misalignment, any subluxation in this region can have detrimental effects to your health.

I was diagnosed with bppv, then it was possible eustachian tube dysfunction, occipital neuralgia because of the migraines that accompanied or vestibular migraines. Last was bilateral Meniere's. I was a kickboxer. The doctors knew this. Most of the male doctors thought it was awesome. I mostly had male doctors. I'd had head and neck injuries rinse and repeat for years but no neck pain. I was living on fluids for over a year with barf bags stuffed in every nook and cranny just in case. Knowing how to drive while dry heaving was not a skill I aspired to master as a child or ever. It was a nightmare. I got steroid injections in the back of my head. Getting off the anticholinergics helped tremendously because they're often overused and not enough prescribing doctors know the difference between anticholinergic syndrome and lupus so, that was years of awful. I'm lucky to be living... Getting off all the meds, massage, stretches and strengthening has me living mostly like normal. Wish I'd had a doctor like you to help me figure it out. Thank you for helping to inform people.

    Very informative!
I have had 8+ prolotherapy treatments for my cervical instability, but unfortunately I have not had much benefit. It did help my shoulder, but I continue to be very dizzy, brain-foggy, clumsy and getting lethargy and numbness down my arms, thumbs and sometimes down into my legs, even making me feel feverish at times...basically I feel like crap all day!!
I had a DMX scan, and it showed severe instability in my axis and atlas vertabre which are basically squeezing and banging into my vagus nerve all day.
So in 2 weeks I will be visting a doctor in Colorado for a different injection treatment, one that addresses the alar ligament and those surrounding nerves with the stem cell injection actually entering the mouth and going through the roof of it to reach those ligaments directly... I really hope this treatment works. I do greatly value prolotherapy as well, but in my case, the traditional injections just weren't getting to where my ligaments needed them.

All of those symptoms,my doctors just told me everything is fine. But i think there must be something causing all these, and i found your video that explains everything. I JUST WONDER if there are exercises that can help all these since Prolotherapy seems impossible to me here in far away place.
Looking forward for your more videos/webinars.

Hy Mygen, Thank you for your kind words and we are very sorry to hear about your progressive health symptoms. Based on your description, you sound like a lot of cases that we see here, and we'd be happy to discuss your case in more detail and see if you sound like a good candidate to travel to our office, if that becomes feasible for you in the future. We understand not everyone can travel here for care tho, and you may want to try finding someone locally, such as a chiropractor, who can guide you on ways to try and strengthen your cervical curve and take a closer look at your case for individualized recommendations. Prolotherapy is the only treatment that directly treats the ligaments, and exercises are more for the muscles instead of the ligaments, specifically. We wish you all the best in navigating the resources in your country. Again, feel free to reach out to us directly if travel may be an option for you in the future. Take care for now.

Wow thank you so much for the informative video. I have had trauma to my cervical and thoracic spine and both areas have had fusion surgery. Ever since my accident I have complained of constant nausea, headaches,, balance problems, drop attacks, temperature regulation problems, dizziness, sob, feeling faint , pale and clammy, problems with memory, inability to find the right word or say the wrong word in a sentence or forget what i am talking about half way through a sentence. Chronic pain issues. Specialists here in NZ are just blowing me off, saying there is nothing wrong with me. I know there is something not right, I am a registered nurse and before the accident I was a strong, hardworking, energetic, never had sick days or got sick, sporty, fun living, social person. Now I am unable to work due to feeling so unwell all the time and I don’t go out, socialise. I am unable to exercise as much as I’d like too. I’m at a better space mentally and in a place of acceptance that it is what it is. The Doctors here need to learn a few things from you, I’ve been very disappointed in the care or lack of interest and care received. As a nurse myself, I was always thinking outside the square, constantly looked up things I was unsure of, gained as much knowledge as I could, would ensure pts are given the best possible care I could provide and treated them with kindness respect and understanding. Thank you for this information it has helped me a lot in my search for answers or theories on what could be going on. :)

In 2005 I had anterior cervical corpectomy and discectomy and fusion from c2-c5 to correct the damage from DDD and stenosis. Since then I’ve been suffering with brain fog, dry eyes, mouth, hair and blurry vision…possibly due to Sjogrens . Have hand cramps. Also, the c2-c3 did not heal….the screw broke and I cannot bend my neck back without the two pieces of bone displacing. The other levels healed fine. Is that considered cervical instability and be the cause of my AI and other above mentioned issues?

