Normal chess teachers: The kings indian defence generally consists of a fianchetto and d4.
Hikaru: I believe it was the October of 1998...
Hikaru having blitz flashbacks
Insane memory
Man’s a audio book with a face
Hikaru: "I'm gonna say, somewhere around October 25th, 1998"
...me struggling to remember what happened last week.
This comment have 686 likes so my comment goes to all of them I want to ask is anyone know why this opening have indian word in its name I hope someone know please reply me
sorry Hikaru the kings indian is refuted by 3000 elo chess engines so i’m not going to play it in my 800 elo games
It's a classic opening
@@georgedan6270 sarcasm*
There's something special about a joke that really works well but only for a tiny demographic of people. I loled.
😂
Wait what? Kings Indian is too weak for ELO 3000? I might need another one then
Thank you so much Mr Nakamura I am now much more prepared to go up against someone playing the fianchetto kings Indian in 1997 or 1998 than I would have been other wise
In case of accidental time travel, we are all much more prepared.
Good luck
Just because I read this I'm gonna play the fianchetto today

Hey hikaru I just wanted to say thanks because yesterday the rating list (for New Rated players) was Published... It showed That I got a Rating of 1400 (I KNOW That It Isn't A Lot, But It means so Much to me) All Thanks To Your Videos... It's Lessons Like This That helped me Improve My Chess..
For instructive videos i highly recommend watching Daniel naroditskys videos
Keep going
Ghey
1400 is Perfect, keep going !
Congrats!
I remember when Hikaru won with Black using the King's Indian vs Magnus in a must win game.
Same with Boris that was one of my favorite games, my man sacrificed his queen 6 times (I think it was 6)
No you don’t
@@mattdiehl1706 Thanks Matt, very cool!
@@905LilO hahaha that was awesome
@@mattdiehl1706 Dementia is not a joke, Matt.
Please make more lessons like this
Hikaru played Kings Indian a lot in SCC this year and won.
he is one of the best KID players out there. So vs. Nakamura 2015 is a fantastic game showing this
He also played the Covid Gambit, but lost.
Edit : Reading your comment, you would mean last year technically because he got disqualified from the SCC in 2021 before 2022.
@@tenshi1333 Hikaru was dq'd from the CSL not the SCC. He just won the SCC a couple weeks ago for the 4th time in a row.
@@tenshi1333 no lol, he won the Speed Chess Championship - what are you on about? 23-8 against Wesley So in the final.
@@tommydashed4205 and now he won the SCC for the 5th time in a row.
This is great seeing more vids like this would be really nice
More videos like these!! Thank you Grand Master Hikaru
Hikaru, please make more Kings Indian vids, I actually watched Teimoir Radjabov games playing Kings Indian, he's definitely very good but after seeing most of your game plays on Kings Indian, I wanted your lessons soooo much more coz of the way you played, it was just brilliant
Thank you pls keep this series coming. I was struggling against fianchetto variation was very helpfull. Much love
Fianchetto* but I agree, these videos are awesome and I hope they keep coming
I’ve been looking for one of these for weeks now thanks so much!
I have been trying to understand this opening. Thank you for this
Prep back in the day: "if our opponent plays this move, we can trade here and win a pawn, otherwise we'll have to play this move"
Prep now: "the computer says to sack the queen for optimal piece activity"
Congratulations Hikaru my favorite player became blitz no1 .
HOW?! How does he remember the exact sequence of moves from some random game in Trinidad and Tobago (!!) 20 years ago?!
Thats the reason why these guys are at the very top level from a long time...that's simply due to tremendous concentration and freakin good memory!!
hey that's my homeland!
Bc he looked the game before showing it to the stream 🧠
How?? You give up sex with opposite gender
@@FlockOfYahweh so wheres the disadvantage at
love this hikaru
In 1998 Hikaru was competing at 10 years old. WILD
I love you Hikaru. Checkmate covid with kings indian. ❤love from india 🙂❤
Love from India..❤️
I love Hikaru doing videos like this, he should do some more
Could you do a video like how to play against certain openings? Like more beginner tutorial, say in this opening with both kings castles short we would usually go for this, in that opening for that… you know what I mean? Just what are the strengths and weaknesses of some common openings and would the game strategies be. I would enjoy anything from 5 minutes to one hour, I’m just curious how u see these. Hm?
Look up Jozarov's chess channel. He has a big kings indian theory playlist. Also some other openings
@@oom_boudewijns6920 thanks for the tip, havent seen those. Anyway, I just wanted to see Hikaru’s point of view and explanation specifically.
Good video as always
I was 8 months old, that day. Now I am learning that defence!!
That beginning was kinda XD but thanks!
I love play against king’s Indian but maybe I’ll try play kings Indian.
Hikaru the GOAT of KINGS INDIAN
Hikaru remembers the date time location and round from ‘98. Smh. Impressive
Hey I am so happy since I got 1100 Elo points in lichess by playing only kings Indian as black and I played for a month!!
Good going bhai
Congrats
at that level openings don't matter you just need to not hang too many pieces and take the pieces that the opponent is hanging
@@veni1 I mean I'm that level and sometimes that's true but setting up my openings allows for easier play
Where did you learn theory ?
Damn nice. + Hikaru talks so fast lol
Hi Hikaru, I just started learning chess and bought GingerGM's book on Black Lion. Do you think this is worth learning or should I focus on other things? I'm currently finishing up Bobby Fisher Teaches Chess, 1st section of Silmans Endgame book, and the Tao of Chess
breakdown of Boris v hikaru
Hey Hikaru .. hope you're feeling better
You are fast nakamuru !!
Me watching this 3 days before a tournament : So... I'll just use Wayward Queen
Black bishop at f5 would be a great move ig
very helpful
I want to go back to the 90's lol. Good video :)
Me: "Did I eat breakfast this morning?!"
Grandpa Hikaru: "The year was 1998. It was a beautiful Tuesday evening, as I prepared for the 413th tournament in my career..."
"basic preparation" lol...
can you do a speedrun king's Indian
I can confirm that game in 1998 was against me.
Hunk
Punk
Me: How do you play the KID?
Levy: So let's say you're using the London system...
Next Caro Kann please!!
This one time at band camp
i play better and see more moves after watching the speedruns and the matrix bullet vids... but these lessons never really do it for me... im mostly focused on how he can remember specific moves in specific game all the way back to the 90s... that always throws me off
If Chucky was talking he would come up with at least dozen of games and positions from the top of his head instantly. Naka is very vague and brief compared to what you get from Chucky.
1997, wasn't Hikaru like 10 years old back then?😂
Hello GM Hikaru. I am a big supporter and I am so excited you are going to be fighting it out in the Candidates Tournament. My constructive criticism is that you go through the lines way too fast and skip over some of the transitions. This makes your absolutely amazing teaching difficult to study.
Hikarus memory is indescribable
Why does Hikaru always look like he just finished swallowing or eating or something😂
guys can you explain what is the point to trade black bishop vs white knight at 01:51 ?
Too fast 😂😂
Si a Good teacher
The main thing I’ve learned here is that chess has given Hikaru a lot of opportunities to travel.
The kings indian of 1998
"back in the old days" when my sneakers were new
YOU ARE A G I LOVE U VIDS
Hikaru is probably the most dangerous player with the King's Indian
Someone has never heard of Kasparov....
@@TheFlagMaster.
Someone doesn't know that Kasparov f*cking retired lol
Your a genius and i cant wait for you to win the singfield cup again
hikaru can i request on how you face against the Italian game as black. cause i always lose when i am black and face against the Italian opening.
35-40 more watches and I’ll have this down.
watching at half speed, to keep up
im 14 elo, the Sicilian gambet defense mechanism is a better opening than kindian king defense
Hey Hikaru, howzit? Feelin recovered? Congrats on a performance and the rating thing ;) Anyway not sure in which hotel u got stuck, but if u able to walk around, there are few music jam sessions close in the city center. Maybe keen to join (i guess blues vibe)? Drinks on us!
It's pronounced "2 bay go" but glad you visited!!! 💫🤟🙌🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹

