Medicare really should consider covering these, but they’re well worth the money and are much more maneuverable than the ‘approved’ chairs.

Seems silly to not cover the lightweight chairs. It would ultimately be more cost efficient. Medicare doesn't care how self-sufficient we are outside of the home, but it should.

Most people who live on Disability don't have the money to pay out of pocket for the non medicare chair

It absolutely makes no sense that the powers that be will only give us the obnoxiously big and heavy thing, and only if we need it in the house.

Just to let everyone knows... There are organizations that will help you pay for a nice portable chairs like this... Talk to your pastor or research programs in your area... I have the air hawk that comes with a suitcase and lots of free accessories... It is awesome... I can do lots of things now with my family, more mobility.

I have the heavy Permobile 300. I can't take it anywhere unless we hook up the trailer. The Harmar power carrier would not work for our van or truck.

I was approved for the “approved” chair through my insurance (not Medicare) and my out of pocket was half of what it would cost for me to buy the Eagle! Of course insurance wouldn’t cover anything for the cost of transporting the approved mammoth that wouldn’t fit through any doors in my home. Basically, I could got from my kitchen to living room in the open concept part of our house. Not useful at all! I was happy when I found the Eagle and felt as free as the birds the chairs are named after!

I don't know much about Medicare policy or insurance and what not but how these chairs are considered "recreational vehicles" is beyond me. I have experience with various kinds of chairs and am fully disabled. I prefer the smaller, lighter, folding chairs by a good margin. In all honesty the only difference is the seat and in my experience a fully upholstered chair does not always equal more comfort. And while I understand different users have different needs these folding wheelchairs should at least be an option if it suits a person's mobility needs. I've used larger chairs such as the "Medicare chair" and simply prefer the so called "smaller" light weight chairs. And taking a good look at the base/frame of the units the folding chairs are not really smaller but simply designed differently. I'm a big, tall guy, too. I throw an added seat cushion on and keep a spare battery handy and go anywhere and everywhere I want. Running low on battery charge? No problem. Just pop a battery out and pop a fresh one in. If in need of a taller chair these folding ones might not be for you as the seat height is significantly lower. But otherwise they're just as capable for daily use under ordinary conditions and have an advantage over the bigger, heavier ones in several ways.
