I saw this in your curriculum choices and bought it. Best decision of the year. This is our first year homeschooling and all 5 of my kids are awful in English. We are 5 weeks in and they can actually identify a noun as well as other things! They couldn't do that 5 weeks ago. The sad part is they were top of the class in public school.
Honestly, this is the best grammar curriculum review I have seen yet! Thank you for not only showing us the INTERIOR pages, but also for showing us how the books are to be used. Your opinions on the curriculum's strengths and its compatibility with IEW are also very helpful. Subscribing to your channel now!
I'm so glad you did this review! I have a reluctant writer, so I've been trying to ease him into writing. Been thinking about using this next year when he's in third grade. It looks like it might be a good fit!
This was awesome! We've been using IEW writing, but I had not yet gotten started on the Grammar; busyness kept me procrastinating the climb up the learning curve (no matter how small). Your review has saved me a bunch of "figure it out" time; we'll be starting tomorrow!
Both my daughters use this program, it has been great! They had no prior knowledge of grammar as school didn't teach it. Will be continuing on for next year.
Have you posted an updated review on Fix It Grammar yet (you mentioned you may do that in your video (ie: how test scores look, etc))? Could you share the link if you have? I'd love to hear your thoughts as you've gotten further in the program! I have the books -- we're starting them today. We started IEW Writing in the fall.
I'm so excited to start this with my 3 kiddos. We are going to start this summer. This will be the only book work they will do in the summer. Then, we will continue on in the school year. I plan do all the levels, just year after year.
my 4th grader loves this program. he loves all of the iew programs. We do phonetic zoo and student writing intensive, as well. he loves loves loves it. the iew programs really do correlate well together. I'm quite pleased.
If a child is new to grammar is it ok to start in the Robinhood book. Or, is it better to start in the Nose Tree? I guess I'm asking if they go in order? Thanks!
Darn, wish I had known this before I ordered what I did! I bought English From the Roots up (just vocabulary) and it makes zero sense to me. IEW is something we're all ready familiar with and this would be vocabulary and grammar in one. I think I'm still going to get it, at least it's not very expensive. Thank you!!
I’m going to homeschool my 8th grader and am considering adding these books to our curriculum. Do you recommend starting with Level 1 for an 8th grader? Also you mentioned in your video “testing”. Do tests come with these materials or do you supplement other type of Grammar tests to track progress? I’m new to homeschooling, thank you in advance for your thoughts!
Level 1 might be too easy for an 8th grader, but if you've never done IEW Fix It before you might want ask them what they recommend for an older student.
Brave writer has one project per month (paragraph) but it has day to day assignments/activities each week. So they will work on the paragraph a little at a time each week, reading poetry, discussions, hands on activities.
How did you find doing it with younger kids and older kids at the same time? My youngest is 8 and my oldest I wanted to do it with is 13 but she is very hesitant to do the same grammar programme as her little brother. Do you skip through lessons quicker with your older ones or do they go the same pace as the youngest? Thank you
Hi, yes you can go faster if you want but we didn't, we just did one lesson per day. It works out with our schedule to get through one book per year. If your older student wants something different, you can always choose a different book for her to go through so she feels like she's doing something more challenging.
Thanks for this review!! I was leaning towards this or G.U.M. drops. I love that this has vocab built in the program as well. My 11 yr old and 13 yr old just finished Logic of English and it seems this will be perfect to use not that we are done with it. Going to use the placement test to see where my kids fall. You wouldn't consider this good for Writing as well would you? I know it has a little writing but do I assume it doesn't have enough to consider it Writing as well.
