Thank you so much for your time in sharing these exercises. I recently broke my fibula “June 12,2023” and just had surgery “June 16, 2023” a day before my birthday 🤦🏽♀️…So yea this has been some interesting birthday for me. I am currently in my 2nd week of recovery and just had my cast removed from my doctor yesterday. It is really such a difficulty to even get my right foot at a 90 degree angle😫..I have the resistance band and when I tell you it feels like there is a wall or block on the top of my foot when I began to try to push my foot at 90 degrees, lol…I haven’t started physical therapy yet but Im going to start it at home for now doing your exercises until my doctor has me go. 🙏🏽 My recovery ❤️🩹 goes very well, Im in my 30’s so hopefully 🤞 things don’t seem so long because it already seems like a long way to recovery
These have been the most helpful videos I have seen. My doctor offered for me to do PT at home so I wouldn’t have to miss work. This has given me such wonderful guidance and has helped improve my range of motion so much. Thank you for giving me hope in healing and for such great, informational videos!
J and j Moments - Thank you for your kind comments. I’m glad these videos have been of some help, and you range of movement is improving. Good luck with your recovery and I hope it’s not too long before you’re fully restored!
Eight weeks after my broken and dislocated ankle, and seven weeks since the ORIF surgery, Starting to try to weight bear, and persevering with online physiotherapy (still awaiting NHS referral). It is painful and progress is slow; I take great comfort from watching your journey, thank you for sharing it.
Thanks a ton for you for uploading your journey. I am two weeks through the surgery. I have a Bimalleolar fracture. Your videos give me hopes. My doctor has told me that in my post op appointment i will be put in the boot. I cannot wait for the transition. But if one thing these tough times teaches us is patience. Thank you again. These videos give me hope.
@@NewSlangSlinger 9 months later I feel fine and able to walk, sometimes it hurts to walk and I am strangely feeling the screws now n then and my feet is swilling up if I stand for too long but other than that I’m fine. I wish u a quick recovery as possible!!
Hi thank you so much for putting your exercises on UA-cam, I have been following you exercises and ky ankle is doing well I found out that my doctor didn't allocate me a physiotherapist as I had to call the hospital up he forgot so with that I'm so glad you did this or I would tell waiting for an appointment keep up the good work 😁👍
Could have lost a foot. Open fracture weber B spiral. Surgery within three hours of accident. Fibula nailed. This happened April 10th 2021. Watched your videos while in non weight bearing stage, I'm turning 68 very soon. 10 weeks later and I'm nordic hiking (slowly and not extreme trails). Walking without limp now, but going slower than normal. Today did two loops, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Total time 50 minutes. Ankle is swollen some and still causes pain while walking. Just don't over do it. I tell my ankle to relax when walking, it helps. Doing medical grade red-light on area everyday. Started walking the sandy beach barefoot a few days ago (10 to 15 minutes). Bone has healed, lots of soft tissue damage to work through. Massaging area with Aspercream/ Arthritis Hot daily now. After getting out of the hard cast, the surgeon sent me home and told me to start wearing normal shoes. No brace, no walking boot. Used a cane for a couple weeks. No swimming yet. When I get the ok, I'll be doing deep water aerobics. Ankle is still sore, stiff and weak, but it's getting better slowly. Hoping to be somewhat 'normal' in a couple of months. What I thought would be 6 weeks most likely will be 6 months.
@@DMG118 Watching his stuff again right now. I'm close to 3 months out now. In my late 60's. I look at my injury/ dilemma as a training program. The ankle is still stiff, sore and weak. I get out and do stuff as much as I can anyways. Part of my rehab is Nordic hiking (easy stuff) total of 50 minutes a day along with walking barefoot on the sandy beach for 10 to 15 minutes. Should get the ok on the 30th to go back in the water. Plan on doing deep water exercises everyday. My job right now is rehab and I must continue making my films !!!
Your video has been inspired for me, thank you for uploading, done surgery on 15 may cast 6 weeks now trying to learn to walk.thank you for uploading again.
@leon I am 8 weeks after exact same injury and surgery now and still unable to walk with full weight in a boot without pain. Very discouraged but i Keep on doing my therapy. Let me know how you progress. By the way my surgery was May 27th.
Hey buddy, I appreciate the videos of your journey through ankle fusion. It’s been so terrifying knowing that I have to go for an ankle fusion sometime in early March 2024, You are a comical engineer lol I appreciate your educational and inspirational videos. Thank you so much and God bless.
