Emily They are not trying to give them cultural education, they’re just trying to add some physical activity variety for elementary school students. Chill out and stop being so critical.
@@mcbeeze they are not critical... they are just sayin this is not a jig... and well. If someone puts dogshit in a plate and serves it to you as a steak. You would be pretty nice to say : "I've eaten steaks my whole life and i can honestly say that this isn't a steak" It's not criticism. If something is not the thing its supposed to be, it's a cool thing to name it. Would you be like : EAT IT ! YOU JUDGEMENTAL B**CH THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR FUN SO EAT IIIIIIT !!! twat
This is a wonderful starter "JIG" dance for kids. It serves the purpose for which it is being presented . . . irrespective of what it's being called. Enough said, folks!
This is similar to Irish sean-nós dancing, or "old style" Irish stepdance. Sean-nós is the original form of Irish stepdancing, which much later evolved into the modern style of stepdance we see in Riverdance and other shows. Sean-nós looks very different than modern stepdancing, with low-to-the-ground, improvised footwork and a relaxed body. Sean-nós is still danced all over Ireland and around the world. You can use your arms in sean-nós, so you don't need to hold your arms down like they do here.
Thank you, ladies!! It’s been a difficult covid year and my students are loving the dances I’ve been teaching them. They cannot get enough! I can’t wait to teach them this tomorrow. I can’t thank you enough 🙂
I came here looking for reference for a flying robot. And for its next act - learning to slice human head off with its propellers while doing an Irish jig dance...
I love you guys so much, thank you for introducing me to this amazing style of dance. All of my life I have been exposed to different styles of dance from jazz to tap to lyrical but this one..this one is different. This one opened me up to a whole new view on life and how to move my feet and believe in myself. It has given me confidence that I didn't know I had in me. I love you girls, thanks for changing my life. As they always never stop dancing til your feet don't work anymore.
This is a great video and a simple enough dance even for Grade 2 Music Students to learn. It is also WELL TAUGHT with GREAT INSTRUCTIONS. However, I would not use the word "Chorus" for the part where they are "criss crossing" their legs. It's more like a "fill" before they switch to a new dance pattern. A "fill" is a VERY SHORT pattern that repeats off and on throughout a song or piece of music. A "Chorus" in music is a WHOLE REPEATED TUNE with REPEATED WORDS that happens at least 2 or more times throughout a SONG and it is much LONGER. This short little "Criss Cross" pattern is way to short (only done once) to be called a "Chorus". When I taught this dance to my Music students, in a unit on Music of the United Kingdom, they got confused and said "A Chorus is much longer!" And to Emily, NO, this is not an Irish Jig, but parts of the steps are "jig-like" and easier for younger students. It's too hard for younger students with "zero" dance experience to try to "turn out" (like in ballet) and step front and back, which is a huge part of the traditional Irish Jig. I use this with Grades 2-3-"early" 4 and call it an "easier dance that's a little bit like a jig" and I use a traditional jig (different you tube video from an Irish Dance Studio-Savannah: Learn How to Jig) for Grades "late" 4-5-6-.
LOWER THE GATES SHE'S ARRIVED, I repeat to you all do not fall into the eldritch horror's trap, if you jig with her you'll be imprisoned like the victim in the video.
This woman is some sort of entity, and the second is definitely not normal (just look at her eyes). My theory is that through the jig these women are capable of luring in unsuspecting victims, through the fact that it is catchy and you are tempted to jig along. Once a victim begins to do the jig they will be unable to stop, like the women in the video (notice how it simply fades away with the women still doing the jig, the music continuing). I've no clue what happens once you get stuck in this loop, and honestly am too scared to think of it. Stay safe out there.
Calliope House is a slide - not a jig. And it was writen by an English piper - not an Irishman. The Slide is 12/8 .. the Jig is 6/8. They are played with different tempo. The slide is played more like the reel and will resolve on 4 as well as 6 - the dances are very different. I know Americans delight in re-writing history and culture - but tradition does not see you.
ozwhistles They are not trying to give them cultural education, they’re just trying to add some physical activity variety for elementary school students. Chill out and stop being so critical.
Hi Joan and Julie and thanks a lot for your video! I'm not Irish nor particularly into Irish dancing, so I am not arguing whether it's the real thing or not... I just found it easier to pick up than others - and I am completely hopeless! -, it looks and sounds Irish to me, so I decided to start teaching it to my kids for St Patrick's Day (I teach EFL in Italy) and they loved it! They learnt it far faster and better than me... It's hard to get to the end hopping and jumping just like you do though! Thanks!
Yeah it's not a REAL Irish Jig, they just call it that because it mimics what it "looks like". It's only for fun exercise for kids and should not be taken as a DANCE lesson ☺
I started Irish dance young too. For like little kids in a PE class that are just gonna look like little jumping beans it's okay at best but it isn't anything like traditional dance and I wish that if they were gonna take the time to teach the dances to these kids that they'd at least teach them the simpler beginner steps because it really isn't that hard and will probably be more fun for the kids anyway.
Someone said this is old style (sean-nos) Irish dancing. This is not an Irish Jig and it is also NOT even close to sean-nos dancing......look it up. The "Kick the can" parts and the "side stepping" and the "criss crossing" are not dance moves that are in sean-nos or the Irish Jig. But......like others said before....it's "ok" to get kids up and moving to the style of an Irish Jig, which (yes....to another person who commented) is in 6/8 time. No one needs to be rude here.....these ladies did a good job, as GYM teachers, getting kids up and moving. They are not Music Educators or Dance Educators though.
i am an irish dancer this is nothing close to irish dance for one the count stops at 8 not 12 and the "kick the can" is not a thing so please do you reserch
It’s something but as a former dancer that is not anything resembling an Irish dance. I cringe at all those lateral movements. My teacher would have killed me.
As someone who has been Irish Dancing since childhood I can honestly say this really cannot be described as an Irish jig 😂😂

Emily I was thinking the same stinking thing 😂😆😝

Yes. My daughter was stomping around saying that she was doing an Irish Jig. So I looked up to show her.

I use it for music in online school
I did and, unfortunately, I got exactly what I was looking for.

This seems way easier than the Howcast version. That version seemed a little more complicated.
