Based on the X-Men comic book, it is the first fighting game produced by Capcom using characters under license from Marvel Comics. Released around the time of the mid-1990s X-Men animated series, the game features voice actors from the series reprising their roles. The game's plot is based on the "Fatal Attractions" story from the comics - players control one of the X-Men or their enemies in their fight against the villain Magneto. They face each of the other characters in the game in best of three one-on-one fighting matches, before battling Juggernaut and Magneto.
The gameplay has much in common with Capcom's previous fighting games, Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Darkstalkers. Children of the Atom adds a combo system that features long combos that can even be performed in mid-air. Also featured in the game are various tactical maneuvers, including the ability for characters to roll. Children of the Atom introduced multi-tiered fighting environments in which the ground would crumble and characters would fall into lower parts of the level. These concepts and the fast pace of the game would provide the basis for Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom series, which started with the game's successor X-Men vs. Street Fighter.

Also, that reminds me of how much I miss the carefully crafted character endings in 90's arcade fighters, complete with pixel art and animation. Each character had their own signature backgrounds, adding to their uniqueness. It was also great that most of these games could be played as single-player experiences.
They slowly started to deteriorate until all we'd get is a "Congratulations!" or something.
Fighting games today not at level of 90's Capcom.
These were extremely well written/loaclized for an arcade game form the mid 90's. The dialogue matches their personas and isn't generic sentences.
They even managed to get the voice actors from the cartoon show. Wolverine and Storm are still going strong in X-Men ‘97

In some sense, Magneto's dialogue with some characters in their endings is very sad.
Magneto actually just wanted a better world for mutants, but sadly with a extremist view against humans[and he wasn't totally wrong about humans tho].
Definitely inspired by the Jim Lee run of the comics

Back when Capcom actually gave a crap. Probably took a lot of effort for the Mojo and Jean Grey sprites (if you want to call them that) and they were just cameos.
Much more effort than MVC2 and Infinite for sure. Those couldn’t even put in a text + image ending like MVC3.

If Jean Grey were playable....
Her ending would be trying to persuade Magneto to give up his insane vendetta against humanity. As he refuses, Jean Grey races back to join her fellow teammates.
Returning home, she, Psylocke and Storm stop an attack by Juggernaut.
That would be a rematch canon Fight for Magneto, he only lose against Jean...

So his ending further proves Iceman was/is not gay....his first thought after all the mayhem was to go to the beach and hang with some babes....
We all know Jean Grey gave him telepathic conversion therapy. It's even referenced here and there in the comics (but they suck now, so nobody read those)
Ice man was never gay til the crazies starting infecting marvel and interjected crap in the comics

That's like making Human Torch gay. Just make new characters!! That was 100% a corporate decision to market to gay people. The ones who like comics were already reading!