Thank you and your grandson for making and posting your recovery. I watched all your videos and do the part 2 exercises at home while I'm in physical therapy also. Your videos have helped me from the start. Thank you! Thank you!
Hi! My injury is a bi-malleolar fracture and dislocation 9 weeks ago. I’m in Spain. Great operation and physio is available but my Spanish is bad still! Your videos have been an inspiration. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for these videos! They really help me with the stress. I just got stiches removed and the second cast was put on (2 weeks after surgery) and I had the same injury you did. This gives me hope! ❤
Hey there your exercises are amazing! I remember telling you that 2 weeks ago i couldn't walk without tripping! I stopped like you said and gave it a break. I tried again 2 weeks later and now i can walk! God bless you and thank you. I will be continuing my exercises with exercise 7 in mind now and try the others a bit later.
Great videos , Im just about to get my cast off in next 2 days and your vids have being great encouragement during the depressing bits of this injury , now comes hard bit it seems the getting back to walking , thanks again
Thank you, I'm glad the videos have helped. It'll feel great getting rid of that cast, but just make sure you do the exercises the doctor/physio set for you - that was the best piece of advice I was given. Good luck!
I'm 58 years old and I broke my ankle in 2019. I was just entering into my third year of remission after a hard battle with Lung Cancer in which I received Chemotherapy AND Radiation treatments. The reason I point this out is to let you know that I have Chemo Induced Peripheral Neuropathy. I had pretty much beat it back with strenuous exercise, but after breaking this ankle, then being bedridden for so long has brought the Neuropathy back with a vengeance (blood-flow is the key). I went to a physical therapist and did exercises at home. The hardware was impeding my movement and quite often caused intense cold, so I had the original surgeon remove the hardware exactly 1 year later. He couldn't remove 2 screws on the inside of my ankle because the bone had grown over the head of the screws (In 1 year? The human body is AMAZING!) I then saw an ankle specialist and exactly 2 years after the original break, the specialist removed the remaining screws. My question to you is this: How are you doing today? Do you limp? Do you have a lot of pain and if so, is it continuous? I understand that I've now had 3 surgeries, but I'm wondering if you have pain each and every day as I do? When I get out of bed in the morning, I absolutely can NOT walk on this damn thing! It takes at least 15 minutes of limping around before it gets to the point where I can walk normally - the ankle specialist tells me this is called 'startup'. After walking around somewhat normally and without a limp for a few hours, the pain forces me to sit down. If I sit down for just a few minutes, walking on it again is like starting all over again just like when I get out of bed in the morning, but with more pain. So I'm curious how things are for you? Did they improve? How long did it take? Do you have something like 'startup'? I just can't get any straight answers from the doctors and I'm getting very frustrated, so I search the internet high and low for any information I can find. Thank you in advance and if I don't hear from you again, I wish you all the best. Live the best life that you can!
Hello nyphrodel - you're having a tough time! To answer your questions, I have almost made a full recovery. I have 99% of the movement I had, so I can't complain. I doubt I will get to 100%. The only thing I notice is that when I have been inactive for a while, for example sitting down, I have a limp for a few steps when I start to move, and then everything frees up. I don't have any pain now. Altogether it took about 15-18 months for me to get to where I am now. I do hope things improve for you soon.
Thanks so much for all your very helpful advice. Am just on 3 weeks post ORIF of trimalleolar fracture & it's so useful to see your progress especially the exercises
Me too! Fully casted until the end of July. Great video! I got a little squeamish watching you get on your tippy toes! Eek! I will be a good patient and will work hard to do what I must! I’ve never been laid up like this! Whew!
@ClassicRoyal Same here! For me, the toe scrunching looks difficult 😐 😳 I'm only 2 weeks post-op trimalleolar fracture, dislocation, and syndesmosis ligament rupture. I've been trying to first focus on regaining movement in my toes. My ankle is as stiff as a board.
This is incredibly helpful. I’m in San Antonio, Texas, and have the same injury as you. My surgeon just graduated me to WBAT (weight bearing as tolerated) with a CAM boot (which I will henceforth refer to as a moon boot - that moniker is much more fun!). These exercises have been an excellent supplement to the range of motion workout offered up by my PT. It is encouraging to watch you progress as you offer practical tips - A+ for providing us inspiration and education! I recommend adding a tall compression sock and tennis shoe insert when wearing the boot! Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, and greetings to all from Texas.
