    I have been driving my Acura CL type S for eleven years as a daily driver. I have 337000 miles on it. I did have to replace the transmission four years ago. It has plenty of power when I need it. It is comfortable and with the updated Bluetooth player sournd sound it is a great ride for my trips. Black on black.

      I've got an '03 S 213k on its 2nd recall tranny(at least). Except 1-2 being uneven it shifts pretty tight but know the inevitable will come. It's said the '07 Accord 5 sod auto is night & day better? I've heard it's almost bulletproof & a permanent fix too. Shameful how they handled the recalls, records say last on mine was in '09 & instead of using the Accord's as a permanent fix STILL used remans of the original faulty design. Many failed too. Shocker!

    I bought one brand new 7/2000 and drove it for 250,000 miles over 10 years.
    Never had to replace the transmission but I paid very close attention to it and over serviced it.
    Aside from changing CV shaft seals often I never had any mechanical failures or other leaks.
    Worst things to happen for me was my rear view mirror leaked chromatic fluid onto the shifter and ate the plastic up.
    My 6 disc changer jammed up. It was a surprisingly good car.

      Switching an auto CL-S to manual is a beyond major headache according to most. Even if you set donor right next to yours. No matter how much you love your CL, I've gathered you're better staying auto or locate a 6-spd car. Not only is ECU different(the 6-spd loses VSA), but the back subframe supports it is too.
      My dad found a red/ebony 6-spd fully documented service(owner an Acura tech) he loves it. While I'm stuck w/my red on tan auto. Go figure!
      Every car I've owned since '85(including an 88 Legend Coupe!) was stick. The CL-S much as I like it reminds me why! I've not driven my dad's yet, but if anything like the Legend can only imagine how much more responsive it is. Back in the day test drove new Legend autos they were de-balled slugs vs the stick I eventually got. The CL-S auto already really scoots.

    I would say some weird transmission behavior is linked more toward the programming. The real signs of the transmission going out in these older Hondas is transmission whine. Which comes from bearings that wear out over time. The 07-08 TL’s and Accords got an updated version of the transmission that fixed some of those issues.

    I’ve owned 2. The first was identical to this one. I bought it with 150,000 miles and it was on its 3rd transmission. The 2nd gear wasn’t lubricated well enough which caused a class action lawsuit against Honda. Honda fixed the problem by drilling a hole in the case and installing a fluid squirter to keep the 2nd gear from exploding. They also extended the warranty till 100,000 miles. Mine ran like a new car. My second was a white 2001 type s I bought with 223,000 for $700. The previous owner installed headers and removed the cats. He also had the ecu reprogrammed….Needless to say, it absolutely screamed. 0-60 was just a bit over 5 seconds and it would chirp the tires in every gear change except 4-5. The car wouldn’t idle when I bought it and that’s why it was so cheap. A $5 MAF sensor from the junkyard fixed the issue. I wish I hadn’t sold it. I currently own a SC400… it’s a sexy car. RWD, V8… but the interior quality just isn’t as good as an Acura from that era. Brittle plastics and rattling is the norm whereas the Acura interiors last forever and everything has a feeling quality to it. Like the center cup holders for example… the lid on the Lexus just flips up and feels like a $5 part. The lid on the Acura is opened by pushing a button. That button is connected to precision cut gears that slowly open the lid in the same way as a half million dollar Rolls Royce. If the Acura was RWD I would have kept it forever.

    • @katmanluke7187
      @katmanluke7187 Рік тому

      That 2nd gear fluid kit was ,just a temp fix by Honda dodging the inevitable to save $$$. Like the rest records say mine got that & failed right after. It's had 2 recall reman trannies since(at least!)
      It was all very poorly handled by Acura & did turn many owners off for good. They kept putting in remans of the original flawed design(as they did on mine at 89k in '09), when from '06/'07 on they could've used Accord trannies as they should've done from the start & permanently solved the fiasco.
      That's interesting about Lexus interiors lack of Q., I figured they'd be just as good or better than Acuras.

    • @skipast75
      @skipast75 Рік тому +1

      Not just interiors. The “over-engineered and robust” door hinges that everyone talks about are anything but. Drivers doors all sag and eventually catch the front fender and chip the paint. The doors weigh twice that of any car I’ve owned. Power steering racks leak. Power steering hose leaks onto the expensive alternator. Fuel pump ECMs die. Gauge cluster lights burn out and soldering joints crack so you need to slap the dashboard on most SCs for your Speedo to work. Heat/Ac dash units screens go blank.
      But… the parts that count are built to last. Bought mine with 222k in 2018 it still had the original plugs, plug wires, caps and rotors.. and it ran great. Which is nuts because it gets so hot under the hood that the hood burns you if you touch it after a short drive. Everything mechanical on my car is original except the plugs/wires/caps/air intake. Tires and coilovers are new too.
      1UZ is a masterpiece. FAA certified for airplanes. 6 bolt mains. Oversquare stroke. 92-95 use thiiick piston rods. Toyota designed the heads to not breathe well and locked the ECM on purpose so the engine couldn’t ever be stressed. And it sounds amazing.

