    I’ve had a bunch of 911’s and have a 997.2 Turbo S cabriolet which I’ve had a number of years. A blistering bottomless pit of power high performance sports car that can also take you across Europe. With its top down immersive driving experience (ex biker), a joyous engine sounding like Mahler...love the turbine whoosh over pops and bangs I’ve had before (save a Ferrari engine), it’s small size over newer 911’s and I’ve yet to find a more fulfilling car with such wide ranging capabilities. Each to there own but I also love the PDK. Sure, I miss a manual 5% of the time but who wants it in today’s traffic. A new (and very large!) 992 Turbo S cabriolet spec’d right is now pushing £200k and suddenly a 997.2 TS is looking a bargain.

      Neil Gaydon I second your opinion... I also own a 997.2 Turbo S coupe (I still ride motorcycles) and I can’t agree with you more, best all rounder ever! From a very engaging/spirited canyon drive to a holding hands date with the Mrs. The size of the car is spot on. Do I miss a manual? Not really as I drive a little manual vw gti which keeps that box checked. I think our cars are keepers!

    I just got my first 911- manual transmission 997.1 C2S. Of course I had to part with my 2017 Mark 7 VW GTI (only 18,000 miles). The 997 only has 14,000 miles but cost $71,000. The 997s are no longer a bargain but worth it.

My Turbo just went over 50k miles in September and it never disappoints. The power is incredible and most people I take for a ride cannot believe all of that power is coming from a 3.6L flat 6. There are few cars out there that I encounter that can stay with me.

    The DFI engines are undoubtedly more mechanically reliable, but I'm not keen on the potential for carbon build up in the inlet tract. Finding a car with a properly rebuilt M97 engine seems to me to be the ultimate long term ownership proposition. And, to me, the 997.1 is a better looking car than the 2nd gen. I think the design of the lights on the 2nd gen makes the car look a bit fat and droopy at the corners. 997.1 looks crisper and more modern.

      Have you seen much evidence of carbon build up p jay? My research so far seems to indicate highly efficient oil/air separation in the engine and some fuel injection on the inlet valves has meant that carbon build up is relatively light compared to the VAG rang of engines?

    • @sheldonkerr
      @sheldonkerr 3 роки тому +3

      I've never seen a 997.2 which suffers from carbon build up. That's since 2009 (11 years) with cars with over 200K on the clock. 997.2 with DFI is a more reliable engine (with a lot less parts) than 997.1

    Great video Jay - Many thanks. After almost 30 years of Porsche ownership, changing cars every few years, I bought a new 997.2 GTS in January 2011. It's now coming up for 10 years of age and I won't be changing it ever! It is the very best car I've ever owned - bar none - and, even though I've driven many of the newer 991 and 992's mainly as courtesy cars during services, I'm not even tempted to move away from my GTS. What is your opinion of this model? - Many thanks again...

    • @JAYREAD

      Thank you, kind sir! Well, the Porsche community seems to have the greatest amount of love for the GTS. I wasn’t expecting this but the feedback I have received since doing the film has been that the GTS is a sweet spot in the range. They’re pretty rare too so I think you should absolutely keep it because I think it’ll hold its value well over time. Glad you enjoyed the film! More to come!

    Standard GT3 for me, it’s 90% as fun as the RS for a lot less money. Put in the RS flywheel and you are 95% there. Drove both a 997.2 turbo S and a GT3 and GT3 hands down is the sharper more focused machine. Not really livable as an everyday car but as a weekend toy it is sublime. Ideally I would love to have a C2S or GTS as an everyday car as well

    wow, I have been waiting for this video that gives a full run down of the 997line up. I too am a fan of the 996 and came very close to purchasing a 996, but I want to hold out for the 997. 997 Porsches prices right now are so incrementally close to each other I get FOMO (fear of missing out) or a feeling of settling for less than what I want. as I look to buy my first Porsche I want it to be the "right" one and have no regrets

    • @JAYREAD
      @JAYREAD  4 роки тому +1

      Super glad it was helpful! Makes the effort worthwhile with comments like these! Thanks! Do you know, I feel the same way. However isn’t that the same with everything and then you relentlessly want more than you need when what you have is WAY more than enough. I always have half an eye on a 996 Turbo (which I believe is the next natural step up rather than a 997) but then I drive my car (996 C2) and I cant see the point in spending another $20k (probs 85% of the value of my current car) to get a car which is 35% more? Each to their own, I guess, but I’m schooling myself to get over FOMO!

    • @LaxMerange
      @LaxMerange 4 роки тому +1

      @@JAYREAD absolutely spot on. the FOMO and incremental pricing is everywhere . From Cars to iPhones : X, Xr, 11,11pro, 11proS, then each phone has 64Gb or 128Gb version of each. blurring the the price gap.
      the 996 turbo has been a real contender in the choices of 1st 911 for me too. and I believe that the only the 996: Turbo, Gt3, and GT2 variants will appreciate with the normal price curve of all 911s. I could be 100% wrong and the egg era will become a collectors holy grail as they become more rare.
      but again FoMo , do i want my 1st introduction into Porsche to be an all wheel drive experience??? GT2 are out of the question in price. so I turn back to the 997, as I am looking for a US $60k purchase price.

    Why the 997.2 Carrera GTS Cabriolet is the best 997:
    1. The only manual, wide-body, RWD, convertible 997 ever offered!
    2. Costs 150k less that speedster but same performance. PLUS, More convenient roof, 2+2 seating and manual transmission availability
    3. Only 7hp less than the 997.1 GT3 RS: It’s a the sweet-spot between a GT3 & a Cabriolet
    4. No turbo lag, more than a 2016 Carrera S, center-lock wheels, LSD availability
    Manual GTS cabs are nearly impossible to find on earth and prices have double in the last 3 years - Porsche fans know what's up!

    Not the 997.1 with bore scoring issues and ims failure 🤦‍♂️

      That was an absolute rarity and massively overblown.

      @Peter Best ......You got to be joking there’s a local Porsche specialist to me who’s doing bore score repairs and ims jobs on a weekly basis....

      @@mikefranky no I’m serious it was massively over reported and made into a larger story than the statistics showed. I’ve known 997.1’s with 100k or 150k or many with lesser mileage with zero bore score or IMS issues. The truth is these are exaggerated rumours. A garage will always sell the scare story to get the business regardless of whether it’s needed or not. There are plenty that have run just fine and normal for 10/15 years with normal wear and tear.

      @@peterbest5938 ...Maybe a few will escape expensive repairs but when you get the oil leak or piston slap sound like I had on mine that’s no scare tactic from any garage my friend..that’s reality.

      @@mikefranky not from where I’m standing. Even the Porsche owners clubs admit its massively overblown. I do not t deny there are some cars that have failed but the % are small