Hello AG - I'm afraid I'm a little off the pace with my replies at the moment, but I'm catching up! I'm glad the videos have been of some use, and I wish I'd had your tip about a tall compression sock. I hope your recovery is advancing swiftly and your moon boot is having a really good workout. We've got a full moon tonight where I am in Tynemouth, UK, so I'll have a close look to see if I can spot you!!! Best wishes.
Awesome video I had ORIF surgery on my right ankle I'm up to the physio part of my recovery got my resistance band last week this video is very helpful thank you. 🙂
Hello Renee. Minus 4C here yesterday and I could feel my ankle was a bit tight, bet it's a bit warmer where you are. Hope your recovery is going well, just be patient and follow the physio's instructions when you get to that point. Oh, and don't let the dogs rush you into walks until you're ready!!!
I have this same thing going on ..the outside of my leg has a plate and 5 screws and theres another plate on the inside of the ankle that has 2 screws...I was just referred to physical therapy after 7.5 weeks after surgery...very detailed and very well explained ...thank you for sharing..hope your feeling better soon! (shattered ankle and tibula and fractured the fibula)
Thankyou for these videos they have given me some hope after feeling extremely anxious about the recovery. Sometimes I feel like I'm never gonna walk again! I get my cast off Friday and into the moonboot. Hopefully my progress will be as great as yours. Thanks again and I hope things are going well!
So helpful. Adding exercises to my PT regime except number 7 as havnt been approved to walk without boot. Right now only doing my exercises once daily. Want to up to twice a day like yourself on the rainy days don't go outside for a walk in boot and walker/rollatot
Thank you so much! Your exercises are fantastic and i believe helped removed some of the pain i had been experiencing in my left fractured ankle. I will be giving the rest of the other exercises ago too.
Hello Tami - the exercises really helped me. My physio told me to do them daily, but I ended up doing them three times each day - I'm not sure if that was right or not, but it helped but I'm sure it did me no harm.
@@aalmangleye6502 i am giving it a go. You walk so well. I tried walking and was limping very badly however it was only my first day. How were you when you tried walking your first day?
@@taminorman1673 Hello Tami - in the video I was using the moonboot about 7 weeks after my accident and was surprised at the progress I had made. Everyone is different and I think I was a bit lucky at how well I progressed. I do remember shortly after coming out of hospital when I had my cruches and I was feeling over confident. I decided to go to my local chocolatier for my daily fix of his excellent hot chocolate (today's was particularly good!). This was a mistake. It usually only takes me less than 10 minules to stroll there, but it took me forever and I didn't think I would make it back home. I had to make so many stops as I was exhausted. It taught me a lesson not to overextend myself, so I didn't. I pushed doing my exercises but never went too far. I think if yoyu keep doing the exercises you'll be surprised at how quickly you can make progress. Good luck.
This is super helpful, I had the same injury as yours on Sept 13th last month, Gonna see the doctor this week to check whether I could start to do weight bearing and start these exercises at home. I hope you are doing great and healthy, cheers.
Thanks for these series of your great recovery process videos. I have my 4th finger and a few of my metatarsals fractured on my right foot about 3 weeks ago. Well the towel scrunching excercise is a bit challlenging for me as my 4th finger can't really curve much but i still can move it
Thank you so much for making videos on your recovery process, it really helps me and others. I now find myself in the same situation as you back in 2018, with a trimalleolar fracture. 46 days have passed since my ORIF surgery and yesterday I got the OK from my doctor to start using my right foot. I can only put 10 or 15 kilograms of weight on it at the moment and my ankle feels very rigid and hurts like hell if I'm not careful with it. I don't have a moonboot just yet and use my foot directly on the ground, but after watching your video it seems one could help me a lot to get better stability and confidence. If you still answer here, how did you deal with the pain the first days/weeks of using the foot? In my case, can barely put 15 or so kilograms on my foot and it starts hurting.
Hello Laurentiu, hope you are managing a bit better. I was lucky to have a moonboot, but was prescribed painkillers by the doctor. I tried not to use them and only did on a couple of occasions. There is a lot of soft tissue damage and that takes quite a few months to heal, for me that was what hurt the most. I still used my crutches to take most of the weight when I first used the moonboot.