Thank you for taking the time to inform us about this program. After using it for some time, do you feel it's a full grammar program or did you find it needed a supplement to go with it? Thank you for taking the time to respond back:)
I feel like it's fine on it's own, we originally supplemented with vocabulary, but we eventually stopped because both the IEW writing and Fix It! Grammar have vocal and I think it's fine on its own.
Hi Erica! Thanks for this review! I have been using this with my 4th and 7th grader and it has been going well. The only thing I don't fully understand is how to grade it as there is not really a rubric for grading. How do you grade it? Thanks!
Grading for Fix It! Can be difficult. They encourage you not to grade the sentences they mark up, and if you have to grade something they suggest grading the final write up they do in their notebooks. I tend to grade the sentences because I want them to try and find everything. If they get 100, they get a prize so they have incentive to do well LOL!
Thank you for this review! My kiddo was in Saxon Grammar for 6 years and we got tired of it. I see you posted this in 2016. Do you still use it? Would you still recommend it? Thank you
Hi, I am new to this curriculum. Not to homeschooling but to IEW. I noticed the video was 3 yrs old. So I was just wondering if you ended up liking the curriculum fix it! Grammar. Did it end up working well? Just curious as I am thinking of buying it. I like the fact they can learn about nouns and pronouns and adjectives and such while also learning sentences and paragraphs structure.
Not necessarily, if you've used IEW before it will be easier to do the higher level books. I would give them a try and if your kids are struggling go down a book or 2. Each book contains instructions so they should be able to do them if they've had proper English classes already.
I know this is an old video, but would you have a recommendation for a 1st grader program? I am not sure if I understand correctly, would we start with the all about spelling, reading and writing? then by 3rd grade start grammar? Thanks!
For first grade, I start with All About Spelling Level 1 for spelling. I typically use Abeka for Language/Grammar for first-second. Then in third I move to IEW Fix it! for grammar.
I just started homeschooling my 1st grader. She has moderate autism and is delayed in certain areas. Grammar is a subject that is tough to teach. Do you know of any curriculum I could use? Thank you
I would go for something that is more hands-on for her. All About Spelling isn't a grammar curriculum but does have a lot of hands-on phonics practice that might help her out. You might also look at First Language Lessons. It's not a worksheet based curriculum, it's more of a reading/discussion type curriculum. I also have a community you can post this question to I'm sure others are in your situation and might be able to help more! community.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/
Is Fix It Grammar totally autonomous to the IEW SWI? I'm not starting SWI until 4th grade (next year), but I wanted to maybe start Fix It now, in 3rd grade, in order to avoid starting two new programs in the same year - but, I've been worried that Fix It will be confusing without the previous knowledge of the IEW SWI program. So, any who, any advice is helpful! :) Thanks!
Hi, You need the student workbook and the teacher workbook for this curriculum in my opinion. The kids edit the sentences, and I suppose you could write them out each day for your kids but that would be kind of a hassle.
I'm pretty sure if you buy the teacher's manual it comes with a free download for the student workbook. So you can always print it off yourself rather than buying the pre-printed, pre-bound one.
Yes, once they get going, I don't do much teaching. That said we meet at the end of the day and go over everything together to make sure they understand it all.
No, I use Abeka for my 2nd grader who is NOT doing Fix It at this time. I am not using anything in addition to Fix It! for my older 3 students at this time.
I wouldn't. he needs a more in depth program before beginning this. I would go with "first language lessons, level 1". it's a very thorough program that will give your child a very in-depth grasp of English grammar.

