Khalid couldn't sleep because the curse included the line, "I will take from you your dreams" Here, 'dreams' indicated sleep - the curse's power stole his sleep!
SPOILERS! I don't necessarily like Tariq but I understand why he thinks the way he does. He doesn't know that there is a curse, to him Khalid is still a murderer who now has the girl he loves. He obviously won't be happy about it and will try to get Shazi back. So I feel like we should just be a little nicer to him, considering Shazi had the exact same mind-set as he does now except Tariq can't fall in love with Khalid and he still doesn't know about the curse
I absolutely ADORED this book. The writing style was so beautiful. And just the plot and the story line was so intriguing. I loved all of the characters. Well most. I loved Tariq at first but then he was just coming off as arrogant. I am actually a little scared because of Shazi's dad.(spoiler) I fear that he is going to make the curse worse. I just fear that he curses someone else by accident or something. Or that he kills someone.*cough**cough* Khalid. Overall i absolutely loved this book.
I love the 1001 nights, so i really want to read this. not to mention its BEAUTIFUL!! i'm seriously seeing this book everywhere and it's driving me crazy that i haven't read it yet!
I don't think there will be a love triangle - Shazi makes it very clear in her narrative that she doesn't love Tariq anymore, and it would make so little sense for her to suddenly go back to liking him in the next book.
I read TW&TD recently and I'm obsessed with it. The writing just flows perfectly and is easy to read, the characters were mostly all lovely and amazing except for Shazi's dad, like I don't know what the hell is he trying to do but it doesn't sound good. I initially liked Tariq but then he started acting heedlessly and selfishly that it irritated me. I hope he doesn't turn into a complete asshole in the second book.
it took me a while to figure out that by you stating 'kaylif' you meant caliph- pronouced khaaleef. but it's just my inner arabness talking :') great review btw!
*GASP* SOPHIA YOU HAVEN'T READ ACOTAR YET??? SOPHIA YOU HAVE TO DIVE INTO IT SOON!!!! I'M SO EXCITED TO READ THE WRATH OF THE DAWN NOW, I HOPE I CAN READ IT SOON!! (:
I think he can't sleep because it's part of the curse. I believe it said something like he can't dream or something tho I have no idea if that's what it actually means. And Tariq reminded me of Tamlin from ACOTR with his protectiveness. And I hate him. Lol
Been seeing this book around A LOT lately and what's making me excited is that I'm arabic and muslim and I'd love to know how does the weiter represent these stuff and make a theme out of it. Hopefully I'll read this soon!
I really enjoyed this book. It was really good. I'm finally reading the second book. It was shocking to read that there was a curse that was put on Khalid. He didn't have a choice but is forced to. I enjoyed reading about how the stories Shazi told Khalid stopped him from murdering her. It was very cute how at first Khalid didn't like Shazi but then later on broke him, and he fell in love with her. I'm also a fan of hate and love relationships where they will be a couple. It's so great. 😁
I am obsessed with book!!! I agree with you about the inconsistencies but hey it's the first book. Hopefully, unanswered questions will be taken care of. I had the mistake of reading the excerpt of the 2nd book oh my goodness :)) what? the plot thickens
WARNING. MY COMMENT CONTAINS SPOILERS. I would hate for you to be spoiled so don't read it if you haven't read the book. I think the reason he can't sleep has to do with the curse. If he doesn't keep killing girls he stops being able to sleep -- that's why he hasn't slept since he met her. Also, totally agree with you on the boring parts, I was kinda like -_- every time they left the palace. The love triangle thing reminds me of the selection and twilight... Who roots for the other guy? Like no one. LOL So glad you enjoyed the book, I'm glad it's a duology as well, would hate for the plot line to be ruined from being dragged out too long.
Ok I finished reading this book two days ago and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I didn't think I was going to enjoy it as much as I did because of all of the hype. I really like Shazi, she was really cleaver the way she formulated evey word that came out of her mouth. I think that Khalid and Shazi really complement each other because both have a very strong presence when they are in the room are incredibly cunning. Additionally, I also didn't really care for Tariq, I kinda made jokes about him while I was reading. I loved Jalal, he was hilarious. I can't wait for the sequel!
I totally loved this book!!! I gave it 5 stars but after hearing this review I can understand why Sophia gave it a 4. I literally loved both Shazi and Khalid. Shalid...Khazi... I don't know which of those two ship names I like most!
I totally agree with you! I got a winners curse vibe with this even though it's in a different setting! Love that book(winners curse) and I really liked this book:)
I didn't know about the glossary in the back so I didn't know exactly what all of those things meant. I could make out some things because of the context and since I'm moroccan I also knew some words but not all of those so if I knew beforehand there was a glossary that would be really helpful! xD
LMAO I laughed when you just sang the WOWP theme song, I was like YASSSS! And if you loved W&D, ACOTAR is something you really need to get into. Also Kiss of Deception!
Totally agree! I don't want to see this becoming yet another love triangle. Tariq is interesting as just an "obstacle" nothing more. And I really really hope this doesn't become a triology!