@@aalmangleye6502 Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it! I'm doing much better now since I last posted on your video, the progress is there on both mobility and pain (baby steps). I'm still struggling of course with the rigidity of the ankle and actually, some of your exercises explained in your videos are helping in that regard. The doctor also prescribed some painkillers but I try not to rely on them. I got an appointment with a physiotherapist next week so until then your videos are really my starting point for recovery. Next week my doctor also wants to remove a screw (from a total of 11), the biggest one in there. Gonna be an interesting week I guess. On a side note, I saw your part 3 of your recovery the other day, on how you fractured your ankle. By some random coincidence, I got my fracture of the right ankle with an electric scooter, hitting down a sidewalk...
@@LordICEro Hello Laurentiu - apologies for the late reply. Hope you are making good progress with your recovery. I'm afraid I've been banned from scooters though I must confess to looking at them on the internet when no one's been looking!
Thank you so much for your terrific videos! You give me much hope. I went out and bought a stretch band. I can't do all the exercises yet as i'm only into my 2nd week of 25% weight bearing until i move onto 50%. I have a Biomalla fracture (that's spelt wrong lol). If i can walk again at 99% by the time it is time again i will be happy.
Hello Tami - apologies for not replying sooner, I've been busy working on a couple of projects and I'm just around to catching up on emails. I'm glad the videos have been of some use to you. The best advice I got was to do the physio I was given. I'm sure following that helped me a lot. Hope you get to 100% recovery!
I had a severe ankle fracture and had an orif surgery done..i broke mine nov.21..and jan24.my cast came off..no aircast no physiotherapy...just did alot of self therapy with videos i got off youtube..by feb14 i was walking and back at work..not fully recovered but i was able to make thru the day..took almost 3mbts afterwards to fully recovered..so everybody thats goin thru this..keep ur head up..its hard but u will recover
During the time you were doing †here exercises, at what point did you start walking outside and going places? When you did start walking some distances did your ankle hurt initially? I am having some pain on the inner ankle now that I am walking and trying to figure out if it's normal or if anything I wrong. I will get it checked out ut I was curious about when you started walking and if you had pain when you did. Thank you very much, your series is the best on UA-cam.
Hello, I suffered the same injury and on same foot. If you don't mind me asking, may I know when did you start driving? I'm on 6th week now post surgery and been slowly recovering. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you for this!!! I had the same exact injury and haven’t been to therapy, my doctor hasn’t suggested it, how did you transition from issuing crutches to walking, I can not get a hang of it!
Hello Katina. The move from crutches to walking was really helped with the moonboot and physio exercises. Using the crutches and moonboot helped give me confidence by being able to put a little more weight on my ankle while still being supported by the crutches. The moonboot gave a lot of support and the exercises really started to improve strength and flexibility. Little by little this gave me confidence to try a step or two without the moonboot and things just went from there. The danger I suppose is overconfidence so I was constantly being reminded by family not to overdo things!!! Good luck with your recovery.
I moved quite easily from two crutches to one. Just use the one crutch on the side of your good leg so that it is in sync with your injured leg and shares the load as you walk. I can now walk slowly with no crutches at all (I am 7 weeks post injury/surgery), but my ankle is very stiff so I have to ankle short steps. I can go faster when wearing the boot or using one crutch, but I can walk on my bare foot which is great.
Thank you sir for your videos I have a question . my sergeon told me to start wt bearing as tolerated but iam in so much pain and I realized that you walk right away after taking off the cast did it hurt when you put wt on it does PT help you to bear wt ? I am now 8 weeks post surgery
Thanks so much for these videos. I’ve had the same injury and am six weeks post surgery. Appointment with Doctor next week to see if ready for physical therapy. I do still notice the foot gets red/purple when I take a shower, etc. did you notice anything similar?
Hello Larry, I didn't notice any red/purple changes when taking a shower though I did have discolouration on my shin - still have it today! Hope all goes well with your appointment.
I have two incisions. Outside one is 12cm and the inside one is about 6. I've had a lot of trouble out of my inner one. It stings and burns even though the wound seems to be closed. Though it gets better if I move my ankle
My ankle still stiffens when I've been sitting for a while and it takes a few steps to loosen up. I'm 17 months on, so I guess this is how it's going to be. The doctor did say it was highly likely I would eventually have arthritis in my ankle, but I'm hoping that's a while yet!!!
I'm about 2 weeks post-op and I can't wait to get out of this cast, it's far too itchy. I was told I'll be put into something removable so I can bathe properly, so I wonder if that's the moon boot. Your videos give me peace of mind now that I know what's to come in my recovery. Thank you
Hello Ant, yes the moon boot was great when I got rid of the cast. It's removeable which is fantastic aster the cast, but gives great support when it's on.
