How is your comment relevant? There is no doubt that Luther wrote two very antisemitic books and he openly promoted antisemitism. It is also a fact that Hitler was inspired by his writings. It is also a fact that the protestant areas supported Hitler in the 1933 election, pushed by their priests and the Catholic areas like lower Bavaria did not support Hitler. It is a fact that the protestant Churches in Germany have apologised for their involvement and endorsing the Holocaust in the 500 year celebration of the reformation in 2017. Fact is also that for every protestant priest ending up in a concentration camp, 16 catholic priest ended up there, this despite the fact that of the 60 million Germans at the time, 40 million were protestants/ Lutherans. Facts remains facts, no matter how many excuses you try to find. Fact is that Luther, most likely unwilling, laid the foundation for the Holocaust.

This does not implicate all Lutherans, but it should be noted that Reformed leaders like Luther retained Roman Catholic Amillennialism with its claim that the church replaced Israel, which they used to justify immense power, and which was used to support Antisemitism.

The Roman Catholic Church helped and aided the European Jewish people, while the Allies were aware of the Holocaust and refused to act. The Church Issued 1,600 visas per year from 1939 to 1945 for Jews to escape from Europe to the Dominican Republic. In Rome out of some 8,000 Roman Jews, some 7,000 survived by taking refuge in Vatican buildings. In Hungary, the Church gave an estimated 80,000 certificates to Jews showing they were baptized Catholics to exempt them from harm. The church helped countless thousands to escape to Romania; some 360,000 Jews would leave for Israel from Romania up to the year 1965.

Hi! I’m Carlos, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I’m a Reformed Baptist and, unfortunately, I think that this video “threw out the baby with the water”. I think it gives the idea that Protestants, as a whole, were antisemitic or that the Protestant Reformation resulted only in more persecution against the Jewish people. And this is very unfair.
First of all, as a Protestant myself, and as almost every Protestant today, I deeply repudiate all Martin Luther’s teachings against Jews.
I deeply love the Jewish people and consider myself as a Christian Zionist.
I think the main error of the video was to treat Protestants as a monolithic group. And it is well known that Protestants are the least monolithic of the so-called “branches” of Christianity.
Here are the things why I think this video is very inaccurate regarding the relationship between Protestants and Jews.
    1) Despite the Martin Luther’s teachings against the Jews, Lutheran churches throughout the world have repudiated those teachings. This was symbolized by a sign present at St. Andreas’s Church in Eisleben, Germany, where Luther preached his last sermons which had a horrible antisemitic content. During the Nazi regime, only part of the Lutheran church supported the government (as only part of the Catholic church did). There were several leaders of the Lutheran church that were against the government and the persecution of Jews, to say the least. Some even fought against the Nazis, such as Lutheran Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer. So, there were antisemitic “Nazi Lutherans” that endorsed the government, but to give the idea that Lutherans as whole have been antisemitic is a complete overstatement.
    2) As I said before, Protestants are NOT a monolithic group. In fact, there were several Protestant Reformations, resulting from different historical, geographical and theological contexts and not just only one. The three main sites of Reformation were Germany (Lutheran), Switzerland (Calvinist) and England (Anglican).
    3) Having this in mind, I must remind you that one of the places that Jews were very well received in Europe was the Netherlands. And why? Because they were Reformed (Calvinists) and their official church was the dutch Reformed Church. They always had the policy of religious freedom in their territories. Do you know that the first synagogue in the American continent was built here in my country, Brazil, at the city of Recife (Kahal Zur Israel synagogue)? And you know why? Because it was under Dutch occupation! Jews really prospered in Recife. And after the Portuguese Catholics recovered their power over the territory, several of them fled to North America to a city called...guess what? New Amsterdam! (current New York City).
    4) In England and North America, several Reformed Protestants not only supported the Jewish people, but preached in their favor, mainly several Puritans and their heirs (such as Charles Spurgeon). Mainly in those contexts arose the Christian Zionist movement and this Philosemitism overflowed to several other Protestant denominations of non-Reformed confessions and is present throughout the world today in Protestant churches. Even Jewish historians recognize the importance of Christian Zionism for the foundation of the State of Israel and its current support. This support is not only rhetorical, but also political and even economic. There are several Protestant organizations that even donate financially to several Israeli Jewish organizations, including those that help Jewish people around the world to make aliyah.
That’s why, during his administration, Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly said, in several occasions, that the best friends of the State of Israel and the Jewish people are the Evangelical Christians (i.e. Protestants). And Protestant support for Israel today is even stronger than those from some Jewish communities around the world!
By the way, in keeping with the Reformation principle of Sola Scriptura, the more Bible believing are Protestant Churches, the more they love and support Israel and the Jewish people. The only so-called “Protestants” that are antisemitic and against Israel are liberal churches that deny the doctrine of Biblical inerrancy.
    5) This Philosemitism is so strong among Protestants that some even died for protecting Jews during WW2. Have you ever heard about the Ten Boom family, a Protestant Baptist family that had some of its members sent to concentration camps and some died there for protecting Jews during WW2? For those who ignore this, I strongly recommend watching the movie “The Hiding Place” that tells about this story.
Therefore, I think that this video was unfortunate and unfair to portrait that the Protestant Reformation was something that resulted mainly in persecution of Jews. Actually, it’s just the opposite.
I strongly recommend you to study more about the issue of Philosemitism among Christians, mainly among Protestants. I would also recommend people to read Oskar Skarsaune’s book “In the Shadow of The Temple” on this issue. And I think also that it would be an excellent idea to post a video about the issue of Philosemitism among Protestants and about Christian Zionism, if you really are interested to portrait a true picture about the relationship between Protestants and Jews throughout History.