just to answer your question I may be totally wrong but what I got from reading the book is that Kahlid can't sleep due to the curse and its part of the curse. But I may be wrong
I was talking with a friend of Marie's at a writing workshop I attended, and asked her if she knew anything about the Winner's Kiss. She did, but she said all she could tell me was that Marie is going to make her characters suffer!!!!! And I kind of just wanted to cry :(
I FINALLY READ THIS BOOK!!! It's raining a crapton outside so I was banned from leaving the house and so I stayed in and read The Wrath and The Dawn and now I'm replying to this extremely late because my heart says yes although my rationale says no. Personally I found that Shahrzad's weak will made the book go from a five star to a four star automatically. I absolutely despise when characters that are made to be strong are brought down so simply, especially without reason. There was no reason for her to fall so easily and truth be told I was hoping for a little more of that venomous sass that she holds to be towards Khalid. I just really wanted Shahrzad to be as headstrong as she was created to be and seeing as how long it took for the story to progress into a true romance, I think Ahdieh could have given her more time to fall dangerously in love. I wanted it really, really bad. That being said that was the bulk of my issue so after getting 1/2-3/4 of the way through the book I was somewhat over it and engrossed in the world that Ahdieh had written. I also really liked Despina and Jahlal but who didn't like them honestly. As for Tariq...I didn't hate him until he persisted to remove Shahrzad from Khalid after countless times of mentioning that he believed her to be a willful girl who knew what she was doing. Even after seeing them together in peace he forced delusion onto himself and that is what makes his character unlikable. Had he just been as he was at the beginning perhaps he wouldn't have been gross. To be fair though, he only knows Kahlid as the monstrous tyrant king that kills virgins.
hahaha four years later but I just read this book last year !! I just wanted to say I'm glad you seemed to enjoy the book but I'm upset that almost all the comments about the book here were negative :'( I personally really felt for Tariq and thought his personality was good because he is different. I think his attachment to Shazi and to the other characters was very nice and the flaws he has Were frustrating but also I think it's important that some characters be irrational in books at times because there is people like that irl. Also Jahandar's parts were very important, especially for the sequel. I completely agreed about Shazi giving in so quickly though and see why it would be frustrating that Khalid kept his secret to the end but I still would not change anything in the book :') thank you for making this video though !! (ps my husband just said "are you sure you want to do this ? (comment) you're on your period." so yes that might be the reason for this super long comment but also because I love this book aaaaaaaaa
i just finished tw&td and i have the same feelings for vikram like why tariq shame on you for killing my spirit animal. and i managed to finish the book in four days because it was too good. love this review. :)
I have a theory for the next book! My theory is that we're going to find out Shazi experienced Stockholm syndrome. That would totally explain why she let her guard down so easily and how Tariq thought her demeanor was so changed from when she went to the palace.
your thoughts on this book completely summed up my own! all of your feels about this book mirror my own .. except for one thing. throughout the majority of the book, i could not stand Shazi's character. while i liked her boldness and strength, what pissed me off the most about her was her arrogance and her flip flopping feelings. at one point she was all "i need to kill this monster" and by the next page she wanted to kiss him. and the arrogance she had was too much for me. AND like when she tried to fool Khalid into telling her his secrets by using guilt against him, all the while keeping secrets from him herself. they just kept hurting each other for seemingly childish things time and time again. i just wish she would have used compassion and selflessness to make him trust her rather than hurting him over and over. that's really my only complaint about this book :$
Shahrzad is actually pronouced shuh-re-zad and Khalid is pronounced with a kh sound not a c or k sound and is more like khe-lid. He should try sitting in an 8am lecture. That'll cure that! 😂
SPOILERS!
I don't necessarily like Tariq but I understand why he thinks the way he does. He doesn't know that there is a curse, to him Khalid is still a murderer who now has the girl he loves. i'm seriously seeing this book everywhere and it's driving me crazy that i haven't read it yet!
Same, omg! But I heard that his name was changed to Khalid in this book and it really annoyed me, as I liked the original name better.
ohh really? thanks for letting me know otherwise i would probably be hella confused going into it. but i also like Khalid, its a nice name :)
LilyLexicon i hope you can read it soon!! i'm happy to hear you're a fan of one thousand and one nights, but just fyi, it's only semi-based on it!
I totally agree. I was bored when I read the tariq and jahandar chapter I just wanted to hear from shahrzad. still a great book!
I don't think there will be a love triangle - Shazi makes it very clear in her narrative that she doesn't love Tariq anymore, and it would make so little sense for her to suddenly go back to liking him in the next book.
It is truth

