HID Headlight (2004 Sienna) Inoperable

2004 Toyota Sienna with HID Headlights. One headlight inoperable and it is not the bulb. (179,000 + miles). This is the third time I have don this repair. I must say this is one design flaw for this vehicle. enjoy my video on replacing the headlight ballast.

I just drilled a small hole in the back of module cover so water can drain out and it’s working great no issues 230k on 04 sienna

Did you drill the hole when you first got the car? Did you drill any particular place on the cover?

Hi. I've just replaced the driver's side balast and hid bulb ( old bulb couldn't be removed in one part). Hid low beam works but the problem is it aims way to high. Trying to align it kinda helped but now high beam is too low ( high and low beam have the same screw to align). Any sugestios what could be the reason of the problem?

I don't have the van anymore for reference, but my van had a dial on the dash to adjust the beams up and down......left of the steering wheel.

@@projectfixit that dial is to be used when car is heavy loaded or towing. It aligns both left and right light. In my case the problem occured after changing the bulb and refers only to drivers side.

I have 2 questions:
1. Is it because the van
was in an accident, that causes the headlight to leak water?
2. How easy to downgrade the headlights to regular halogen?

1. I am sure the fender bender did not help much and may have increased the chances of the ballast failure. However, both sides had failed along with one bulb over the life of the vehicle prior to the fender bender. I just think the assemblies tend to get moisture in them especially in humid areas or regions.
2. This is a good question which I do not have an answer for. Sorry.

Hello .i had pass side low beam light burned . yesterday tryed to replace with the one i bought at amazon. when i put it in , turned it on . it started to heat and make a noise. .After 15 seconds it came off. Any idea why this happenned ? thanks for reply

I have an 04 and was told by the dealer that there was a problem with the 04 headlight leaking. my headlight gets wet inside from carwashes.

Put bulb in 1st and lock with spring clips. Then attach wire connector.
Pair of HID bulbs on Amazon $30.

Hey! Thanks for the video. I have humidity in my headlight assembly which I think is why my transformer may have gone bad. I want to replace the whole assembly but can’t find an HID specific assembly. Do you know if I can just buy the halogen assembly and place an HID transformer in it?

This is a good question which I do not have an answer for. I have thought about this, too. I suspect there might have to be a wire harness retrofit, but I am not certain. Therefore, I just continue to replace the transformers every few years. The good thing is they are becoming more economical in price and I am getting better at replacing them.

My van has the HID system. If your van bulb looks like mine in the video and replacing the bulb did no fix your problem, you probably need a new ballast/transformer as seen in my video.
