A handy Rhythm Mode selector takes you from common delay types to a setting that instantly calls up Andy‘s unique “halo“ effect, with plenty of controls onboard to tweak your sound to perfection. Got mine in two days ago- LOVE the tones- but figuring out how to go through presets and what they are exactly isn't very intuitive. Watching the video here when you said you were in the "Halo" preset- it looks way different then mine does- which is left blue light on- red light next to that on- and the farthest left red light on top on.... at least I think that's the preset- hard to say 'cause the instructions are a bit difficult to read- it's tough to tell what' "dot" is indicated in the factory preset halo settings section. The print is crazy small- even with +2 readers~! But otherwise my new favorite always on delay for sure.

    Hmm, might give the Walrus Audio Mako D1 a run for the money. The D1 has tap tempo at the ready without needing to hold the footswitch down first. I like that you can toggle 2 delays per preset on the Halo. The D1 can save 3, but you can only move forward in selecting a new delay sound. I wonder if there’s a way to scroll backwards to the previous preset on the Halo in live (vs saving preset) mode. I guess you need MIDI for that.

    I asked JHS to recommend something since they don't sell their Panther Cub delays anymore and they told me that they are releasing a new delay pedal in 2023 and to be on the lookout! Then the guy told me he would get the Keeley Halo instead if I had to get a new delay..like really? They recommended something that costs more than the pedal I was asking about to begin with 😆 and I had said I didn't appreciate the prices of the used Cubs still on the market. But this thing looks glorious!

    Good stuff. Thanks for the technical info. I'd love to know what all you can do with the external footswitch. Is it just switching between the two that are at your feet? How do you go between the banks. Sorry if I missed it.

    • @RobertKeeleyTV
      @RobertKeeleyTV 2 роки тому +3

      Good question! With an external set of switches you can control things like Bank A or B, you can switch thru preset banks 1-4, you can access tap tempo, and you can do infinite hold. You go between banks 1-4 by pressing both switches at the same time for a split second. The other external connection is for expression pedals, and you can control all of the knobs and their alt-features with the exp jack.

    Would this delay work running it in front of an overdriven tube amp, without using an effects loop?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for your message Donnie, great question. Delay into two amps (clean or dirty) is how Andy sometimes runs this pedal and what the design is based on. See this link: ua-cam.com/video/7oCzf2QYMHU/v-deo.html
      Depends on how wet you run the delay, how much feedback and how much gain on the amp, too.

    The trick to realizing if you need the pedal is seeing if the pedals sound effect is drastically different than all of your other sounds, songs, numbers, (you know your signature sound.) and it's not coloring over your tone.
    Recognizing there is a drastic difference with a pedal on and off is a red flag for me.Your playing should be sweet with or without the pedal ,so your not just relying on the pedal for the sound you are achieving.
    What is important is this...I always let the sound ,tone , and atmosphere create itself.Meaning it comes to me just from my playing not from an effect. But that's my opinion . However I know a lot cuz I'm an engineer. And working with people ,..they always tend to go back to more of a natural echo effect you get from a guitar by just your playing, how your playing , and a little bit of reverb from a nice amp .
    At the end of the mixing process ,players always tend to notice they got carried away with an atmosphere or effect ( like the Halo pedal will create), and want to only have that in some spots.
    The Halo pedal. It's a cool effect.but you would not want to make that your signature sound.,or be playing with that sound all the time. Your bandmates would be like" can u mellow it out , let's start from the roots, start from scratch" ..,and the only way to do that is turn that effects off .
    Effects get old (kind of like the '80s..) That's because our ears naturally tend to gravitate towards natural acoustics. (we're human beings not robots.)
    And don't get me wrong ,when I say natural acoustics,I don't mean acoustic guitar or playing the guitar dry,I'm talking about beautiful sounds that are made from electric guitar that are not dry. ) A sound that is very pleasing. To demonstrate what I'm talking about, a good example is if you listen to George Harrison's " Marwa Blues" on his last album brainwashed ...now that's more of a natural mystical sound. And I am aware of the slide he's using etc.Im only demonstrating the vibe of it. Anyway you might want to check that out ,that kind of sound is so pleasing to the ear. You know natural acoustics,tones ,and atmosphere that a guitar can reach always sounds more pleasing to our ears .
    Sometimes you just want to turn the effects off like " Ah get me out of this effects room (this echo tunnel.) And let me go out into the beautiful melodies and sounds of the real world, smell the real air "..create sounds on the beach that resonate under the moonlight.You want to clear your mind of the noise effects from pedals can give.
    Another example I can give you is.. sometimes people don't use OverDrive pedals they just use boost pedals ..and get a better overdrive from using a Kelly Kantina boost with like a vertex steel string clean drive. You can get a better overdrive than just an overdrive pedal ,because a overdrive pedal sounds too artificial .Or there's nothing like the overdrive tone you get out of pushing the tubes on a nice tube amp versus what a pedal can do . Anyway I love your Kelly Kantina booster.
    And lastly I would say you don't want to be the engineer at the same time you're the guitar player. More simple is better. If you crowd then you're going to lose motivation ( too many cooks in the kitchen) inspiration comes when you just plug it in and play .Like I said you don't want to be relying on a bunch of effects to achieve your tone. You don't want to be the engineer and the guitar player at the same time (it gets in the way of your performance, you're playing and your your motivation. You want the tone to come not from an effects pedal , but rather come from your motivation from just loving to play guitar .,.. plugging in and just playing. Sound is dead tone is alive. And a effects pedal is more about sound. Remember sound is dead tone is alive.!