SOPHIA YOU HAVEN'T READ ACOTAR YET??? SOPHIA YOU HAVE TO DIVE INTO IT SOON!!!!
I'M SO EXCITED TO READ THE WRATH OF THE DAWN NOW, I HOPE I CAN READ IT SOON!! (:
LovingDemBooks I HOPE YOU CAN READ IT SOON, TOO, GRACE! AND omg acotar i need to read that asap.
I think he can't sleep because it's part of the curse. I believe it said something like he can't dream or something tho I have no idea if that's what it actually means. And Tariq reminded me of Tamlin from ACOTR with his protectiveness. And I hate him. Lol
Rayna Skiver I think the reason why Khalid can't sleep is because he has to be awake the whole night till dawn so he can murder his wife.
THE ENDING MADE MY HEART SAD NO I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE
***** IT'S OKAY WE CAN GET THROUGH IT TOGETHER THINGS WILL BE OKAY MAYBE PROBABLY IDK
Been seeing this book around A LOT lately and what's making me excited is that I'm arabic and muslim and I'd love to know how does the weiter represent these stuff and make a theme out of it. Hopefully I'll read this soon!

princessroyalblue do you mean the little snippet at the end of this book or a different excerpt entirely? I NEED TO KNOW
lol! the one at the end of the book. YUP! oh the wait~~ seriously!
WARNING. MY COMMENT CONTAINS SPOILERS.
I would hate for you to be spoiled so don't read it if you haven't read the book.

xxVampElixx i loved hearing your thoughts!! i agree--i think khalid and shazi complement each other well!
I totally loved this book!!! I gave it 5 stars but after hearing this review I can understand why Sophia gave it a 4. I literally loved both Shazi and Khalid. Shalid...Khazi... I don't know which of those two ship names I like most!
AwkwardyetAwesome I like Khazi. It sounds better. 😁
Omg yes, I thought it was a bit similar to The Winner's Curse !!! But both are great in different ways
I totally agree with you! I got a winners curse vibe with this even though it's in a different setting! Love that book(winners curse) and I really liked this book:)
YOU NEEEEED TO READ ACOTAR OMG. I really wanna read this book and I have it ordered so hopefully I get it soon!!!!
Omg I just finished reading this book 10 - 20 mins ago and loved it! Thanks for the spoiler section. I agree with mostly everything you said!
I didn't know about the glossary in the back so I didn't know exactly what all of those things meant. I could make out some things because of the context and since I'm moroccan I also knew some words but not all of those so if I knew beforehand there was a glossary that would be really helpful! xD
I initially thought you said she had magic dormant in her butt 😂And yeah I'm also totally desensitised by all these separated couples in YA series.
Jellafy LOL yep all that magic stored in her butt!! :-D

I loved this book so much! Shazi was probably my favorite part- I just loved her sass. Also Jalal
SophiesSeries thank you!! also YEAH shazi was so sassy lol. she brought lots and lots of flavor to the book.
You just basically put all my thoughts in one place. Great review!
just to answer your question I may be totally wrong but what I got from reading the book is that Kahlid can't sleep due to the curse and its part of the curse. But I may be wrong
Omg. I just bought a ton of books, but your reviews always make me want to buy the books you recommend! Will definitely be checking this one out. :)
citylightstroll i'd love to hear what you think!!
Renee actually said that shahrzad would get along with kestrel very well.
I was talking with a friend of Marie's at a writing workshop I attended, and asked her if she knew anything about the Winner's Kiss. She did, but she said all she could tell me was that Marie is going to make her characters suffer!!!!! And I kind of just wanted to cry :(

This is hilarious! The second half had me laughing because I thought I was alone in my thinking! :)
I JUST FINISHED THIS BOOK AND IT WAS ALL KINDS OF GREAT OH MY GOODNESS
I just finished reading this book and it's certainly my most favourite book of 2015! I absolutely adored it!

I have a theory for the next book! My theory is that we're going to find out Shazi experienced Stockholm syndrome. That would totally explain why she let her guard down so easily and how Tariq thought her demeanor was so changed from when she went to the palace.

Karen Toledo i thought it was great! i hope it's on your tbr ;-)
I didnt see the glossary till I finished the book. 😔 so I was doing alot of Googling
I have read this book 3+ times
SHAH-razad, u pronounce the h and roll the r, and KHa-led, the kh is phlegmy lol. That's how you say their names.
that lowkey wizards of waverly place reference aahaha
Omg so sad it doesn't exist in FRENCH😔 sounds so good...
Thanks for the review! ^^
Here are the pronunciations
Khalid: khaaa-lid (not leed)
Tariq: taa-riq (not reeq)
Shahrzad: sheher-zaad
Shahrzad is actually pronouced
shuh-re-zad and Khalid is pronounced with a kh sound not a c or k sound and is more like khe-lid. I'll admit Shahrzad confused me a bit at first but once I read it in Arabic it clicked immediatly, and Khalid was too easy to figure out, I should know, I speak Arabic, I hope I clarified for you :).
Susanna Beshai WOW THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE PRONUNCIATIONS! i'll probably still end up butchering them, though, lol, but I'LL TRY TO BE BETTER!
+thebookbasement no problem, im glad i helped :)
isnt Khalid slowly descending into madness?
team khalid all the way.
First comment!! Love your videos Sophia!!
tam nguyen thank you so much
I actually thought this book was incredibly boring... just me?