Don’t know where you’re from, but I’m in South Carolina- cast came off after about 10 days when stitches came out. Have some good lotion- like Lubriderm- handy because your leg will be dry and flaky! It’s great to finally scratch the itch. Now in removable boot and doing some flexibility exercises. Sure feels weird with the hardware but this video helped me reframe my over ambitious expectations. Thank you for the video🤗
hello, I live in Turkey, trimalleolus is broken, there are thirteen screws and two plates, it has been two months and three weeks since surgery, my problems are that the joint opening is not good, the stiffness has decreased, but I am doing limited pedal movement, will it always stay like this and there is a glitch in walking, exactly when did you get better? Good luck to you too, how are you now?
Thank you for sharing . I also had same problem I am lying in the bed and doing those exercices . I still did't remove the sutura of the surgery on 2 of November I will get an X ray for sure .
I am surprised that you were able to beeven partially weight bearing after 6 weeks... my doc won't let me out any weight at all at 6 weeks post op and plans to start physical therapy at 8 weeks.
Hello., I had same think done like you. After four weeks in the boot I still struggling to walk without crutches. Struggling with making proper steps like you did after four days. Even I am pushing myself hard with excersices and practicing walking. Still painfull top of the feet. What type of pain did you get ? Thanks
Hello Algirdas - hope your recovery is going well. I had pain and stiffness all around my ankle for quite some time. Stretching exercises helped, as did the compression band I wore which kept swelling down and gave me some support.
My fracture (left ankle) occurred on 10/30/19. I was going down my outside apt stairs. It was raining moderately but there was like standing water on the stairs. Caused my foot to get caught when I fell down HARD onto my back. Immediately saw that my ankle didn't look right. Pain was excruciating. Had same surgery on 11/07/19. Started pt on 01/09/19. ROM is finally improving but I've got to focus more on my calf stretches. Just started walking but it's more of a hobble..very heavy limp. When does the natural gait become easier? Doesn't hurt. I just struggle to do it as if my brain doesn't remember how to walk normally.
Hello Kimmie, glad you're up and about. Do the physio and you'll find a little improvement every day. I'm 99.9% recovered, but I think the last bit isn't going to happen now. I find if I'm stationary for a while it takes a step or two before I'm walking properly. It's nothing really, but I notice it. You're right though, it does take a little while to walk normally as the muscles have wasted and although the bones may have healed, there could still be considerable ligament and tissue damage that can take months to heal.
Hello from Albania, thank you for sharing your experience, I have 9 weeks from my surgery, I walk on a crutch but I have knee pain.did you have this problem?
Thankyou for this insight. Im in your position now, so to see what recovery looks like at certain timepoints is helping me prepare. Did you have any symptoms post-op? Muscle spasms?
Hello Tiffany - please accept my apologies for the late reply, I've just been so busy I'm a bit behind with my replies. Hope your recovery is going well. I'm as fully recovered as I'm going to be. I still have stiffness in my ankle when I sit for a while, but it frees up after I've taken half a dozen steps, but at my age it could just be life catching up!!!
Hey, my cast was removed yesterday and x Ray came out just fine. This is 6th week after the surgery. When did you start putting your complete weight on your ankles and start walking. Also, your videos brought a light on a rainy day brought out all the motivation. Can't thank you enough.
Hello Chandra, thank you for your kind comments, and congratulations on your progress, getting the cast off is a big milestone! I had a moon boot after the cast was removed and found I could get about pretty soon afterwards, but the biggest help was doing the exercises the physio told me to do. I can't stress that enough. Good luck with your progress.
I'm 3 months post-op. I had the same fx & surgery u had. How many wks postop r u in this video?. I will add these excercises to mine, thank u. I still have pain at night. I'm still in my boot at 3mon & use a walker. U walk just awesome. I'm a retired nurse & never expected this to take so long but I also have nerve disease. My Dr said it will be a yr or more & I may never be 100% but I just want 2 b positive. Do u still elevate ur foot when not walking ?? Thank u very much just looking for advice. Ur doing wonderful 😁👍😁
Hello Ann, and thank you. I'm about 7-8 weeks post op in this video. I used to get pain at night too, but that's now gone, I can't remember how long it took, but it has gone. I'm coming up to 6 months post op now and still have stiffness in my ankle when I walk, but after a few minutes everything seems to get stretched and warmed up and I don't notice it much. Unfortunately if I stop for a few minutes it gets stiff again. I guess the moral of the story is to keep going! I no longer elevate my foot. I was wearing an elasticated compression sleeve every day which I got from Amazon. It was good for me, and helped manage the swelling and gave me a little bit more flexibility in my ankle. It was quite difficult to put on at first, because it's tight, but I did get used to it. I stopped using it when I went on holiday at the beginning of September - so just under 5 months post op - and although I still get a little bit of swelling around my ankle, I've decided it's not too bad and now leave it off. I'm now doing everything I used to do before my accident, it sometimes just takes a little longer or occasionally hurts, but it is getting better slowly. My doctor has said the same as yours, that exceptionally it could take 18 months before getting back to normal, but that the vast majority of people have forgotten all about it by 12 months. The best piece of advice I was given was to do the exercises my physio gave me. Keep going Ann, it's a long slog, but it does get better, and good luck.
