I always watch you guys when I wake up on Saturday’s and you always make me hungry! Lol great video! I can’t wait to see where you both head off to next
I am mostly saddened by the increased amount of graffiti in Oaxaca since it is so beautiful there. Thanks for sharing all the changing trends, I sure hope they can eventually right the ship.
Amigos thank you for visiting Oaxaca, remember that people in Oaxaca don't have many opportunities like the central or northern states and it may be that society feels sad by the pandemic. Also Oaxaca is one of the most visited places in Mexico, so people get use to see gringos all the time and might don't want to bother you. Anyway keep enjoying Mexico, wherever you decide to stay long term. Thank you for visiting Oaxaca!
I'm guessing the pandemic is a big reason for the rooftop bars' success. I was talking to the owner of a café in San Miguel de Allende last weekend who is struggling because they don't have any outdoor space and people still don't feel comfortable eating indoors, especially as the weather is so nice all the time. Do you guys have a Google map you can share? All the places you go to look so amazing. Perhaps you could share a Google map with the restaurants you visit (and link to the videos where they feature).
You make an excellent point! That could totally be it! We definitely feel more comfortable outside right now, especially when the weather is so nice. As for Google Maps, we did include a few screenshots of maps (when there was an opportunity) but we listed the names of all 5 restaurants in the description as they appear on Google Maps
@@TangerineTravels There is a way to set up a map with your saved places and share it publicly. It could be an additional way to promote your videos...
Maddie was spot on. When my wife and I visit San Miguel De Allende one of our favorite things to do is visit all of the rooftop bars & dining facilities.
It's funny for a "pandemic" that is sooo serious my 94 year old neighbor down the hall is still alive although I would imagine she wouldn't be if she was in a long term death home.
Great video! Regarding some of the points that you mentioned, I feel a lot of these are pandemic related. Rooftop restaurants are usually open air which adds to everyone’s safety, great idea. Graffiti? I think a lot of people are venting their frustrations, virus, reduced tourism, lost wages etc. Perceived unfriendliness? Possibly like the rest of the world, I think everyone Is exhausted from the last year. Keep smiling and Viva Mexico ! 🇲🇽
I agree. @tangerinetravels : I think the "unfriendliness" is because most people have to wear masks and so it's not as natural to salut. I also have not had the same experience as you about not being thanked when I add a tip. They have said "muchas gracias."
A lot of people don't know but there's been a lot of non oaxacans moving to oaxaca. People that come from cities with a lot of criminals and drugs problems are swarming to oaxaca. My parents are native indigenous oaxacans so we know what's going on.

OMG @ 4:30 whwn maddie was talking about the "rocking bull/horse giant huevos" omg that had me rolling so hard that i cried lmao....that is one of the many things i love about you both is your sense of humor :)
I feel like that happens when areas become developed. People tend not to be more focus on a busy lifestyle that they forget to socialize. I was like that when I lived in a big city like Chicago.
Those rooftop bars looked awesome! Thanks for sharing, guys! I don't think we checked out any of the places you went to in this video while we were there. Super cool key-throw transition by the way. 😎 Great video. -Jim
Wish we had gone to some of these earlier so we could have recommended them to you! Once we started looking for them, we found a LOT more than we expected 😅
.. in my experience, the Oaxacans tend to be a bit "stand off ish" until they get to know you .. they will study you for a long while .. after that,, (when they feel they can trust you) you will be invited down into the magic that is there ..
I came to oaxaca as a foreigner nearly 8 years ago and loved it so much that I'm still here. It's not without it's problems but I love it un chingo. Apart from the crappy graffiti there are some really well done print based images on the walls which a lot of people and bussinesses feel gives Oaxaca that toque artístico. Please consider taking a day trip to Centro de Artes San Agustín. Which is about 25 min drive from the center. It's a beautiful ex wool factory which was converted into an arts center by the late Mexican artist and all round oaxacan super hero Francisco Toledo. Lovely setting and really fascinating.
one of the things that attracted me to mexico was everyone greeting everyone when walking down the streets, i miss that, but i do, do it here where every i go and most the time i do it in spanish. i get alot of looks but most will greet me back. gosh some of the meals you guys had looked so good
Rooftop bars and restaurants are quite common here in San Miguel de Allende. Like you said, it's a wonderful experience to dine outside with the views, comfortable seating, in the beautiful weather-day and night. Many of the buildings in centro are small inside so the roofs make for a great open area. Besides the restaurants and bars, many of the homes in the area take advantage of the roof and have beautiful finished spaces to enjoy time outside the house.
