Shaved ice, all the way. I've never really been a fan of icream any ways. But when I lived in Oklahoma, there was a little local place called Mac's that did such good shaved ice. They'd always put a single gummy bear on the top too. I miss that, place, it's been years and I'd live to know how it's doing now.

They are huge chunks of ice shaved with a tool that…doesnt shave into a fine, powdery substance, and they tend to be PACKED. The “sinks to the bottom” part I dont understand though, its perhaps just a bad quality syrup, or its badly shaved ice?

I learned, in 7th grade, my world history teacher was telling us a story, of when she went and worked in crops, somewhere out of the US, at an incredible hot location.
On the first day, when they went on break and she was sweating like crazy and overheating - she said she expected ice cold drinks, to be served; like iced tea or something of the likes.
      Well, not quite..
      They served hot coffee.
She thought it was ridiculous, and refused to drink the hot beverage, and opted for cooler.
From what I recall, she shared she nearly passed out, from heat exhaustion/stroke.
By the next day, she learned her lesson.
She explained how when the body is in such a hot state, in order to effectively cool itself down quickly - drinking hot liquid works, as it causes the body to think it’s gettin warmer outside.
And if the body thinks it’s getting warmer - it’s going to put more effort, into cooling itself off (i.e. by way of sweating more); versus thinking it’s cooling down, due to consuming the cool substance, and cause it to not lit so much effort into cooling itself down.
Same thing goes, for consuming cold substances, in colder climates.
If the body is cold, and One consumes something cold - the body will assume it’s getting even colder outside, and put more effort in to warming itself up; versus drinking something hot, causing the body to think it’s getting warmer, and not put so much energy towards maintaining said warmth.
I’m not sure if it’s scientifically accurate - this was loooooong before Google; and I’ve, yet, to take the to look into it, to be able to state of it’s fact or not.
However, I may not be a scientist, though, it makes sense to me.
So, perhaps you aren’t an odd group, whatsoever, though, in fact - are more honed in to biological instincts, than many aren’t as graced with opportunity, to develop.

@@XOChristianaNicole hey I really liked this comment! I think you're onto something, it sounds to me like homeostasis: your body compensates for any changes it experiences. If you're cold it tries to warm up and if you're hot it tries to cool down :). From that standpoint, I guess eating cold things in cold weather makes sense!

"The hot drink still does add a little heat to the body, so if the sweat's not going to assist in evaporation, go for a cold drink.” Overall, the lesson learned is that in hot, dry conditions, drinking hot drinks will cool you down, but if you're in a humid location, it's best to stick to cold beverages.

If you're trying to make this at home and you're running into the problem she is talking about, that it just sinks through the shaved ice, so most of it is just plain ice with the tiniest amount of flavour, try this:
Don't scoop shaved ice into the bowl, pump the liquid flavour over it, and serve it. Shave the ice, put it all in a big bowl (I recommend chilling the bowl and only taking it out of the freezer when you need it), pump the liquid flavour on it (also I recommend chilling this in the fridge, so it's not frozen but slightly thicker and less likely to melt the shaved ice), and then stir it up until it's evenly distributed through all the shaved ice.
Then put the bowl (that's now full of shaved ice) back into the freezer until there's no liquid left (both the ice and liquid have crystalized). You can shave it down again if you accidentally freeze it solid. Not letting the bowl touch the walls inside the freezer will help prevent that though.

In Spain we don't have shaved ice per se, but we have a drink called granizado that is basically more liquid shaved ice made of lemonade, strawberry, etc (basically any fruit syrup), coffe or orxata (a milky drink made of xufas, a type of nut). We drink it during the summer. The main differences with shaved ice are the consistency (we drink it and eat the leftover ice) and the preparations (the flavour is already put since the beggining and we have to move the mixture of water and syrups so it doesn't freeze together as a block).
