1: "Just apply for the job, what's the worst that could happen?"
2: "They could notice me"
They could also request an interview and you embarrass yourself or something.
@@tristunalekzander5608 who cares, just treat it as a meme if you're not ready
I must have seen hundreds of videos trying to answer this same question. The reason why your the only one I’ve subscribed to is because you seem to know where a lot of us is coming from. You answer all the follow up questions I may have, and also address the thought process and emotions I am going through. I feel like you can actually relate to what I’m going through. I feel inspired! This is an amazing video. Thank you!
Thanks man, that means alot.
Exactly, he is definitely my favorite youtuber right now. He answers all the questions ive been searching for
if you've watched hundred of videos regarding whether or not you're ready for the job, i bet you're ready for the job! did you get the job?
The best advise I've gotten is that it is not your job to disqualify yourself, leave that up to the company.
I generally just apply to any positions where I know atleast 3/4th of the stuff in the job description.
Are you employed?
@@rubictricks1853 of course not
Just applied to my first company yesterday! I’ve been making portfolio projects for 4+ months straight along with taking my classes, working and learning 10+ hours every day with no days off, and am skilled in C++, C, html5, CSS, JavaScript, and python, and have experience with C# and assembly language, I am knowledgeable of multiple frameworks Wt, Qt, tensorFlow, and I’m learning VueJS. I really hope that I’ve prepared enough but if I haven’t then I’ll just start again with a stronger foundation this time. Becoming a software engineer is what I want more than anything in the world, and I will achieve that goal by any means!
Hey man, how was it?
@@PwnUrBadCock lol
bro how did it go?
@@osman4816 lol
@@osman4816 crazy story! I created a video game in unity utilizing C#. Learned it all on my own and made all the 3D models, art, code, design, UI and everything from scratch and deployed it to steam. Applied to a lot of places and got quite a few interviews and passed coding interviews with some big companies but couldn’t get past the final interview. I decided to do some freelance making E-commerce websites with ASP.Net Core (which I also learned on my own) while I waited to make some money. A company loved what they saw and offered me 80k for a software engineer position. I moved into my own apartment last Friday which was 14 hours away from home in a beautiful area, and I started work this week! All due to hard work and determination that I would achieve my goal by any means necessary. Good luck in the future and have fun coding! You can do anything you set your mind to.
Super helpful advice! Just graduated this past December and have been applying to as many entry level positions as I can. Even if you get 1000 rejections, it only takes one offer to change your life.
I needed this reminder. I always have this mindset, but it's easy to lose the grip after a while. I'm gonna start applying for jobs soon and this is great!
Wow - under 10k subs only a year ago!! Pretty inspiring, thanks for keeping up the great content, Josh. Hoping for continued success into 2020
Good video! I started applying for jobs just so I can receive the take-home challenges, so I can then measure my skillset. Analysis-paralysis kills!
The worst that they can say is "NO" thats line really motivated me @josh
thank you. I am learning javascript today and I wanted to cry fr fr. and hearing ths makes me want to go even harder. I cannot give up. I have two children that I am doing this for.
This is the video that introduced me to your channel, and it's a year old today! This advice is just as relevant today as it was then - there really is no "right time", and you don't lose anything from applying to jobs you're not *strictly* qualified for. Just get out there, apply like crazy, and prepare to learn 💪 Also, really cool to see how the channel has grown in the past year from just shy of 10k when this came out - keep keeping it real, Josh 🙏
hey, I've been watching you for a while. thank you. you're really a motivating figure and you have inspired thousands of people with this channel. thank you.
You guys make it worth it
Really honest take on things, no fluff, no BS, telling it like it's, good job man.
Love the "just apply advice." Most of the technologies recommended however are for web dev. There's a ton of other software engineering roles other than web dev. Alot of newer self-taught programmers aren't aware that web dev is only a subset of the tech industry.
If you like Arduinos and Raspberry Pis there’s always embedded systems, or because and Android or iOS dev, etc. Point is, I agree.
"Merge my own pull request in the first day"
My man
Hahaha
I've been applying but with no luck and I feel ready. Being ghosted, rejected, and even promised by top companies I've applied to has gotten me to the point of giving up but guess what I haven't because at the end of the day if you have the curiosity, the vision, and the ability to self teach your setting yourself up for something much better.
Update?
Hhmmm how about renew you cv bro
Most definitely needed to hear this.
Important to differentiate web development from software development though, as the latter most often requires a deeper understanding of computer science topics; hence an entire different level of ready as I’m learning in my job search.
extremely inspiring and insightful!