Are they literally saying that they don't stay in Oaxaca just because people don't treat them in a special way for the simple fact of being American? It really makes me happy that they won't stay. The truth is that the foreigners who stay to live here only hurt us locals. Thank you for not continuing to increase gentrification in this beautiful city.
Hi Guys, Great vlog as usual. The day I was in Oaxaca, I was sick in bed with the flu, remember as it was my birthday, 8th March last year..so I’m am so glad you are showing it. My friends went to visit the cemetery but it was closed..hopefully I can see all of Oaxaca next time. They are saying in Australia that international flights might start in October, I am keeping my fingers crossed....love to you all. xxxx
I am really looking forward to seeing where you land for your home base. Love watching your videos. Great insight and keeping it real. Thank you both and Laska!
In my 66 years I've lived in a few places/destinations. When the novelty wears off and you become a "local" and things change. You have, in my mind, been converted to being a local in Oaxaca. Yes! It takes longer since you are young.
My fiancé and I are planning a trip to Mexico in the summer. You guys are helping us prepare for it. Love watching your videos and they are super helpful for us. Thank you so much!
I appreciate the respectful and kind manner in which you disclosed why you will not choose this plane as your home. If your soul is not jiving with the vibe, find that place before you settle. The drinks all looked delicious.
I believe a major factor that will help you decide in which state to stay for a long term will be making friends. I understand is difficult to trust people nowadays but when you find true and genuine friendship that’s when you actually start to see a future in that place. Don’t wait for waiters to start a conversation, speak to people down the road, neighbors, store owners, anybody (specially locals). You’ll see how your perspective can change based on this.
Man, you two would have a real bad time in Berlin if you think the graffiti in Oaxaca is bad!! Graffiti doesn't typically correlate directly to gang culture. I think it's a little off-putting to say that one reason for not considering Oaxaca long-term is because the servers aren't gracious enough to you. I think this is a trend I see a lot in your videos, that you do seem to have certain expectations of others based on your lived experiences in America. It's great when you can share a moment with a stranger, but because you're a gringo with a vlog camera doesn't mean everyone should see you as something unique.
Love your videos. My wife is una chilanga, I love going to Mexico and am always looking for new places to discover and I appreciate your perspective. Keep it up you guys are awesome
We love Cabo. But when we visited a few years back, many things, like dining, were more expensive than Newport Beach, CA. Can you give us an example of "affordable"?
@@cobblestone977 You can get a place that's nice for 8000-12000 pesos/month. Usually when I go out I spend 100-300 pesos I spend 500-1000 on groceries but I'm not really a fancy eater. I think the main thing is to look for happy hours and special nights with restaurants. Prices have come down a lot since the pandemic -- especially rent.
@Coco Chanel lol I'm not retired I'm a school teacher here. It's way cheaper than it was. Living in México, even though I need to have 2 jobs, even when it was super expensive I still found I had a better quality of life than I did in Canada. While the prices seem relatively the same the taxes you pay are considerably less.
Great channel. You guys are wonderful travel companions. I won't be able to travel anymore due to health issues, but it's nice to experience travel vicariously with you. All the best. Stay safe and healthy.
Did it ever occur to you that the weather in Oaxaca is so conducive to outdoor dining and also that rooftop terraces are a perfect way to social distance during Covid? Where would you prefer to eat and drink - sunny, warm and inviting rooftop deck or a dark, empty downstairs dining room? It sure appeared that you were enjoying yourselves with this new "craze." Also just curious, how often do you initiate a "Buenos Dias" or "Buenas Tardes" when walking down the street with your camera? It is seldom you'll not receive a warm reply.