God Bless you Dr, Ross for the first time I feel that I can now understand my real problem, I have been suffering from migraines through out my adulthood and now I'm 60yrs old I feel my life has changed with these symptoms you mentioned with the upper cervical instability getting me down and since three years back my problems got very severe and yet none of the many doctors that I have seen was able to properly analyze me apart from the latest Dr. who had instructed me to get an MRI and found out that my C5 -6 showed mild posterior disc bulge indenting the cal sac with a right paracentral disc herniation of 7x5 mm with mild uncovertebral causing moderate to severe right and minimal left neural foramina narrowing compressing the right exiting nerve root with minimal spinal canal stenosis showing AP diameter of 10mm. I have been to a chiro for a couple of sets of alignments felt better for some time and now the symptoms are back again. Dr. Ross, I've posted on other Vids. This issue of cervicl instability Fascinates Me !!! I have it for sure with Disc herniations , DDD in many vertebrae, Crevical , Lumbar Stenosis and even L2- L3 Disc herniations protruding into the spinal canal, and the to the front into the stomach. Also, T-9 / T-10 thoracic disc herniation combined with dextroscoliosis at 25 degrees due to a 1 inch shorter right leg for over 50 years. Anyway, I would "think" that many of maladies that you mention here : Tinnitus on through , Depression, Anxiety, and on and on.... would stem from Cervical Instabilities. Betcha, regular doctors, most if not all completely ignorant of this, fail to detect that the maladies suffered and experienced are coming from THIS !!! Including psychologists, psychiatrists , and on and on.... Doctors Treat Symptoms. NOT Causes . It would be a Fantastic study to see !!! I will note, that in my quest for answers and/or Cures for my conditions, I stumbled upon a a Web study done by a Canadien Doctor who Finally mentions the fact that if your spinal cord is under duress from condition, that the resultant condition will be Chronic Pain and Chronic Anxiety. It only makes complete Common Sense.... Yes, meditation, & other calming techniques can ease your pain because it is calming the CNS & the Vagus Nerve. As an example I told friends and relatives ....... all of whom say, Slow Down, you can hear the tension in your voice.... OK, so I tell them, take your Thumb Stick it Hard into your temple on either side of your head (AAAAAAHHHHH nothing like non stop temporal headaches from neck and occipital muscle tension), Leave it there 24/7 .. I'll call you in a few days and see How Relaxed You are ??? Unless you suffer from these maladies, you just have no idea. Like having a Constant Throbing Tooth Ache that won't go away. Yes, Advil helps numb it for a while, but the CAUSE is not addressed. There are only a few doctors on line that address this.... Dr. Ross is one of them.

We are glad that some of the content we post has resonated with you and helped you better understand what could be at the root cause of your symptoms. Hello Dr. Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia. I've been dealing with a LOT of symptoms during the last year which came out of the blue. First the headaches and stiff neck, then the blurry vision, dizziness, and in the last months, nystagmus, nausea and difficulty swallowing. All my x-rays and neurological exams turned out fine. Although the only possible explanation was myofascial pain syndrome (I do have trigger points), an Orthopedical Manual Physical Therapist recently noticed that I have a slight right rotation in my C2, as well as uneven shoulders and hips and she told me I could have ligament instability. Unfortunately I can't go to the US to get treatment with you guys, but meanwhile my PT is giving me some strengthening exercises for the neck. Could you give me some much needed advice please? Should I go to a chiropractor as well? (There aren't upper cervical chiropractors in Colombia, just regular chiropractors). I'm really having the worst time of my life. Thank you

We understand it is not possible for everyone to travel for medical care, but please keep us in mind if that opportunity comes up in the future. Hopefully, you will find some relief soon. That's great that your PT is helping you with some exercises, but those will not address ligament laxity. Prolotherapy is the ligament treatment. A consultation with a chiropractor may be a good option to at least see if they can offer more insight after doing a thorough physical exam, and hopefully can restore some function and relieve some of your symptoms. Wish you all the best in health!

