- The Grave and Life of Wizard of Oz Munchkin Coroner Meinhardt Raabe. Meinhardt Raabe grew up in a small town outside of Madison, Wisconsin where he lived a good amount of his life. I will tell you about his life's events including the Wizard of Oz casting, his life before and after his one and only film role to working for Oscar Mayer and driving the Weinermobile to his service during World War 2. We will visit his grave here and I will also show you the church he attended and where his funeral was held.

I met him in 1990 (I was age 19) as a catering waiter at an exclusive party in downtown Cleveland, OH. He was dressed up in his coroner costume. Before the party started (before any guests arrived) we had a great chat (just the two of us) about the movie. He was more than happy to answer any questions. At such a young age I was already used to meeting celebrities because of the catering company I worked for, but I still couldn't believe I was talking with someone who was in The Wizard of Oz. Later, from across the room, minding my own business, I watched all the rich guests posing with him. I wondered how he felt about it all, but he appeared to enjoy everything about what he was doing. I assume he was hired (got paid) to do these sorts of appearances. His wife may have been with him at this event.
That’s a pretty amazing story. He played an iconic part in one of the biggest movies ever made. Cherish those memories!

In the late 70s he served as a substitute teacher at my grade school near Philadelphia.
Great info on him! The Wizard of Oz is my all-time fav. I will still watch it when I get the chance. The church and graveyard are in a beautiful area. When you said canned sausage...do you mean Vienna Sausages in the can? I love those things. Not that they are good for you..but they bring back memories of both working on our farm and going fishing with my dad. We always had some along for a snack.
Thank you! The information I found wasn’t specific just that he was the first to suggest canning them to send to the troops so I’m not sure that’s a good or bad thing but I found it interesting. He was a pretty fascinating guy! 😀

Frank L. Baum is buried at Forrest Lawn Glendale. On the west side of the Great Masoulem. He has a large headstone there.

I was taking one of my Civil Air Patrol promotion tests and he was brought up in it.
I wonder if his parents were small people too?

No way he could have been a pilot! He could not reach the pedals or see over the dash.
He was a pilot in the Civil Air Patrol, at the time it was the main program for people who wanted to serve in the military but couldn't due to health or physical reasons.
He has flown alot of aircraft back then he was a instructor. He also did rescue flights other great lakes.