@@aalmangleye6502 thank u so much. I added ur excercises to mine. The towel one really stretches. Oh my gosh it was tough at first. I wasn't doing my excercises as much as I should have. I think I became a little depressed. I never realized a fx ankle was such a long recovery but honestly u gave me hope & encouragement. I'm now doing it 3x a day also. I thank u for that. Have an awesome wk ahead 😁
Hello Hoor. I was able to walk with a limp after about 6-8 months. It took about 15-18 months to make a recovery to where I am now - 3 years later. I still have a very slight limp after I've been sitting for a while and then start walking, just for a few steps until my ankle frees up. Hope this helps.
Dearest !! Its quite a long time . Actually I broke my right ankle on 28th november 2021 and its displaced fracture . My ankle was broken and dislocated . Doctor fixed it with Rod , screws and plate . Now The rod has been removed after 8 weeks . I am in air cast boot right now . I am allowed to put weight but I think its only 50% at this time . My ankle is very stiff and tight .
@@hoornaqvi2553 Hello Hoor - it's a really nasty injury and takes time to recover. Doing physio when the time comes will make a big difference. Good luck with your recovery!
Which bones did you break and how long b4 you walked normal? I 6ms postop broke my my ankle fibula and tibula dislocation surgery still not walking right yet but hopefully soon every day is a new day
Hello Jason - I broke a bone on the left, right and back of my ankle and dislocated it too. It took many months to walk properly. The doctor said it could take 12-18 months and he was right.
@@aalmangleye6502 thanks for replying yes my os said the said same timeline. I'm sry I said wrong my right ankle 2 breaks on the outside and the knob on the inside. Could you reccomend what helped you in walking right? Cause I'm walking stiff leg like you are in this video?
Hello Jason, the thing that helped most was doing the exercises the physio prescribed. I did extra repetitions and did them three times a day. I also got an elasticated compression sleeve for my ankle from Amazon and this helped give support and kept the swelling down.
When did you start to ankle exercise? My dr. told me to do. Yesterday at dr. visit in 2 wks post op. Dr bent my ankle so hard after that I suffered tremendous pain all day. Now I can't trust him. Is it really ok to do joint exercise in 2 wks after surgery?
I think it depends on the injury, so no way to say what is normal for you. My surgeon placed plates on both of my bones as I broke them both just above the ankle and broke the small one two more times just below the knee. My surgeon told me I could put 50% weight on it the day I left the hospital (24 hours after surgery). I was amazed. Of course, it hurt too much to do that for several days. When I went to see his nurse practitioner 10 days later to get the splint off and the cast on, she told me to only put 10% weight on. I told her what the surgeon said and she said “Ok, we will go with 50% then.” I have a lot of confidence in my surgeon though so that helps.
Hello TaHa. I was able to walk with a limp after about 6-8 months but it took about 15-18 months for all the swelling to disappear and to walk normally.
After ankle dislocation how much time does it take to walk again as i am facing same injury & screws are applied bear my ankle your subcriber from India
Gaurav Khosla I suffered the same injury and surgery as our friend in the video. It took me about 4-6 weeks to walk after my surgery and that was with a walking boot, or air cast as some call it. To walk unaided by any crutches or air casts/air splints, I would say 12 weeks, but it really depends on how your body heals itself. I have been extremely lucky with my healing time and the ease of the whole ordeal. Physiotherapy is a huge part of recovery as well!
Is it normal to have pain after getting out of the walking boot and start walking it’s been one week out of it and the bottom of my foot hurts when I walk? thank you
JT, I was misbehaving, trying to relive my youth and attempted to jump off a ledge on my grandson’s stunt scooter to show him what I did when I was his age. It went much better in my mind’s eye, as indeed it did 55 years ago! Another scar to add to the collection.