Love everything about your channel. You compliment each other nicely. Your information is very helpful and interesting. So fun traveling around with you 2. WATCHING YOU IS A BLAST
Just to let you know, INEGI reports that the average server gets 28 pesos/hour, roughly $1.40/hour. By now, it must be well known that Americans pay 15%-18% at home, so why not pay that in Mexico?
Oaxaca had graffiti since the 90s at the same time a lot of mural artist, oaxaca centro is a purely turistic area and will be more expensive, the beauty of the state is actually in the small cities, there are beautiful towns in the sierra and tuxtepec area as well as the istmo de tehuantepec and the pacific cost which are not that turistic and very inexpensive since more of the food is pre-colonial. Oaxaca protest exist since the last 100 years, you can find them in Diego Rivera, Orozco and other famous painters art. and it is mostly the indigenous rights they struggle since the last century, but in reality it is a peaceful beautiful place.
You guys are living the life! I love it! I love Mexico and love experiencing it through your eyes. My husband and I love to bar hop and experience local food and drinks everywhere we go too. Thank you for giving us a little escape into such a beautiful country!
I lived in Mexico for two months last year. My girlfriend is from the mountains of Oaxaca. We didn’t really care for the city for a lot of the same reasons.
Since your Spanish is so good now, I reckon it would be a very good idea to strike conversations with the locals - store owners, older folks, even the local priests/nuns and ask about how things are looking regarding the graffitis, trends, safety, etc. I never look at the expat resources to get a pulse on such things, unless of course they’ve been living there for a while and truly immersed in the community (outside of the English-speaking gated communities). I would love to hear a little more, as this area is on my list of cities to explore! 🤔🤗 🇲🇽
I saw you guys at a restaurant near Santo Domino a week or two ago. I am from Ohio and I would agree about the prices raising. In 2015, the first time I came to Oaxaca it was much cheaper. However, if you're able to live 5-10 minutes outside of the centro, everything is still very cheap. I live just on the outside and I have a pretty nice two bedroom for 5500. However convenient it is looking online for a place, they are always much more expensive. Good luck!
Great video again. One friendly suggestion, is it possible to point the camera at the streets and the direction where you're going when you walk around town and the little alley ways? I think they would be great to look at. Thank you.
I'm planning a trip to Cozumel last week of June 2021. I hope you can help. How's the weather in June and can I land in Cancun and take a ferry to Cozumel? And where should I stay? Town? I don't know how it all works.
Thank you again for an excellent video, I so look forward to them every Saturday! I most am in love with your openness and honesty as you discover new things. Things are more expensive everywhere. I even noticed how priced have soared at COSTCO. I am in Portland Oregon USA
I agree with you about Oaxaca. There was a very trends brings in a restaurant who wouldn't deign to even look at me. I'm in Puerto Escondido. It's the opposite!
Thanks for the info. Love rooftop restaurants/bars. We will arrive in Oaxaca on 03/05 for retirement exploratory trip. Glad you shared you recent observations about the increased prices and uncomfortable vibe. We will also be staying in Huatulco, so I'm hoping that is better.
Here in Huatulco right now. It’s fantastic! Came here from Oaxaca City. A great visit, but I also felt the vibe. Would not want to live there. We live in San Miguel de Allende. Love it!
It IS such a shame that this place that you really liked, has changed so much that you no longer feel comfortable there. I agree it would no longer be in the running as a place for permanent settlement .
Thanks Jordan and Matty for another funny and informative video. Love your humor and honesty. Keep putting these videos out, I’m learning so much from you. I Can’t wait to explore my MX journey. Stay safe. Im sure that you will find the right place to call home
So happy your channel has surpassed 200k! I found your channel ~2years when i was researching places to visit in Mexico and their vegan options! I kept watching because I love how real and authentic you two are! No sugar coating or fakeness! Love that! Anywho, I know Maddie isn’t vegan anymore, but still love it when you point out places that have a good amount of vegan options or vegan restaurants you saw! There’s tons of resources online, but always nice to hear about on your channel too 😺. Just thought I’d throw it out there since I’d love to hear about what Oaxaca has for vegan options at some of these rooftop restaurants you two are visiting! That’s crazy how many there are! Stay well you too and thanks for such great content!
