- We install a limited slip differential (LSD) from BR-Z, FR-S, GT86 into a Lexus IS250. This is a direct bolt on of a 4.1 ratio differential in place of the 3.9 stock non-LSD.
Check out my previous videos on cleaning and resealing the differential.

Thanks for the video. I've got a Y38 out of a 2022 GT86 with only 875 miles on it I bought a year ago and still need to install in my IS250. Your video is very helpful to those of us facing this challenge.
One note - you don't need LSD additives or lubes that contain them for this differential. LSD additive is designed to provide an appropriate coefficient of friction for LSDs that use plate-and-clutch style mechanisms. The Y38 uses a Torsen helical-gear design to which LSD additives are not relevant. My research indicated Redline 75-85w lubricant is optimal for this unit. The LSD style fluid will not harm your differential, but if the LSD action is not to your liking consider replacing it with a quality non-LSD fluid such as the Redline.
The factory recommendation for GT86/BRZ differentials from the manual reads "Differential Gear Oil LX" or "Other gear oil that meets API GL-5 SAE 75W-85 or GL-5 SAE 75W90 specifications". No mention of selecting a lube containing a LSD additive when deviating from the factory LX fluid, which is 75-85W.
Thanks again for documenting your work, and I look forward to your axle rebuild video. I hope not to damage my boots but they do have ~128,000 miles on them and are 15 years old, so I'd probably be smart to replace them anyway.
Methodical and to the point. Your explanations are always clear and concise. Thanks for sharing!
always knew the y38 fit in the first gen didn't know it worked for these too
Yea. It also fits the 3rd gen 250. Though the ratio is high. 2IS is 3.9 like first gen. But 3IS is 3.7 so those rpm’s will be high on highway.
👍🏼 nice job, been following your projects for awhile and always learn something new!
thanks for doing this much awaited video! i know i bothered you in another video about it but im glad you got around to it and it all helps us out!
Check out latest video on OBD scanner 😉 might be worth your while.
Awesome tutorial and nice upgrade!
Nice DIY video. Can’t wait to swap out my OEM diff for a BRZ on my 6speed manual IS250. 🤙🏽
Thanks for the share 👍🏼 I'll be grabbing those materials you used for prep/paint
Fantastic video. Thanks so much for your work
Whoa didn’t know you can do this! Crazy!
I def wanna pickup another is soon :( I love seeing so many mods people are doin on the platform still
It’s affordable now and aftermarket support is great for the platform.
Tnks for all the tips should make my life a little bit easier when I changed my diff fluid on my 2008 IS 350.
Great video about the installation!! Seeing not a spec of rust and how clean the diff mount bolts were shocking too!! How the axles fought you for a few hours when the car is already that clean, a high mileage warrior from a state that uses salt would guarantee use of a torch, swearing and make this take up a day and night getting the bolts loose
Check out latest video on OBD scanner 😉 might be worth your while.
I always thought it would mess up the transmission I want the 2IS 4.03 on my 3IS
I put a 2012 diff in my 08 isf. Definitely a pain in the ass I had ripped the boot as well 😅 well worth doing the torson upgrade night and day difference
2012 Diff from another isf or a Brz?
I just did this swap on my is300 on jacks, it was a pain in the ass, took me 6 hours. yea forsure you gotta take off the axels first before everything else.
Is300 is easy with the bolt on axle stub. That subframe clearance is a pain.
@@TunerwithKids I took off the rear sway bar, it helped alot, yes you are right.
Love the video. As always informative and straight to the point. You even have me considering a 2nd gen IS now. I wonder if they bolt up to the 3rd gen IS. 🤔
The third gen 250 uses a Y32 differential which looks similar but the mounting ears are slightly different. I haven’t heard of anyone doing the swap.
I just searched clublexus and some has done the swap on a 14-16 IS250!! www.clublexus.com/forums/is-3rd-gen-2014-present/793216-tried-and-true-frs-torsen-diff-on-14-15-is250.html
@@TunerwithKids that's awesome 💯.
Hello, what's your feedback on the Y38?
How high are your RPMs on the highway with that diff? I want to do the same with my is250
How does it feel compared to before?
This was a good tutorial, would any year of Y38 work in a 250?
Any year.
The 1G IS Torsen LSD doesn't require special gear oil with friction modifiers and uses reg gear oil. Wouldn't that be the case here as well?
Toyota says LX for all their LSD diffs. That’s the $80/quart stuff. Regular diffs call for LT which is still $50/quart. Screw all that, $18/quart Valvoline is good for me.
great
Does it also fit 2is is350?
My Euro 2008 is250 has Y55 differential, does anyone knows the difference between the Y50 and the Y55?
good video! in relations of removing the drive side axle, couldnt you have used a long extension and tap it out it from the other end of the rear diff?
if you do a rear diff swap on the 1st gen is300, its best just to drop the rear sub frame haha. its much easier that way.
There is a bar blocking the hole thru. The axle stubs on the 1st gen make it much easier. But the lack of access for the Allen bolts is the pain on the is300.
What is the difference between stock Differential and the upgrade Y38 BR Differential driving experience feel like
Quicker low end acceleration due to 4.1 ratio vs 3.9 stock. LSD for corners and grip.
hey man nice video, will this work on 3rd gen 250 ? and what are the pros and cons ?
I’m not sure on the 3IS. I haven’t seen anyone do it. I think it may, there may be a comment here or I saw it on Clublexus.
Just saw on FB in one of the IS groups that this works on the 3rd gen 250
@@ItsBKsama sweeett
I felt your pain while watching you trying to pop out the axle then popping the boot.
Yea I should have ordered that puller when I saw the guys on Clublexus do it. Didn’t expect it to be so hard clipped. Used to pulling FWD axles and prying off the transmission.
is this bolt on for the 2is350 as well?
No IS350 uses different differential and mounting points. Only option is an aftermarket differential replacement using existing carrier and pinion.
Can the y38 come out of a manual and go to an auto is250??
All y38 is same
How long did it take you to replace it?
Took me days but I’m filming and explaining. Hardest part is removing axles from diff. But I show the tools and methods needed to do it. Also had to order tools and fix my axle CV boot. If I had to do again, this would be a 3 hr job on the ground.
What size are the three bolts on the back of the differential
M10 Allen.
I have a 10.0 but it seems like it's too small
12mm Hex
Is the y38 from an automatic or manual Frs/brz?? Thanks
Same for both.
@@TunerwithKidswhat’s about 07 is250 AWD??
Does that mean the Y38 should fit the iS-F aswell ?🧐🧐🧐
Nope. Only is250. 350 and ISF have different mounting points.
Are you planning on doing burnouts?
Tires are expensive