Thanks to Christian Zionists of course Israel state has become stronger and stronger. But I guess the video was more about Martin Luther and his anti semitic teachings and never to demean entire Protestant people. @@singhjasbeer5216 I think the video began with Martin Luther but afterwards treated the Protestant Reformation as uniform process, reducing it only tto Lutheran Reformation. Even so , it would be unfair to reduce the Lutheran Reformation to only what Luther taught. After his death, the Lutheran Reformation went on with Philip Melanchton and others, even abandoning several of Luther's teachings, not only regarding the Jews.
I think the video generalize not only Lutheran Reformation, but Protestant Reformation as whole in terms of what Luther teached against the Jews in the end of his life. Here in Brazil, Evangelical Christians are strong supporters of Israel. As in the US, only liberal "Protestant" denominations, that deny Biblical inerrancy do not give them that support.

@@singhjasbeer5216 Yeshua (Jesus) said that not all people that call him: "Lord, Lord..." will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. He also told the Mashal (Parable) of the Wheat and the Weed and Tares, showing that within the visible community of his disciples, there will be always False "Christians" among True Christians. Not all people or group of people that say that they are Protestants, are actually so. Therefore, any group that preaches hate and discrimination tomarás anyone, are NOT true Protestants. G-d does not discriminate anyone in any basis: He sees all human beijos equally crentes in His image, equally transgressors of His Word and determina divine justice for this, and therefore in need of His mercy and free forgiveness through the atonement (kapparah) provided by Yeshua/Jesus. This is a fundamental concept in Protestant faith. It's not possible to be a true Protestant and contradict this.
Liberal "Protestants" are another case of self-labeled Protestants that are not actually so since they don't believe fundamental doctrines of the Protestant faith.
"Prosperity gospel" churches are another example. G-d's Grace is not purchaseble neither with money neither with good works. If it were, it would contradict the concept of Grace (which you can't buy or merit) and again this goes against fundamental Protestant doctrine.
Therefore, not everyone that claims to be Protestant or Christian is actually one.