I love how you bar hopped, and by the last I'm going, how are the holding it together with all the food and drinks. Glad you had a good time in Oaxaca, but its sad on prices there. I guess it makes sense, since world only gets more expensive. I hear you, about wanting to be away from unhappy, unfriendly people, makes sense. Great video!
Oaxaca was a great place to live before the pandemic, but I have decided to leave since then. They had a huge tourism boom and rental prices got crazy.
Thank you for this video. We spent a few months in Oaxaca earlier this year and, thanks in part to your channel, are moving there this fall. Frankly people were INSANELY friendly when we were there, so maybe things have changed since you were there (it’s a tourist town so I’m sure the whole place was in shock and panic bc of the pandemic), and I wouldn’t have wanted people being more friendly or making small talk, etc. Also, I love graffiti of all kinds as well as protests. So I guess it’s the place for me!
I'm sure you've heard of Huatulco beach and Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca. If not you might want to check out those places. My friends say they are amazing. Stay safe and take good care of yourselves!!
Great video ! Thanks for sharing your reasons for not choosing Oaxaca. All of your reasons make sense and Mexico is a large country with so many places. I know you will find that perfect fit.
I thought Oaxaca was cheap for cocktails but that’s coming from Houston where 1 cocktails is usually $12-$15. I will say the city is a bit more expensive than the coast. Also we ate at restaurants that were higher end and paid atleast $100 less than in the US. If you are looking for cheap drinks you can find them at the sports bars. We had the opposite interactions with the locals. A bunch of thank you and hope to see you again.
My husband & I are going to Oaxaca for the first time in June for our anniversary. We know it’s known for the food. I hope we enjoy it as much as Merida & Puebla. Thank you for your video & truthfulness. God bless you both. 🕊♥️🙏🏼
Do you consult with other expats on these types of decisions? Just wondering. Also, I am very interested in visiting Oaxaca and recently read an article about how tourism in the time of Covid has been really challenging for the locals in that area. They want to be open for the local economy, but apparently many tourists are ignoring the mask rules, putting locals' health at risk.
Hello guys, I enjoy your videos. Some time ago you guys said that it was an error to live in Playa del Carmen or anywhere in RIVIERA Maya. You guys said you suggest Merida, Yucatan. I'm moving very soon. Do you still think the same way? If so, what neighborhood in Merida you suggest? I'm looking for a very small house. I'm avoiding apartments due to potential of noise issues.
@@TangerineTravels It would creep me out living in Mexico, longer term, based upon all that I have heard you say about the country's iffy side. I think you two are brave, actually. Love listening to your videos, as well. 🤙 👍

Oaxaca protest exist since the last 100 years, you can find them in Diego Rivera, Orozco and other famous painters art. and it is mostly the indigenous rights they struggle since the last century, but in reality it is a peaceful beautiful place.
where in Mexico is there the smoothest asphalt for skating?
If you ever make it to to Nashville, downtown is full of rooftop bars. Hopefully by the end of 2021 they will be safe to visit.
Oaxaca is my favorite state and, while I wouldn't live in the capital city, the valley has many pueblos which are peaceful and accessable
Thank you.
We’ll take that into consideration, thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing love rooftops can’t wait to visit 😍
I'm planning a trip to Cozumel last week of June 2021. I hope you can help. How's the weather in June and can I land in Cancun and take a ferry to Cozumel? And where should I stay? Town? I don't know how it all works.
Tangerine Travels: post a video
Me: immediately clicks to watch the video🙌
Thank you again for an excellent video, I so look forward to them every Saturday!
I most am in love with your openness and honesty as you discover new things.
