Does Captain America: The First Avenger Stand The Test Of Time?

  • It feels to me that the term “superhero movie” used to be a subgenre that could take on many forms. For example, Logan was a Western epic with super-powered characters at the core, but the tone was nothing like any of the other X-Men films of years passed. Or the way that Constantine gave us a dark horror-thriller with demons and monsters but kept the detective-slash-noir aesthetic and allowed it to bleed through. But, these days it feels like nearly all of the caped cinema we’re getting fits into the same all-encompassing, mass appealing mega-genre that has really started to feel the same across every film- With the rare exception of films like “The Batman” or Marvel’s recent “Werewolf By Night”, there’s been a frustrating lack of variety in the tones of modern comic book cinema- But back in 2011, Marvel was in the infancy of building out there now-dominating connected universe by way of introducing different characters in their own films, before crossing over into one giant blockbuster event with Marvel’s Avengers.
    With Iron Man already being two films in, and Thor and the Hulk being introduced in their own outings, it was time for Kevin Feige and the folks as Marvel Studios to wind the clocks back to 1942 and introduce audiences to one of the MCU’s most iconic heroes- in Captain America: The First Avenger.

    Howard was Tony's father, not his grandfather. As for Red Skull, he needed more scenes to be vicious. I enjoy it.

    the movie literally explains why Steve ends up a Bonds Sales Gimmick in neon letters.
    Did this guy actually watch the damn film? If you can't get those basic details right, I have to guess, no.

    You can see how Joe Johnston's Rocketeer influence the style and tone of Captain America. Hugo Weaving was awesome as Red Skull.

    This is quite an overlooked entry in the MCU. Joe Johnston made the Marvel version of "The Rocketeer" and it's a really solid origin story.

    I love this movie. It was great in 2011, and its still great now. The cast was amazing, from Chris Evans to Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell and Dominic Cooper. Tommy Lee Jones was great as Colonel Phillips, and Stanley Tucci was also memorable as Abraham Erskine, even though his scenes were limited. There were some great supporting characters too, like Bucky Barnes, Dum Dum Dugan, and Arnim Zola. I loved the fights between Cap and the Red Skull, and was truly disappointed when Hugo didn't return for the Avengers sequels. But overall, it remains a highly entertaining film, and I give it a 9/10.

    I think the main reason they didn’t have Steve immediately go into battle is because all of the serum was destroyed and he was the only backup

    • @Moviefan2k4
      @Moviefan2k4 7 місяців тому +17

      Phillips said it himself: "I asked for an army, and all I got was you. You are not enough." He was disparaging Steve, but in his own way he did have a point. Even with the serum, the odds of Steve beating Schmidt alone were very slim. That's why he needed help from Bucky, Peggy, Phillips, and the Howling Commandos.

    A great origin story that beautifully captures Steve's innocent heroism and like someone here wrote adorable "lack of cynicism". It will stand the test of time and even be one of the few MCU movies worth remembering in a few decades.
    And his character culminates in "Endgame" when he stands alone against an impossible force and just straps his shield tighter ready to engage. One of the greatest scenes ever. 👍

    They get a couple of things wrong here. Howard Stark is not Tony's grandfather, he's his father. And the question of why don't the military use Cap other than putting him on stage is addressed in the movie when Tommy Lee Jones states that he was promised an army, and all he got was one soldier. Cap became to valuable to risk as he is the only source of the Super Soldier Formula.

    I was never a big Cap fan as a kid, but this was undoubtedly my favorite Avengers origin movie. I just loved the WW2-era setting. If I could change anything about the film, I would make it 30 minutes longer, as the third act seemed a bit rushed. Could've used more Cap vs. Red Skull. I actually liked this more than Winter Soldier.

    I thought the Red Skull was one of the best and most grounded villains. Also, in the movie he wasn't a Nazi. It was pointed out that he was an ex SS officer who wanted to created his own retro futuristic army in order to take on both the Allies AND the Nazis. I also liked the WWII setting. Being someone who watched loads of WWII movies as a kid, it came across as a WWII movie with a superhero, one where they went as far as including real life Nazi experimental weapons like the Triebflügel VTOL interceptor and the giant Landkreuzer super tank. Quite genius, connecting these drawing board experimental weapons with Red Skull and Hydra.

    Why is a person that’s not a fan of the character giving his thoughts about how well the film holds up now? Why am I supposed to care about what you think? The film is a great character study that remains true to the character in the comics. Watching this film, I felt the studio respected the source material and was not afraid to embrace it, flaws and all. Bad opinion piece. 🤮

    I remember review were mixed but favored. I really liked it and loved that they got Joe Johnston who directed The Rocketeer. The only thing I ddin't like was the Hydra Soldiers using energy weapons which they should have stuck to machine guns. I understand they used the tesseract to make the weapons but it just felt out of place.

    I absolutely love CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Sure, it has some dull parts to it. But overall, it's a great movie.
    In this fan's opinion, Joe Johnston was the prime choice to direct. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER has the same feel as another movie he directed - THE ROCKETEER, another Disney movie from the 1990s.

    Great video.
    They had 2 choices when deciding to make this movie.
    1. “Real” World War 2 Superhero movie
    OR
    2. Fantasy World War 2 Superhero movie.
    They went with number 2.
    But for the sequels they went way harder

  • @sfkeepay
    @sfkeepay 7 місяців тому

    Is this video deliberately obtuse? Or did the author(s) not actually watch the film? 1. The “uncanny valley” concerning pre-serum Steve Rogers is highly subjective but still manages to sound more like cynicism than legitimate criticism. 2. The claim that the movie doesn’t “get going” until after Rogers is transformed ignores the essential context it constructs, as well the entire excellent performance of Stanley Tucci. 3. The disbelief and confusion expressed around using Captain America as a propaganda tool instead of using him for combat, which was clearly explained in the movie 4. The implication that you can only really “make a difference” in war by fighting in it, and 5. Describing Howard Stark as Tony Stark’s “grandfather” when he’s actually Tony’s father.
    p.s. Some smaller negative points: 1. starting a sequence describing the conclusion of the film with footage from the middle of it 2. Saying “finally having his final battle” which is pure lousy, lazy writing.

    Captain America was very much of his time & created for WW2. An iconic comic book cover is Cap punching H@tler. I was surprised they chose this character for the MCU since he would seem so dated to modern audiences but was equally pleasantly surprised how well they integrated him into the present. A man out of his time. Sure, it's been done before in scifi shows like Buck Rogers but it worked & he bacame a good character who juxtaposed Tony Stark. The earnest Boyscout to Stark's snarky cynicism which would later divide The Avengers. I enjoyed Cap's debut film.

    the 2nd and 3rd movies of this trilogy are arguably the two best in the MCU franchise history, so this one naturally has trouble competing with that...if I'm honest this is my least favorite of MCU phase 1 movies. Thor 1 is the most underrated of that group.

    It's been a while since I've watched this one, but I remember just liking it at the time.