When I had herniated my disc the first time I had very red purple swollen feet & my daughter's pediatrician told me than my spinal cord was being strangled. He was right! But when I HAD my ACDF I didn't get better I got worse. However the surgeon used too long of screws & drilled them right into my spinal cord. I didn't know I just thought I herniated another disc or something so I kept going back to him but every mri/ ct scan report kept coming back saying that everything was normal. When it was very obvious it wasn't. I mean it was obvious when you pulled up the imaging that my spinal cord was deformed by the screws & the bone graph/cage was also on top of my cord as well. Took almost a year for me to go see another Dr by that time I had 2 other surgeries by him because of course he found other problems looking for the pain in my neck sadly.
I had a revision & am still in terrible pain. I have now joint inflammation as well. I have been diagnosed with SLE. I also just oddly had a Hep C test come back positive & I I've also been told I have the hemachromatosis gene /pre-diabetic too.
My head was bobbing all over like the girl in one of your videos after the revision of my ACDF. No one could figure out why. My pain Dr thought I had a large csf leak & sent me to Mayo (Jacksonville) but wouldn't treat me. They literally stuffed me back into my car. Hurt my neck (I had a neck brace on cause I just had surgery)! This big huge guy just picked me up put me in my car carelessly hitting my head on the roof of my car. Worst experience of my life. They didn't like that another hospital sent me. They called it hospital dumping or something & took it out on me. They were even laughing at me cause my head was bobbing. I have nightmares about that place. I did go to the outpatient a few times which wasn't any better.
I am so glad I came across this channel. I really wish I lived closer. I would be living at your clinic 😔

We know how frustrating it can be to have all the traditional tests come back "normal" which is why we focus on dynamic testing to analyze what is happening in the neck during motion. Glad you are looking into possible structural causes that might explain what is at the root of the issue. We do not have a referral in the UK, and actually treat numerous patients from the UK although we do understand travel is not feasible for everyone, nor can we accept all cases. We hope that an internet search might provide some potential leads. If you feel that you would like our clinical team to review your case in much more detail in the future and possibly see you here, you are always welcome to reach out to us directly. We wish you all the best in your search and obtaining some relief from your symptoms and stabilization of your neck.

However, the center was specifically designed to take on complex neck cases for specialized dynamic testing and comprehensive treatment. In some instances, patients can travel back and forth, but for very severe cases, they may be required to stay in Florida in the beginning of treatment until they are more functionally stable. We would be happy to help you finally get resolution of your pain and all of these associated symptoms that you have been suffering from for so long. I think I now have adjacent segment disease as I am having tingling in both arms, neck pain, and weird neuro symptoms where I will get a hot rush in my upper chest and almost feel like I’m gonna pass out. It’s very scary! Can you do prolotherapy on someone who has already had neck surgery? I am in Florida.

I have developed this over the last couple years and it is difficult to explain to people just what is going on. I can't find a way to get adequately diagnosed , let alone treatment. I am a 52 year old male and it has made being functional and productive very difficult. It also has increased the anxiety levels I experience daily. I so desperately want relief yet can't find it. Any words of help will be greatly Greatly appreciated. Thank you

Dr’s, can prolo also help with cervical stenosis besides instability? One other thing, can this cause eye pressure issues? I’ve never had eye issues. My neck tension lately has been horrible, forward head etc etc.. When I had my eye exam, my eye pressure was slightly elevated. I went back for more testing b.c he thought possible glaucoma. I know how to massage my neck shoulders and did so before that appt. My eye pressure went down, he said when he examined my eyes himself my nerves looked good. When I had to look into some machine, he said he was concerned w/one eye looked like poss early signs of glaucoma. I just don’t believe that b/c of all the eye strain, neck issues I have. I def think it’s coming from my neck and the pulling on those ligaments.
Four years ago my pressure test was slightly elevated, before the next appt for a recheck, I massaged my neck shoulders and when he rechecked everything, everything was ok. So can instability mimick glaucoma, dye pressure changes?
I did have a 3d reconstructive ct scan and it showed my whole bony thorax. You can clearly see that my c2 has shifted

Hi Pro, First, very sorry to hear about your head injury and the long-term effects you've been suffering from. You may want to check out some of our webinars which cover these symptoms in more detail and how the neurology relates to the neck and cervical instability. In our office, we use motion diagnostics like Digital Motion X-ray and transcranial doppler that mimic how a person moves in real-life. From there, a better picture of the case is known and a treatment plan can be developed. Here, we focus on regenerative medicine treatments like Prolotherapy and cervical curve correction to help restore stability to the neck. If you would like our team to review your case in much greater detail and see if you sound like a good candidate for our testing and treatment center, we'd be happy to help. We wish you all the best as you navigate options to resolve your symptoms and get back to your life! Take care.