  • @carlosaugustowelte9247
    @carlosaugustowelte9247 3 роки тому +11

There's something important I forgot to mention in my previous comment below:
Despite the indisputable fact that Luther's antisemitic teachings were used as Nazi propaganda, neither Hitler was a Christian and neither Nazi ideology are Protestant or Christian in nature.
Nazi ideology was based on Social Darwinism, which taught that "stronger nations" had the right to dominate over "weaker" ones, as in nature "stronger or more adapted species dominate weaker or less adapted ones. In Nazi ideology, the Arian race was superior to all of others and had the right to dominate and eliminate all the others, including the Jweish people.
However, in Christian theology, there's no such thing of a people being superior to another. And there's no superiority between human individuals in G-d's sight: we are all created in G-d's image, all equally sinners when having our lives analyzed by G'd Law and having the only same one possibility of atonement for sins and have reconcilitation with G-d. All this independently of ethnic or national background.
That's why Paul says in Galatians 3: 28, in the New Testament: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." This verse is NOT saying that, in Messiah, people lose their national or gender identity. But, that these variables do not make them more or less important in G-d's sight.
And also we believe in a doctrine called "Universal Priesthood of Believers" that teaches that every Christian has equal access to G-d, indendently of their background, including ethnic and national.
In Social Darwinism, the stronger has the right to oppress the weaker. But, in Protestant Faith, we have inherited the Jewish values of the Bible that the stronger MUST PROTECT the weaker (e.g. the widow, the orphan, the poor and the foreigner).
So, since proven that Nazi ideology and Protestantism are completely incompatible, to portrait Hitler as Protestant or Nazi ideology as endorsed by Protestantism is a blatant falsehood.

      @@EternalReich88 Well, separating the issues:
      1) Regarding Nazis, History tells better about their acts. It is true that Nazis had allies from several races. However, that the so-called "Racial supremacy" of the "Arian race" (which was influenced by eugenist and social darwinist theories) was part of their ideology, I think there's no question. If they partially ignored it for pragmatic reasons during the war, it's another issue.
      2) As far as I know (if I'm mistaken, someone please correct me), the State of Israel recognizes the marriages of people from all religions, independently of race or ethnic or national background. Arab Israelis, for example, either Muslim or Catholics (Roman or Orthodox) have their marriages recognized by the Israeli government.
What is an issue in Israeli society is that, between JEWS, only Orthodox Jewish marriages performed in Israel are recognized. But, this has nothing to do with race, ehtnicity, national background, or if one of both of the people involved are born Jewish or converts to Orthodox Judaism.
So, from the Jewish marriages performed in Israel, only the ones perfomed by Orthodox rabbis are recognized by Israeli government. Conservative and Reformed Jewish weedings are not recognized by the Israeli government. However, people from these branches of Judaism have been trying to change that.
Therefore, the issue has nothing to do with race, ethnicity or national background. It has NOTHING to do with racial discrimination, but on religious grounds.
By the way, the Israeli government DO recognize Jewish (from any branch) and non-Jewish weddings performed outside Israel. That's why some Secular Jews (hilonim) and other Israeli Jews that are not Orthodox go to other countries to marry outside of Orthodox supervision when they want to (commonly Cyprus) and, when they come back, they have their marriages recognized by the Israeli government.
So, again, anyone can object based on various grounds the Israeli government about only recognizing marriages in Israel perfomed by Orthodox clergy, but this is another issue. The question here is that it has nothing to do with racial discrimination whatsoever.
      3) When you say "rabbis call all non-Jews slaves", this an overstatement. Fisrt of all, there is a Jewish saying that "when ten Jews gather (i.e. a minyan), we'll have eleven opinions" (or something like that...). So, as any human group, Jews are not monolithic at all. So, with all due respect, I think you incurred in the same mistake of the authors of the video in generalizing Protestants.
It is actually true that some rabbis discriminate non-Jews and that some parts of the Rabbinic literature say horrible things about non-Jews. However, there are also parts of the Rabbinic literature that teach that there are non-Jews called "tsadikkim umot haOlam" (Righteous people among the nations of the world). That's why in Israel there are even monuments celebrating the memories of non-Jewish people that not only supported the Jewish people (e.g. Oswaldo Aranha, a Brazilian diplomat that was in favor of the creation of the Jewish State in the UN, in 1948), but also some have given their lives to aid Jewish people (e.g. some of the Ten Boom family in the Netherlands).
So, to say "rabbis", in general, discriminate non-Jews is a huge overstatement.
There are several rabbis and Jewish lay people that cooperate and have deep and sincere friendships with non-Jews without any demonstration of prejudice.
As a Gentile (non-Jewish) Protestant, I can also say this not only from knowledge about the Jewish faith and writings, but also from personal experience, since I have Jewish friends, with friendships tested through time (also difficult times, that actually show who your real friends trully are) for decades.