Thanks Joshua, I'm a very perfectionistic person, I was thinking to wait until having 6 projects on my portafolio(I have 4 now), but you are right, there is no reason to not start applying since now. THANKS FOR THE ADVICE
I was thinking about this earlier today, thanks for the upload!
I love this video! You’ve motivated me to begin applying. 8 months in, and I’m about to finally apply heavily. Thanks Josh!
I think the part of your advice I like the most is: be enthusiastic, confident, and persistent! For me: I use the fact that I'm not where I want to be as a motivator for success, and I use the application process to prove to the interviewer and myself that we both will benefit from me working there. I also like to find ways that I can provide value within the interview process.
Top 3 new Coding UA-cam channels! Keep up the good work man! Your videos are super helpful. I've been thinking about starting a YT channel to create videos as I learn ML. What are your suggestions for getting started?
Roni Quinonez In case you don't know there is a channel called siraj Raval Who makes ML videos. they are very well made.
check sentdex Too,also great vídeos ;)
You can never be completely ready for anything in life,
you always have to take the first step, even if you know you aren't ready, you just go in, and give it your best. You learn as you go.
I'm glad I started applying, even to jobs I'm not qualified for. It's making me take everything more seriously because now.
Hey man, I just finished uni and looking for jobs. Thanks for the video its a great help!
Good on you josh
found your channel yesterday, can't believe you only have 10k sub. love your content so much. im in a similar situation as you when you graduated and switch career path, but not as drastic. recent computer engineering graduate trying to get into full stack development. and this is video's title is exactly what im thinking recently. any advice on projects to put on a portfolio? i have some basic apps like to-do list, basic weather app using some api, a blog using rest routes, a user authenticated web application that allow people to post stuff. i feel like these are so basic to be put on a portfolio. do you have any advanced app ideas that i could work on that could be used on a portfolio?
Love the cover letter tip, keep it up bruv.
Bro. You are the reallest programming UA-camr here. Keep up the good work!
This was a genuinely good and motivational video.
This is such a great talk thank you!!!
Thanks for watching!
Good advice hermano! Thanks!
This video deserves so many more views
Love the message Sir. Hooyah
Subbed, thanks for the content you're being great help.
please let us know how to get those wallpapers

Me a backend developer: *Learns React*
That's bad?
@@baltaza lol react is a front end framework and he does backend
@@RealNaisuCinema I know dawg, but he's just expanding knowledge that will take him to a Full Stack Capable Path
This has made laugh a lot, thank you.
Hey josh! Can you make a video of other programming jobs to work for(or close to programming as possible), while building your portfolio in the mean time? 3:15
Currently going on 3 months teaching my self full mern stack from scratch, but getting discouraged because of time and my current job having nothing to do with what i recently graduated in (CS degree). Thanks! this video is keeping me going!
thanks man been suffering with this thing and worrying if i'm good enough to apply for any jobs because i'm still studying in college and in my final year now.
what would you recon i do, just apply right...
Such amazing videos, thank you so much! I just got my junior job and A LOT of your content helped me through this, I am at the point where I feel like the "imposter" but who cares I want to learn! Thanks man!
I'm trying to go the self taught route, but when I checked the job requirements on glassdoor it said that I MUST HaVeeeE!!!!! A DEGREE in computer science or related fields and must have some bullshit amount of experience etc. What can I do if every job description is like that. Should I trash the self taught developer and go college or is there an alternative. I mean HOW will one be able start his career if every freaking company wants these absurd amount of requirements. Think of us like robots.
Those "must haves" are always bs. In reality they dont care if you have a masters in CS. As long as you've got the basics down and a decent portfolio you're good.
Hey Joshua,
Very valuable and nice video!
Thanks!
Man, I cant believe I didnt find your channel earlier. Stoked to be a new subscriber, thanks for all the videos!
Glad to have you!
Work years is a ridonkeleys measurement, im working as electrician in small company we do everything electric/data/antenna, once a dude came in our company, had 10 years experience, but he had no clue how to build all this stuff, other came whit 3 years, he was bragging i can do EVERYTHING, i were hes mentor and he figured out he doesnt know anything, once even prevented him making life threatening mistake, after that a dude came less than 1 year exp, i were hes mentor asked a bit what he know, knew only basics, told him its no problem if your willing to learn, he became great electrician now been in company 3 years.
Your awesome bro!!!
Thank you very much, this video is exactly what i needed !
I keep seeing in jobs for entry level like outrageous amount of experience and years required. Do they do that on purpose to deter people?
There is a disconnect between HR and the CTO's request most likely.