Hi davedaddy101, Thanks for sharing and glad to hear it helped you connect some of the symptoms you're dealing with. We treat patients who travel from all over the globe, including NYC, although we understand not all patients can travel for care nor can we accept all cases. We would be happy to review your case in detail and see if you sound like a good fit for our center, if that is something you would like to know. You are welcome to reach out to us directly: www.caringmedical.com/neck-patient-candidate-form/ Wish you all the best in getting to the root cause of your symptoms so you can get on with your life. Take care for now.

    • @CaringmedicalProlotherapy
      @CaringmedicalProlotherapy  3 роки тому +2

Hi Professor, Thank you for sharing about your wife and we're sorry to hear about the suffering she's had for the past 5 years. Prolotherapy and the motion testing we do at our neck center is sometimes reimbursed by insurance. However, it is out of pocket at the time of service as clinics like ours are not in-network. What you've experienced is pretty much the standard if you use insurance for all of your medical care. When it comes to chronic pain, they typically offer cortisone, medication to try and manage symptoms, and possibly physical therapy and/or surgery. There are very limited services available for those with upper cervical instability issues, and so most patients do find that they need to go to an out of network specialist in order to have more hope in resolving the issue instead of just managing symptoms. We are glad that you are finding some possible avenues to explore and we wish you all the best in navigating your options. If you feel that you need our help on her case in the future, our clinical team is always happy to review cases in greater detail to help determine if someone sounds like a good fit for our center. Take care.

Had my first eye exam in over a decade. They found that I have optical nerve bulging in both eyes. Well I went down the rabbit hole with google. My symptoms are mild aches around the head. Nothing too painful just annoying. No vision issues. But the bulging has me worried as it’s an indicator of elevated cerebral fluid pressure. I do have an appointment with my primary care tomorrow to work this out. But I came across this video and makes a lot of sense to me. I would say in the last year or so I been staring at computer screens and staring down at my phone more than ever. And maybe a couple weeks ago when I started having some brain fog and headaches it was the start of upper cervical instability. I’m not sure how to get this diagnosed. But I want to know more on how I can start fixing it. Where would I begin?

Hi! We are so glad you found our page! We have a lot of information on our website www.caringmedical.com where you can learn more about healing the vagus nerve and cervical instability. The thing with instability however is that it is degenerative and it will only continue to get worse unless something changes like regeneration! That is where Prolotherapy comes in. Please contact us directly, we’d love to hear more about your case and help you get to the root cause of your problems!

Hi Stacey, Yes, the neck is a superhighway of nerves, and one of the most important is the vagus nerve which innervates multiple organs involving digestion. We have 6+ hours of webinars in our playlist dedicated to discussing the vagus nerve, if you really want to delve into the topic. :) We do see patients with a lot of head pressure and have some over videos on cerebrospinal fluid flow and nerve root compression due to cervical instability that you may want to check out to see if they fit along the lines of what you're dealing with.

I’ve had mid-lower thoracic scoliosis since I was 10. When I was 18, I was rear-ended and after that, my world seemed to stop! People were not listening to me or my symptoms. Dozens of doctors and every test possible. I found out I had whip lash and post-concussion syndrome that eventually led to dysautonomia/POTS and MDDS. Five years later, and I’m still struggling finding proper treatment and doctors who believe me.

I started feeling numbness in my hands feet knees and tingling all over my body… a neurologist that knew I had scoliosis send me to have an MRI looking for a Syringomelia and bingo that was it. After eight years I was diagnosed with Arnold Chiari malformation… Long story after that … hope this helps … I also hope you get a diagnosis with a good outcome right away🤔praying for you ✨🙏🏻✨

Hi James, Sorry to hear about how your neck pain and cervical instability is starting to affect your limbs and causing headaches and dizziness. Glad that you took the step to get professional opinions and take the issue seriously. In our neck center, one of the first things we look at are the vertebrae and the cervical curve while in motion, with Digital Motion X-ray. We find that it gives better information to really see the issues happening in the neck when a person is doing movements that mimic real-life instead of lying flat like in an MRI. Once the areas are identified and the case is thoroughly examined and understood, it is more clear if the person is a Prolotherapy candidate, that is the primary treatment we are known for here. If you would like us to review your case in more detail to see if you sound like a good candidate for our clinics, we would be happy to help. Feel free to reach out to us directly through our website, email, or phone. Wish you all the best in healing!