Things are more expensive everywhere. I even noticed how priced have soared at COSTCO.
I am in Portland Oregon USA
I've noticed that you've been on a lot of rooftops. I think it's also awesome! You're right, it's often wasted space.
I love Mexico, end i love you both❤️❤️
Thanks Susan! Hugs :)
The more I see you guys, the more I like you. 😊 You guys are so much fun.
Aww thanks Misry!
Thanks for the tip on the Oaxaca coffee, ordered some it’s great.
Love that you have started calling out the trolls and vile ppl. Don't let them discourage you!
Do you have to wear make outside when you are not near people? Also are the beaches still open as I think they are closed in La Paz. Thank you
I agree with you about Oaxaca.
Love it!
I love your videos and always looking forward to watch the next one! 👍Thanks guys!
OMG the pink house in your intro is where we are staying at for a month!!
And your spanish is truly inspiring🇺🇸🇮🇹thank you
I love this little adventure over finding a home base. Its like a little sub-series television show haha.
I think the pandemic has affected how much people talk to each other😢
How is the internet speed in Oaxaca?
Really nice video. Love to wake up on Saturday morning with a new one from you all. Also, love how you caught the moon in the sky behind you.
Thanks for making us part of your Saturday mornings!
Hi is still have some place in mexico cowboy still like few place in texas or its only in the movies ? ♥️♥️
You’ll see lots more cowboy hat wearing in northern Mexico and parts of the country with ranches and haciendas.
we went to Oaxaca last year and it was grate a little hipster and so calm good vibs .keep up the good work
It IS such a shame that this place that you really liked, has changed so much that you no longer feel comfortable there. I agree it would no longer be in the running as a place for permanent settlement .
Oh my have fun. You two are being very funny. Stay safe. Love your boots. Beautiful views.
What constitutes a good price for a rental in Oaxaca?
Wow you guys have so much chemistry ❤️✨
Thanks Jordan and Matty for another funny and informative video. Love your humor and honesty. Keep putting these videos out, I’m learning so much from you. I Can’t wait to explore my MX journey. Stay safe. Im sure that you will find the right place to call home
Merry her already! She's perfect I love her smile, you two make a lovely couple
Zihuatanejo or Barra de Navidad would be fun places to do a show from 🌴
Oaxaca was a great place to live before the pandemic, but I have decided to leave since then.
We are at Berlina right now thanks to you guys!
I'm sure you've heard of Huatulco beach and Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca. If not you might want to check out those places. My friends say they are amazing. Stay safe and take good care of yourselves!!
price is going up world wide though
Great video ! Thanks for sharing your reasons for not choosing Oaxaca. All of your reasons make sense and Mexico is a large country with so many places. I know you will find that perfect fit.
Thanks Connie! We are very hopeful that one of our next 5 spots will be a good long-term fit for us 🤗
I thought Oaxaca was cheap for cocktails but that’s coming from Houston where 1 cocktails is usually $12-$15.
U liked?
Wow, I was in Oaxaca 2 yrs ago and fell in love with it. Such a shame it's changed. Hope to move to Mexico from Australia this year.
Are you talking about Oaxaca city or the state in general.
@@jctr4559 city.
Change is everywhere, it’s inevitable.
@@SombraLocs is it?
@@FlamencoOz I mean people can’t expect places to stay the same forever. Oaxaca City is still a beautiful city.
Great video ! rooftop bars are great , theres one i like to go to that is like 2 blocks from a huge lake and you get the best sunsets there !
I love the roads there! So beautiful
Hello guys,
I enjoy your videos.
Thank you for another great video! I love the joking with one another! much love to both of you
What was your magenta coloured cocktail called, Jordan? The one with the bamboo straw.
“Tentación” (Temptation in English)
@@TangerineTravels Thank you so much for such an expedient reply, Guys! The drink looked de-lush! 😋😋
@@TangerineTravels It would creep me out living in Mexico, longer term, based upon all that I have heard you say about the country's iffy side. I think you two are brave, actually. Love listening to your videos, as well. 🤙 👍