Hello Manuel. Yes, when I had my surgery, they put in a plate and screws on the outside of my ankle. I also had breaks on the inside and at the back of my ankle, but the doctors were happy those breaks could be left to heal on their own. I'm normally squeamish, but I was awake during the surgery and watched on a monitor so could see the whole thing while they drilled and fixed the plate. It was weird!
My cast came off 4 days ago and its so stiff, but I can see flexibility changes every day doing there exercises. I had bimolleolar fracture, today I could step on the boot with minimal crutch help, amazing, having nice sleep and then walking and stretching… it really improves slowly ;) quick healing to everyone!
Hi Laura how are you now? I also had surgery for a bimolleolar fracture. I am out of a cast and now in a moon boot and can weight bear 25% as directed for another week then moving on to 50% in the next 2 weeks.
@@taminorman1673 Hi Tami! I am off the boot off the ankle brace, most of the stiffnes is reduced as exercise and stretching, I still have some but better and better every week even if I feel sometimes it stopped it is not! How are you feeling, if you are in the boot it will speed up and soon you won’t need crutches;) just do the exercises and they will help, even if it feels so stiff every exercise will improve it!
Thanks Laura :) i'm feeling ok. How long did they say you could weight bare? If you don't mind me asking. It has been such a slow process. However i'm doing my exercises every day. My ankle does hurt on one side a little bit but its still fresh so to speak. I find my foot gets swollen alot so i have been resting it quite a bit. I just feel fustrated that its taking another whole month just to get to 50% then they will probably make me take another month to get to 100%. Was it like this for you too? My ankle has 7 screws and a plate.
@@taminorman1673 No problem, it will take time, my surgery been in February and still have bit stiffness on the back of my ankle, but I didn't have time recently to train much. The boot is great, you will bare weight quickly, 2 weeks maybe. And then you get to the point doing it without the crutch for short distances, make sure you rest when it starts hurting. Will be swollen ,its normal, also red and flaky for a while. Don't worry just follow the physio guidance, I didn't have many appointments so I am sure they take better care of you. It will be slow but will get better and better, currently it's finally not swelling up that much and starting to feel my inner and outer ankle bone again as it looked before, not just a puff :D Same screw and plate....don't worry just celebrate small achievements, carefully strech those areas that are stiff. Its a slow recovery but happens, try to be patient wit yourself and not afraid if you can try more....
@@lauram2456 thank you :) i have been doing 50 of each exercise on my foot 3 times a day....except the alphabet. The most i will try is 15 as its too long. Thank you for your advice. :) My operation was in early May this year. I am thinking i will see another PT when its time to put 50% on it. When i go for my next appointment in July the hospital will do an xray and go from there. I know i have to be patient. I guess i am just worried as i need to get back to work.
I also had my ankle fracture surgery 6 week ago, and when I stand up my leg gets fully red and starts a itchy sensation within 10-20 seconds.. I don't know why it's happening, I had my tibia and fibula both bone fracture.. Plzzz suggests me, is this a common thing or I need to suggest my doctor...
I had my surgery on july 11th and I had my cast taken out on the 29th and I was given an air cast. It been a crazy 3 weeks. How long did u wear the boots? How long does it take u to walk without the aid of crushes or boots ?
Hello Iola, I had a cast after surgery which was removed after about 2 weeks and then had a non weight bearing cast for about 5 weeks or so and then a moonboot which I wore for a 2 or 3 weeks. By the 3 month stage I was well underway with original physio exercises and follow up exercises. I was walking without crutches about 5 days after starting with the moonboot, and dropped the moonboot a couple of weeks after that.
Hello Brenda, hope all is going well with your recovery. Everything I did in the videos was in accordance with what my consultant and physio said. I think seeing different comments on all of the videos 1-5 there are different approaches to this injury and also people recover at different rates. I do know it's a long road to full recovery though, so make sure you follow your doctor's advice and do what the physio says, it's the only way. Good luck!!!
@@taminorman1673 Hello Tami - don't over extend yourself, give it a miss for a few days and just do the others that you can manage, you may find that it's then a bit easier. It's a nasty injury and it takes a long time to fully recover, at least it did for me, well over a year, so think of it as a marathon and if it turns out to be a bit shorter that's a bonus. Try and keep up your spirits and celebrate the little milestones you reach, things you can now do that you couldn't a couple of weeks ago or things that are a bit easier to do - and when you do ..... eat chocolate and be a little mischievous, that usually works for me!
