who in gods name are the 29 people who would give this a thumbs down? Now that is just plain crazy. it doesn't get much better than a Dan Penn soul classic.
I wasn't sure how I felt about this version when I first heard it, but I got slowly reeled in to the point where I had to hear it at least once a day. Roughly 40 replays later, I can say that this is one of the most sublimely beautiful live soul performances it has ever been my privilege to listen to.
Love this version So much. Now you wouldn't think I would as I have always loved James and Bobby Purifys version a lot. This is So haunting.I am glad I love both versions.
Legends who both had that "Muscle Shoals" magic! I grew up 20 miles from Shoals and swam in the Tennessee river a 100 times or more hoping to hear it sing! Truly magical!
im glad there is 18 dislikes makes it easier for me to define friendships ,those who dislike this are never to be trusted or even acknowledged as human life form ,strange world indeed !!
Just sublime, one of the greatest songs ever written. This performance is absolute perfection. Two musicians at the top of their game. James Purify, one half of James & Bobby Purify, that had a big hit with this song, died on 22nd January 2021. Cause of death was Covid.
This is my favorite version of this song. Even more amazing is having Paul McCartney standing right behind them listening while he was waiting to go on. He was at that taping promoting his album run devil run.
i grew up with james and bobby purify's 1966 version. this is equally beautiful!! a truly great song isn't a white or black song. it is a template for a wide range of artistic expressions. penn and oldham wrote truly great songs.
Beautiful!!! This shows the power of how great this song is. Whether it be the full production number as recorded by James and Bobby Purify or this stripped-down version, the lyrics and melody are incredibly powerful.
First time I heard this version ..loved it before ..and now I love it more ..great writing on the part of these two and a great performance .....this is true and beautiful talent..unlike so much of todays songs and performers
these guys wrote and worked with all the great black soul acts aretha franklin/wilson pickett/solomon burke/otis reading etc etc they are legends with incredible history working out of muscle shoals studio mainly! amazing talent!!!
Poignant Soulful Penn and Spooner Oldham Rendition.. is one of the most beautiful love songs that’s lodged into the fibers of my heart .. and soul.. Gorgeous
I was not familiar with these artists. I know the pop version of this song from my teen years and I like it. But I was blown away by this recording. Penn is an emotive singer and he interpreted his poetry beautifully
Me too! Thought I was a soul woman - how could I be if I wasn't aware of their contribution? Watched them last night on a repeat of the same program. Had to play it again this morning. Sublime.
Dan Penn's soulful voice and deft phrasing gets better and better with age. He was always an A-List songwriter by anyone's measure. Now would be the time for Mr. Penn & Mr. Oldham to cut an acoustic album that capture the quality and integrity in this live performance and their equally masterful live rendition of Penn's Dark End of the Street. Oldham and Penn together work a kind of magic that's in short supply.
I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know who these two gents were. This clip was used in 'Classic Soul on the BBC' that was broadcast on BBC4 a few nights ago. I certainly know who they are now! Absolutely sublime version of their own song.
I've the original version by James and Bobby Purify in a vintage vinyl jukebox. As a record, it only got to #6 in the US hit parade, in 1966. They never had another top twenty hit. But I really like this. I wish I could play my electric piano as well. Just what you can do with a really simple tune
who in gods name are the 29 people who would give this a thumbs down? Now that is just plain crazy. it doesn't get much better than a Dan Penn soul classic.
Agree.....If this doesn't deeply move you, then there's something very wrong.
I wasn't sure how I felt about this version when I first heard it, but I got slowly reeled in to the point where I had to hear it at least once a day. Roughly 40 replays later, I can say that this is one of the most sublimely beautiful live soul performances it has ever been my privilege to listen to.
We heard this stunning version on jools Holland it gave us chills and we chose it as our wedding song
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
By the way folks, Dan Penn wrote this with Spooner and they were two key people at Muscle Shoals. Much respect!
Caught this on Jool's Holland show.Truly Beautiful.Watching it 2 or 3 times a week on UA-cam.
Love this version So much. Now you wouldn't think I would as I have always loved James and Bobby Purifys version a lot. This is So haunting.I am glad I love both versions.
Why do people call this a version? Love the original! Penn & Oldham!
In an era when the term Genius is often, and wrongly over used,THIS is pure genius and truly beautiful.
I watched this live on Jools...its like how music was created..like a Moses thing for me
Well put
Rare, beuatiful and wonderfully performed by those who wrote it.
Legends who both had that "Muscle Shoals" magic! I grew up 20 miles from Shoals and swam in the Tennessee river a 100 times or more hoping to hear it sing! Truly magical!
The revelation of another man's soul gives hope and comfort in the darkest of places. Beautiful.
Dan Penn is a great writer. And he has a very soulful voice and even though the Purify's had a nice hit, the writers know how to perform a song!
The 'Masters at Work' who can effortlessly make it look so easy. Pure class from two fantastic writers and performers. Superb Soul.
Should have a million views
Beauty song! I like both versions equally well! Today's music as nothing to compare, l feel sorry for this generation.
12 dislikes !!! what a strange world we live in, this is superb
im glad there is 18 dislikes makes it easier for me to define friendships ,those who dislike this are never to be trusted or even acknowledged as human life form ,strange world indeed !!
I love this music so much, but maybe, 12 people were in a bad mood and not ready for this love...
20 now we need their addresses hehehe
beatvampire In other words the dislikers are scum slugs? I agree with you..
How could anyone dislike this 🤷🏾♂️....this is perfection in motion!
I LOVE this man's voice. Heard him first time a couple of hours ago. Gorgeous.
Love both versions glad I have heard this version.Haunting
New year 2021 .. A truly staggeringly beautiful version of Puppet. How was this not a number 1 for Dan !
Absolutely sublime, brings a grown man to tears!!.
Soul to the max. They wrote some of the best songs ever..James and Bobby Purify got his melody perfectly, down to the ad lib on the out row. Salute!😎😎
Saw this 2 years ago and it still runs around my head, only sad I didn't know about it years ago. Pure Soul
One of the greatest songs ever. A strong statement but I would stand by it.
Absolutely sublime
Wow, wow wow wow, so so beautiful, and understated
I saw these guys in Melbourne in 1999, seriously one of the most amazing shows I have seen.
Just sublime, one of the greatest songs ever written. This performance is absolute perfection. Two musicians at the top of their game. James Purify, one half of James & Bobby Purify, that had a big hit with this song, died on 22nd January 2021. Cause of death was Covid.

