  • Mikegyver.com DIY: Hack upgrade (even teardown) your Apple TV 4k 3rd gen to run from 12vdc power.
    This 3rd Gen Apple TV is smaller and almost the same size as the first Gen Apple TV. See what we found!
    While at it, we converted it to run from 5v to 12vdc; it is more efficient than using inverters.

    I just pulled my Gen 3 apart and on the back side of the power supply (the cover you didn’t take off the back) and it clearly says “Output 4.3v, 1.21a” so it looks like you don’t need the higher amps you mention. My Apple TV has 128GB with Ethernet.

      That is correct. We tested up to exactly when the PSU will cut out. Apple often times over engineer the power (amps), but in reality, the extra amps is rarely used.

      @@mikegyverComputer it’s nice to know what they expect to use as power as there are other power supply units that could be used if you only actually need a couple of amps. I really appreciate the videos you guys put out. Thank you!

    Would have been nice to take out the board and have a look at the cooling -- I can see a heat sink layer behind the board.

    Hi are you going to do a usb c video to power Apple TV?

  •  Рік тому +1

    I wonder why they haven‘t just used USB-C. I guess it‘s for efficiency reasons.

      Old version use usb c

    • @kansein9294
      @kansein9294 Рік тому

      They removed because they don't want people to hack their apple tv

    •  Рік тому

      @@kansein9294 if that‘s the only port, sure they could just use a OTG splitter, but they could make it USB-C 2.0 (USB-C electrically can work both on 2.0, 3.x and 4.x). I guess they just wanted to avoid power supplies.

    Hi! What’s the ram size of 64gb and 128gb? Thank you.

      Should be 4GB for the 2022 variant.

    Not sure I follow the point of all this. How much energy does this little box really use? It's nice to see inside the box but really? Had trouble following what you were trying to achieve here. My focus is for use of the box to improve the HDMI quality and approve the power supply to reduce noise issues for audio purposes. It's a great streaming device but the upgrades to improve the Quality are worthy of much attention. Overall it's a fairly cheap box for all of does.

    • @mikegyverComputer
      @mikegyverComputer  Рік тому

      Just curious since you are into noise reduction, what is the noise and power level draw when using this in a DC environment, when using an inverter in car/RV (DC to AC to DC)?

    So it's possible to just use a USB power supply and a USB to DC cable to power the unit? Only .8v difference.

      @mikegyverComputer  Рік тому

      No, USB-A is typically 5v. The latest Apple TV is 3.40vdc. You'll still need to down convert.

      Yes, but because of the set power levels with the USB-C standards, we'll need another board to further convert it down to 3.40vdc. This is actually a good topic for our next video idea. Please stay tuned.

      Im Auto hat man nur 12V, wodurch man einen Spannungswandler braucht, um den Apple TV zu betreiben. So kann man ihn auch direkt durch 12V betreiben, wodurch sich ein grosser Spannungswandler vermeiden lässt und man eine längere Akkulaufzeit auf der Batterie hat.

    •  Рік тому

      @Jdj Xhh *120 or 230V AC.
      You are basically stepping up the voltage to 120V AC to step it down to 4V DC, while you could also directly step it down to 4V DC from 12V DC.
