  • Invited out on my friends new boat to do some Fluke Fishing!
Overall a slow day with a total of 6 fish caught. 5 shorts and 1 keeper at exactly 18" the minimum size to keep. Fun day regardless kicking it with friends!

You make a good point! Next time will avoid the gill plate. Unfortunately the fish was undersize so it had to go back...dead or alive.

my set up is the exact reverse...spro bucktail with gulp maybe a two foot leader with #4 hook and live Killie... Fluke Killer

Nice! So in the water the killie trails behind?

@@NE_Pigeons yes sir .. bottom bounce the jig... And the killie swings and darts. All my hook ups are mostly on the killie.... Don't be afraid of the small hook... I landed 22 and 24 inch fluke with that set up ..

The bite was very slow for us that day. I know the fluke will move out into deeper waters / the ocean when it gets hotter.
Imo keep your rig simple. Use a hi low like I showed with a gulp at the top. Cast out and do a steady retrieve, and bounce the tip of the rod every now and then. If the fish are there they will strike! Fluke are really aggressive! Also learn the tides. Some areas do better on outgoing vs incoming and vise versa. Thanks for the comments!

Just got one of my personal best today! No weight but about 25 inches. I'll try and post a video.
We went out to the ocean. I ended up getting sea sick. Buddy had 1 short out there. We came back to the bay. I had 5 fish. 3 sea robin and 2 fluke. One fluke was a keeper and the other a short. Bite was def on the slow side. I used to to better early in the season from my kayak in shallow water...

@@NE_Pigeons when we went we fished in about 10 feet of water out there at high tide. Kinda close to the bank and right where the “Arthur kill” let’s out. Also had a similar jig as you had on but only had one on the line. Thanks for the reply

The last few trips all my fish were caught in roughly 30ft of water. We were straight out from the Navy Pier. Lots of other boats there including the charter boats.
During the summer Fluke begin to migrate into deeper waters. Out of the bay into the ocean. I would think 10ft of water right now is just too warm for them. Try fishing in the 30ft +. Or when in doubt follow the charter boats 🤣.
When it comes to bottom fishing for fluke I believe a lot has to do with luck. Simply being in the right place at the right time. The skill part is being able to read the water/ff if you have one, using the proper rig, being able to detect bites, setting the hook properly and keeping pressure on the rod when hooked up.
Fluke are aggressive and not really picky eaters. They will go after a jig/lure consistently. If you feel a hit and miss just slow things down and keep working your jig or send it back down. If the fluke is there it will go after it again.
Tight lines and keep fishing! You will catch that monster fish one day! ✌

@@seanmcdermott4634 If you can't get out to deeper waters, I would switch over to fishing for the cocktail blues. Saw a bunch of them popping up around the Arthur Kill area. They looked accessible from shore. Throw small tins or poppers on a light rod...they are always a blast!

@@NE_Pigeons awesome good looking out. My first time down in the area. It’s a small 14’ aluminum boat and it was getting dark because we started out in the Passaic in Kearny so we didn’t want to go too far out. Definitely have to try for them next time.