My son absolutely loves this program. He was very behind in grammar and this program has been a exactly what we needed
Just wondering if you still love this. Your reviews are so helpful. Your bright and clear videos are a pleasure to watch.
We love this program..middle and high 👍
I'm so glad you did this review! I have a reluctant writer, so I've been trying to ease him into writing. Been thinking about using this next year when he's in third grade. It looks like it might be a good fit!
Thank you for the review. It was perfect timing for me, I just received my Fix It Grammar book last night. Now I understand how to use it!
This was awesome! We've been using IEW writing, but I had not yet gotten started on the Grammar; busyness kept me procrastinating the climb up the learning curve (no matter how small). Your review has saved me a bunch of "figure it out" time; we'll be starting tomorrow!

I haven't posted an update on it yet, but we really like it so far and plan to continue with it next year.

This has been so helpful! The current grammar curriculum that we are using really isn't working that well, so I am going to check this out!

Yay! Thank you! I'm looking forward to seeing your IEW writing review!!!

would this cover everything a child needs to learn for Language Art? or would I need to supplement with something else?
thanks
You would still need reading, writing and spelling. I recommend All About Reading for Reading though :)
I’m going to homeschool my 8th grader and am considering adding these books to our curriculum. Do you recommend starting with Level 1 for an 8th grader? Also you mentioned in your video “testing”. How do you feel about the magical elements. I am a bit concerned about it but it seems like just a great curriculum. Thanks for the video+
What do you mean magical elements?
Nice! Have you used Brave Writer? I would love to see a review on her products. Thanx for sharing!
I'm sorry I've never used that curriculum.
Brave writer has one project per month (paragraph) but it has day to day assignments/activities each week. So they will work on the paragraph a little at a time each week, reading poetry, discussions, hands on activities.

HI Kelley, we use the IEW Writing units along with the Fix It! Grammar. I don't consider Fix It! Grammar a writing curriculum :)
Thank you for taking the time to inform us about this program. After using it for some time, do you feel it's a full grammar program or did you find it needed a supplement to go with it? Thank you for taking the time to respond back:)

Thanks for this review! I had been wondering about this program. I just ordered it for my 4th grader :)
Do they rewrite the sentence each day in there notebook? Or do they rewrite on Day 4? Thanks..
I have them rewrite it everyday, but I think you can do whatever you
prefer. I was a little confused on that in the instructions.

Yes, we LOVE Fix It! Grammar and still use it today!
Please do a video on IEW writing
I have a middle schooler and high schooler. I bought books 3 and 5. Should I have gotten book 1 first????
Not necessarily, if you've used IEW before it will be easier to do the higher level books. I would give them a try and if your kids are struggling go down a book or 2. Each book contains instructions so they should be able to do them if they've had proper English classes already.

Yes, you can do them separately. They do however use similar terminology and teaching style so they go together nicely.
Would it work to buy only the teacher book and have the children only work out of the notebook?
Hi, You need the student workbook and the teacher workbook for this curriculum in my opinion. The kids edit the sentences, and I suppose you could write them out each day for your kids but that would be kind of a hassle.
I'm pretty sure if you buy the teacher's manual it comes with a free download for the student workbook. So you can always print it off yourself rather than buying the pre-printed, pre-bound one.
If I can only afford one right now would the grammar or writing programs be better
How old are the kids who are doing this curriculum?
Thanks for the reviews
Hi, they have Fix It! Grammar for grades 3-12, if you check their website you'll see all of their different levels.
Does this also have diagraming sentences?
Does this fully replace an English program like BJU English 3?
Hi, Yes, Fix It! Grammar replaces our English, but we also add in the IEW writing program because Fix It! Is only the grammar side of things.
Can students use this curriculum independently? Especially at the upper levels?
Yes, once they get going, I don't do much teaching. That said we meet at the end of the day and go over everything together to make sure they understand it all.
Do you need to add Spelling curriculum in addition to Fix It! Grammar and IEW Writing for a 5th grader? If so, what do you recommend?
Yes, we use Spelling You See: bit.ly/2tGyzTT
really interesting format
Could you use this as an independent curriculum for Language Arts?
Yes!
@@erica_arndt awesome! Thank you!!
When do you suggest using fix it grammar ? Before, after or at the same time as the iew writing?
We use it at the same time, and I believe the suggest starting it in 3rd grade.
What agenwould you start implemting grammar?
I start this at 3rd grade.
Do you do this along with abeka language?
No, I use Abeka for my 2nd grader who is NOT doing Fix It at this time. I am not using anything in addition to Fix It! for my older 3 students at this time.
Can I use this for my 1st grader?
I wouldn't. he needs a more in depth program before beginning this. I would go with "first language lessons, level 1". it's a very thorough program that will give your child a very in-depth grasp of English grammar.
We are on lesson 3 in first language lessons book 1 so far so good. Thank you!
I love that series of grammar books. It's amazing
I wouldn't, it's meant for 3rd grade and up.
What would I need to add besides spelling and reading to make this a complete LA curriculum?
For elementary I would just add in spelling and reading and that's it! Once you get to high school you'd also want to add in a literature program.
Erica Arndt what about writing?
We use IEW Student Writing Intensive, then move on to their theme based writing units when done with that.
I just ordered the SWI-A fingers crossed
Thank you so much❤
Thank you!
What grades did you use this?
They start in 3rd grade and up.
Does anyone know how many weeks does it take to complete?
The units have about 33 weeks in them