Ater that it sat in pristine condition in thrir garage. It's color is midnight black and I added a gold flake lower trim and rear wing spoiler. As well as a custom-made hood scoop shaped like an acura "A" logo and limo tint all around. Everyone keeps trying to chase me down and buy it. Ain't happening😂😅. 132k I removed the transmission and with alldata and youtube Purchased an overhaul kit for $400 bucks and did a great job (I only attempted it because I have more tools at home than the average person for my trade). Also added a removable backboard with not one but two 15 inch rockford falsgate P3s and amp. I see the gleem in my grandkids' eyes, they can keep on gleeming. They're gonna bury me reclined in this one with my tunes blasting from six feet under powered by a solar panel on my tombstone.😂

      Only way to truly & permanently resolve the tranny issues isn't reman the design flawed originals(no matter how good the shop is), it's replace w/the '07 Accord version they should've come with in the first place.
      Like the NSX, their autos at the time could not handle the power those V-6's were dishing out. Even detuned to 250 hp the NSX would chew up the autos.
      IMO, the '01 & '02 nose looks so much better than the '03 w/those fake inlets replacing the lights. My '03 had some minor nose damage that busted 1 of the headlights,, so finding a '01 parts car I swapped in not just the clear headlights but those bumper lights too. To me it looks so much better. I only had to wire them into the corner driving lights circuit.

    Some of these things had 2-3 transmissions replaced by the time they reached 100k miles. It's a real shame because these and the TL's from the same generation were such great cars otherwise.

    These are STUPID HOT in the Honda scene, mainly because the manual trans that came with these are a direct bolt-in for a 6th gen V6 Accord ... which never came in a manual, and had a super unreliable auto transmission.

    • @Icejay932

      The 6th gen did have a manual I believe but it didn’t come with the LSD and higher gear ratio that the CL trans had

    You did it wrong for the seat. The seat will move back to the position if you do not close the door before pulling the seat back to the upright position.

      i have an 03 TL type S and its amazing.. i love it.. i got it with 122k and now its got like 144k.. i absolutely love this car.. i daily it and drive my sports car on the weekends.. but its super comfortable and thre power is so nice.. these cars a hidden gems.. like no one ever talks about them. aside from the trans issues, theres not a better used car out there... i tell ppl all the time dont look at the mileage, cuz ive seen these go 3/400k on the odometer.. Honda got this era of Acura right

      @@johncollins9989 I absolutely adored this car. It was still quick for the age of the one I had. Owed it for 5 years before someone rear ended me. I foound the part for it and pieced it together. And drove it for another year. Then gave it to a family member to used for 1.5 years before power steering went out at 325k. The subframe rust issue was too bad and expensive to fix..

    I can’t respect a kid whose reviewing a car that’s older than him. They should find somebody that was in their 20s when this car came out so they can show the true respect this car deserves. This was a street dominating motherfucker in 2001 if your parents let you take it, it was faster than a GT Ford Mustang I’m it’s its time . nobody walked around with a gallon water bottle either you’re comparing 24 year-old history. A lot of changes have been made.

    The review is ok, but I feel like the reviewer was reviewing this car with a 2022 lens. Back then the materials used in the interior was A+.
    & with these reviews about V6 equipped Honda/Acura vehicles are a bit misleading. Hundreds of reviews keep saying how the company keeps using the J-series engine. Yet leave out how the J-series has been consistently updated since it’s inception. As a matter of fact, the new turbocharged 3.0L V6 Acura produces is pretty much 87% J-series engine with Dual Overhead Cams.
    Now enough of my rant, I love this channel.

    The automatic transmissions in these are garbage. Everyone who had these had blown several. I had this exact car and the second gear clutch package and solenoid was defective from the factory so all the warranty units all failed too. Fun car to drive but a nightmare to own.

      It is June 2024 and I bought an Acura CL S-Type in 2003....it is a 2001 model...it has 69,000 original miles on it. Love the car. Great for trips...looks new. It's also red. A real head turner. I'm in East Tennessee.
