- Alessandro Piccinini (1566 - 1638)
Toccata I and Corrente I
from Intavolatura di liuto, et di chitarrone, libro primo.
Italian composer and master lutenist Alessandro Piccinini was born in Bologna, one of the great centers of lute and guitar tradition at that time. He was a musician in the court of the Este family at Ferrara, entering the service of Duke Alfonso II. After the death of the latter in 1597, Alessandro Piccinini returned to Bologna, where he was employed by Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini. He left two volumes of lute music, the second published posthumously. In the introduction to his first volume of music, Piccinini wrote a lengthy preface, which includes a detailed manual on performance techniques. He also claims to have invented the archlute. Piccinini's surviving compositions include toccatas, correntes and galliards, as well as different kinds of variations. Here is a performance of the first Toccata and first Corrente. Until now I have not been able to locate any recording of the first Toccata in F major. I have added a little improvisation of my own to the introduce the work.
The beautiful Archlute used in this performance was built by Spanish luthier Carlos Arincón.
Performed by:
Polivios Issariotis

This performance makes me like the sound of the archlute, Polivios. It has a sweet and balanced timbre, suitable for solo playing, unlike extended baroque lutes, theorbos and especially these now popular extended guitars!
With its tuning, anything from the renaissance could played straight off, and with transcriptions via, for instance, the Fandango Tablature Editor, most of the Baroque repertoire available in JTZ format.
(From Peter, I came here to check the sound quality re recording equipment and am impressed!)
Jesus the good sovereign king loves you :" )
I think this is the first UA-cam video I've ever watched with no negative comments...
This is so compelling.
It's soothing
Yet I can't relax to it -it's causing me to experience an overwhelming variety of emotions very suddenly...
Thank you so much for sharing.
Your brother is a very close friend of mine and every so often he speaks of you and this insane talent you have, but hearing it was something else entirely.... phenomenal... Thank you again.
Crazy awesomeness! Out of this world.

Jesus Christ loves you :" )
Wow this is such an amazing video. The setting is so beautiful (is this Greece?) I bought an archlute recently and will definitely try Piccinini. The instrument has a rather small solo repertoire but Piccinini is def next on my list--make more archlute videos! I wonder what you would do with Doni, Kapsberger (his book for the lute), and Zamboni?
Fantastic! Thanks! Where is that? It looks amazing 😳