Whoever wrote the requirements doesn't know what they're talking about. Honestly, a single year of focused experience is enough to master nearly any language or framework. It's embarrassing to see 5 or even just 3 years of experience required on something like React. If it takes someone 3 years to master React, they shouldn't be a programmer.
Very well said. Inspired me!
Get out there and apply.
Thanks Josh!
Thanks for making this video man! Really helps
Great advice 👍🏾
This is my favourite channel 😍
Awesome video bro!
Great stuff, thanks Josh!
Thanks for this great video, i'm right now doing as you said, applying to every company, i hope to get an interview
omg Thank you so much for this video!! i will start applying soon and i am terrified (i have the last assessment tomorrow and next the capstone project )! all that goes through my mind these days is: i am still not prepared enough, i need at least 3 more months of practice , need more practice with node and algorithms and javascript and everything! i know postgres but wait: need to get a book on mongo 'cause what if they're gonna ask me abt this, who's gonna hire me with no experience, and wait! i'm afraid of phone interviews!...i know ...dumb..and so on and so on.... but you're right: what's the worst that's gonna happen... say "no"? :P :) they can't fire me :D :D :D :D :D
Good Job
My parents kind of disowned me and I am looking for a IT job but i was unsure until I saw your video. Thanks
Thanks for these videos man it really helps!!
A good piece of info would be where exactly you're looking for job openings? Like, you said just click the button to apply... which sites are you looking on for job postings?
Also, another great piece of info would be, what should my resume look like exactly?
Thank you for the inspiration, you got a new sub!👍
Great advice
Saving this for next year when I'll be sitting in placement interviews! xD
beautiful !!
saw the witcher signs and i instantly subbed
good advice
They grow up so fast
I liked his little cloud metaphor , “you’re ready!!!” , like no that doesn’t happen
Thank you
Clouds open up some god comes down and says apply! Lol I loved that haha 🤣😂👍🏻👊🏻👊🏻
Should you try applying before having internships?
Yes
Josh I need your help. Everyone makes content about getting your first developer job, becoming a jr dev, no experience. I want to know what to do after that. What about your second job? How do I find a good job if I already have experience
You are getting better with your videos man! Great work! Please consider doing some basic tutorials for n00bs, little JS or React apps. Thanks!
they're on my list!
almost 10 k subs:)
Hey Josh, what's that tune playing at the end of your video, I'd like to use it for a presentation I'm doing.
Thx
hey where can i get that animated witcher background
Wallpaper engine off of steam.
I find it hard to believe that if someone doesn't know SQL then the company will hire them.
This video was lowkey funny as hell😂
Hey joshua, can you please talk about deno vs node
Hey Im going to. Do. My first interview with a start up through angellist company any idea what to expect?
Read their technologies and be prepared to say you want to work in a fast paced environment and have loads of ownership.
Joshua Fluke thanks I had no clue what to say or research but this gave me a better understanding of what to look for
Joshua Fluke well I had the interview today that I told you about two days ago and the only reason why I got the interview was because couple of months ago I made my first IOS app with xcode it was a check list app real simple but that's the reason why I got the interview I'm not sure if I got the job until next week.
Did you get the job?
@@ItzMute did you get that job)?
I spent the last month learning c++... was that a bad idea?
Nice
how did u get the backgrounds :D
I HAvE SUBscribed to you Your are awesome.
You’re hella wise.
You apply to your first job as asap before you even learn to code. Most job interviews are about your ability to lie to get the job.
Would it be reasonable to say. That you would need. HTML css JS and one JS framework.
Tell me why...
Ain't nothing but a heartache
Are the languages you mentioned still one of the most used by companies?
Depends where you live, look at the local job website and if you see like a hundred jobs in idk php, well you better learn php. Then apply to all of them :)
Great content as usual ! Subscribed !
What is your opinion on unpaid internships?
Click the button and apply anyways!!!
I’m going to do it! Wish me good luck!
Do it
Could I learn Java instead of python for the backend or do you recommend using python? The reason I ask is because I have some experience with Java and none with python. Thanks in advance.
Twotex187 Python is way easier than Java. Once you’ve a intermediate level in Java, you could start learning Python.
Java is similar to Python to the extent that they both have imperative/procedural elements like conditionals, loops, and procedures/functions.
Do you think I should apply?
Do I need to have a University or College degree, diploma or certificate to get hired by a software company as a software engineer or developer? or are they more interested in what you can actually do?
The second part of what you said is spot on!
Awesome video, love it! I'm taking online bootcamps, researching indeed, & looking for suggestions on which paths is best to getting that "first" job, web development, python, etc? Thanks

What do you even put on a cover letter