"Could have lost a foot" that's the way to look at it man, always on the positive! I suffered this injury when I was in my 20s

Hello Michaela, stick in with the rehab and you’ll be up and about before you know it. Good luck!!!

@@aalmangleye6502 Alright!

How is swelling

Hardware ect........
Thank you sir for your videos
I have a question . my sergeon told me to start wt bearing as tolerated but iam in so much pain and I realized that you walk right away after taking off the cast did it hurt when you put wt on it does PT help you to bear wt ?

I am having this surgery early next week. What was your time frame from the surgery to walking without crutches?
Hello, it was about 10-12 weeks.
Were your titanium implants removed?
Hello from Albania, thank you for sharing your experience, I have 9 weeks from my surgery, I walk on a crutch but I have knee pain.did you have this problem?
Hello Idvina - sorry for not replying sooner. Fortunately I didn't have any knee problems, I hope you are recovering well.
This video after how many weeks after surgery?
For how long you could walk with the boot on? I mean how long from your surgery
Ur doing wonderful
😁👍😁
Thanks Ann - keep going!

Did the inside of your ankle bone hurt after all this. Mines is quite sore the past couple days ive been doing these exercises
norfillyson - no, I didn’t have that. I could feel things stretching while doing the exercises, but that was all.
Hy dearest .. how long did it take you to recover and walk normal ?
Exercise 6 is a challenge. Can't feel my calf engaging at all.
I did extra repetitions
and did them three times a day.
Hello Nyjunie, it was about 7 or 8 weeks after my surgery when I saw the physio and started my exercises.
I am 6 wks out and havent been told to exercise.
I have same surgery can i ask how many time you take for walk normally again
Gaurav, it took me about 9 or 10 weeks after surgery and then I had to build it up.
Here in India, we dont have an option for walking boot, we have applied a plaster once it gets removed we can walk slowly slowly.

Can you walk normally now?
Is it normal to have pain after getting out of the walking boot and start walking it’s been one week out of it and the bottom of my foot hurts when I walk? thank you
Hello Beto, it takes a long, long time to recover. I could feel my ankle for many months afterwards.
How did you get hurt in the first place
JT, I was misbehaving, trying to relive my youth and attempted to jump off a ledge on my grandson’s stunt scooter to show him what I did when I was his age. It went much better in my mind’s eye, as indeed it did 55 years ago! Another scar to add to the collection.
Did you start these excercises the day they took the cast off?
norfillyson , I had an appointment with the physio about 3 days after the cast was removed and started the exercises then.
@@aalmangleye6502 ok thanx
Have question ?
You have hardware in you ankke?
Hello Manuel. Yes, when I had my surgery, they put in a plate and screws on the outside of my ankle. I also had breaks on the inside and at the back of my ankle, but the doctors were happy those breaks could be left to heal on their own. I'm normally squeamish, but I was awake during the surgery and watched on a monitor so could see the whole thing while they drilled and fixed the plate. It was weird!
How is your dorsiflexion,
Thanks for asking - it's about 99.9% of what it was, so almost perfect.
3 people didn't like the exercises.. I don't get it..
How much it take time to walk properly i am on 3 months up
Hello, after about 6-8 months I could walk with a limp but it took 15-18 months for a full recovery. Hope this helps.
My operation was in early May this year.
Sorry, I've no experience of what you describe. I suggest you contact your doctor in case it's something that needs attention.
Whether you comfortable walk now
Surely you should not have been completely weight bearing at this early stage
I am in same stage of recovery 😀😀
Hello Brenda, hope all is going well with your recovery. Everything I did in the videos was in accordance with what my consultant and physio said. I think seeing different comments on all of the videos 1-5 there are different approaches to this injury and also people recover at different rates. I do know it's a long road to full recovery though, so make sure you follow your doctor's advice and do what the physio says, it's the only way. Good luck!!!

Exercise 4 :/
Exercise 5 is easier!
@@aalmangleye6502 i found when i did exercise 7 i was limping really badly. I couldn't glide like you but it was my first day. I feel a bit down. :(
@@taminorman1673 Hello Tami - don't over extend yourself, give it a miss for a few days and just do the others that you can manage, you may find that it's then a bit easier.
@@aalmangleye6502 :) lol... thank you for the encouragement.