Hello, thanks for the tutorial, maybe you could do other slow (more slover :))tutoril with black... For example I like the speed of teaching pokimane. For me it is very helpful I believe that it can help more people. THX for ur content:)

Hey hikaru you should change the title of "How Hikaru Play King's Indian Defense"
Hi from Trinidad and TobAgo 😄
Theory and Computers ruin the experience of Chess.
The whole idea of Chess is the struggle between minds, but when memorization of move orders, theory and computers come into play, the art, the inspiration of the struggle is gone, and becomes inhuman.
@ShoryukenPunch Trust me, I can see why he gave up on Chess, with the pattern recognition, memorization, etc. But the greatest struggle in Chess is seen through taking what one has learnt and pitching your skills and creativity against someone else of equal stature, in terms of Chess.
And, no, I am not. I am way younger than him.
@@Raziel2404 he was joking its irrelevant that you're younger 😂 he died a while ago
Before computer there were books. Memorization was always a part of the game.
Gms playing bongcloud
And he lost a lot of games, does that mean its a bad opening ?
No, Kings Indian is a reputable opening. Openings are only meant to create playable positions, and from the end of the opening is the middle game where anything can happen, such as blunders and mistakes which could lose the game or go into an endgame where the same could happen.
Wait, so there is such a thing as a non-fianchetto King's Indian?
He’s referring to the fianchetto variation that white chose to go into with g3.
2:13 Isn't a pawn hanging on b7?
it goes into a even line where white loses a pawn for a queen trade, so its not really a hanging pawn. since after Qb7, kb6,
its more pirc defense
Pirc is against E4
Hikaru is a cutie
Volume is too low.
I can't.. xD
Bruh i cant see the pieces because of the subtitles
Back in the old days - Hikaru Nakamura
Chess has been around for centuries.
Engines haven't been tho
I tried the king indian defense against my mom , it didn't work hikaru why?
Me: lost the track and started day dreaming at about the middle
Hikaru: so there you guys go
Me: wakes up... so uhm do I watch it again or do I pretend I get it...
😂😂😭😭
Who can better explain Kings Indian defence than the best modern opening player in the world.
No one likes French defense. No one does tutorials😞
Nakahumo
Dude slow down. We're not SGM 3500 ELO chess supercomputers. lol
What chess app allows what his doing with the chessboard (with the arrows, red squares)?
@@mossjohnson thank you
You just weak ma boi 😂
is he still in Poland?

How are you??
Hikaru, you’re the only one who pronounces ‘fianchetto’ correctly.😂👌👌
I’m just saying that I’d like more of these lessons I’d you can them Hikaru