sandy fox, God's call on Israel cannot be broken, and God's promises to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and others cannot be broken. Unfortunately, Augustine developed an Amillennial system in which God supposedly did break those things. Augustine believed the church replaced Israel. He supported this by attacking the Bible, claiming the unfulfilled prophecies were not what they look like but abstract things whose interpretation is left to the leaders.
The Roman Catholic Church adopted this new Amillennial system and claimed rulership over the world until the end of time when the Jesus would only come to judge how everyone kept _their_ teachings. This was a massive power-grab, and the breakaway Orthodox and Reformed churches adopted it, too, more power-grabs.
Something else happened during the Protestant Reformation, Englishmen disobeyed their Reformed leaders by translating and scattering Bibles far and wide, and that's when Dispensationalism and the Rapture doctrines were rediscovered (circa 1600 AD). The truth is the prophecies are what they look like and will be fulfilled, the church is not Israel, Jesus will come to remove corrupt leaders, restore the kingdom of Israel and rule the world from David's throne in Jerusalem for 1,000 years.
Sadly, the world must endure the Great Tribulation before his kingdom on earth, but Jesus will take faithful saints to heaven before it starts. Signs of the beginning of the end include ethnic and international strife, famines, plagues (like the current one), and widespread earthquakes. Then the Lord will be at the doors for the rapture when Israel returns to the Mosaic Covenant and starts building a new temple.

There is nowhere in the New Testament that Christ or His apostles advocated the persecution and extermination of Jews. In fact St Paul himself said he wished he would be accursed if it would result in the salvation of the Jews (Romans 9:1-3). Upon His resurrection, the disciples asked Christ, "Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" Historical antisemitism among the so-called followers of Christ has absolutely nothing to do with the teachings of the Master Himself, and it's important to separate the two. As my hero, Mahatma Gandhi once said, "When I look at the teachings of Christ, I am tempted to be a christian, but when I look at the conduct of His followers, I am discouraged from doing so." However, it is also a fact that some of the staunchest supporters of Jews and Israel today are the Evangelical Christian community.

Luther's legacy is a sad testimony of Christian / Jewish relationship. There is no way to reconcile Luthers' latter treatment of Jews except to conclude that he had lost his mind. That level of hatred for the Jews is unbiblical and clearly not Christian in the least. The standard of Christian / Jewish relationship has to be the Apostle Paul and his statement that he would rather loose his salvation (if that were possible) so that the Jews would come to know their Messiah and be saved. The contrast in Luther's zeal for God and his latter hatred of God's chosen people reveals the depth of sin that is inherent in each persons heart - one that only God through His Son Jesus can redeem!

Considering what he later achieved, inspiring the Holocaust, maybe that was not a bad thing. Sorry, but you have an anachronism. Jews entered Russia only as a result of the Russian occupation of the lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. If you look into the matter, I think you will see that the Russians conducted many pogroms themselves against the Jews. For example, Fiddler on the Roof is set in Ukraine and the pogrom is conducted by the Russian occupiers. The original story was written by a Jewish refugee (Sholem Aleichem) from Ukraine (Kiev Oblast). Of course, the two world wars forced many to move eastward, hence Russia's modern Jewish population.

NT should not teach opposite to Tanak. Anyone who believes in NT, it should be the revelation of the all pacts and promises of Tanak. And, NT contents is basically, at least 50% of Tanak words. No rational Christian would back up the violence that Luther used in his writings, but you can’t skew it and call it anti-semitism like this. He was wrong in doing this, but people need to understand that he was doing it because of his belief in the truth of Christianity. He was disgusted by the Jews because of their faith, not their blood. That’s the difference between him and hitler. He wanted Jews to come to the Christian faith, and he wrote that as well. Yes he was wrong in his violent suggestions, but geez he’s no nazi. This video kinda sucked.

Protestants claim to follow a Jewish Messiah and adhere to a new testament bible that was written by Jewish followers of Jesus. If the NT doctrine is correct, and I believe it is, one day everyone will stand in judgment before Jesus, who is still Jewish, ‘the Lion of the tribe of Judah’ and have to give account for why they thought they were better than Jews. Every anti-Semitic act will be punished. Every white supremacist will have to give account and pay for their hate.