i grew up with james and bobby purify's 1966 version. this is equally beautiful!! a truly great song isn't a white or black song. it is a template for a wide range of artistic expressions. penn and oldham wrote truly great songs.
One of the best by Oldham and penn the original
Beautiful!!! This shows the power of how great this song is. Whether it be the full production number as recorded by James and Bobby Purify or this stripped-down version, the lyrics and melody are incredibly powerful.

Poignant Soulful Penn and Spooner Oldham
Rendition.. is one of the most beautiful love songs that’s lodged into the fibers of my heart .. and soul..
Gorgeous
This refreshes me after a really hard day and really does pick me up when I amdown - sublime
Dann Penn and Spooner Oldham are the greatest duet classic soul writers of them all.
Outstanding. They are the very heart of Southern Soul.
Every time I hear this song it makes me appreciate life that much more😎
classic soul led me here, just magical.
I think he has a great voice ...and what makes it even better is that he is from Alabama!!!
human beings occasionally touch something truely sublime.
Amazing what the love and desire for a Woman can produce
I was not familiar with these artists. I know the pop version of this song from my teen years and I like it.
But I was blown away by this recording. Penn is an emotive singer and he interpreted his poetry beautifully
Amazing songwriter
Beautiful!
Me too! Thought I was a soul woman - how could I be if I wasn't aware of their contribution? Watched them last night on a repeat of the same program. Had to play it again this morning. Sublime.

Alastair Campbell .
Have to agree with you Alistair just heard it on BBC and it's January 2017
I mean 2018 were did that year go
Absolute, unrestrained magic.
The wonderful Bobby Womack does a rasping moody version of this too, luv Dan Penn southern twang , so much pain in his voice
This is on loop in my head! Freakin LOVE it!

Makes me want to cry
Wow. Surprisingly good.
Just superb.
Spooner is an outstanding song writer!
Sweet, generous, and fine in every way.

Just two good ol' boys from Alabama.
I am going to start wearing overalls and a sport coat, good look.
:P
The same with me Alexander and Brian, just watched it on BBC4 spellbound. A beautiful song.
I've the original version by James and Bobby Purify in a vintage vinyl jukebox. As a record, it only got to #6 in the US hit parade, in 1966. They never had another top twenty hit.
But I really like this. I wish I could play my electric piano as well.
Just what you can do with a really simple tune
The original version is actually by Dan Penn, the popular version was released a year later.
The Purify version was in the uk top ten in 1976. Strange the longevity of some songs.
Show em how it’s done fellas
Thank You for another beautiful song! My Friends.
Excellent!!
