    Thanks for watching. This mower's self propel "kinda" worked but the fix was not easy.

    I repaired an old school Snapper transmission using a parts diagram. It was time-consuming but it was my mower and I did find the repair process very satisfying; particularly considering the cost of a new transmission.

    A zip tie can be used as plastic filler for building up parts and as long as a Snapper got a sniff of their 00 grease once in a wile there was NEVER a problem with the rear end. My 89 was flawless but the one I got that was DRY and FULL of leaves just took a new pinion gear and just went right on running. 00 grease is in between gun grease and oil, a gun grease that sags. I used it in all matters of things and can be gotten at Tractor Suppy called 'Cotton Picker Spindle Grease' but still has the 00 number, just not the Snapper prefix. Good stuff and Happy weekend!

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  6 днів тому

      yes I've used the zip ties like that before. I'll need to get a hold of some grease, however since oil came out of this one, that's what I put back in.

    I would definitely attempt that repair and or replacement never a nylon or plastic gear set with oil bath like that all the ones I have taken apart were dry or a amount of white lithium grease and I have never seen sealant oozing from the covers and on the actual primary and planetary gears

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  6 днів тому +1

      you know what you're right. The times I've taken one of these apart, it's typically grease but that was Front wheel drive. Since this one is mostly plastics, that's why it's oil.

    • @matthewwearsch242
      @matthewwearsch242 6 днів тому

      I don't think they originally came with oil because typically petroleum based oil will soften and degrade most plastics and even quicker when heated.Its not like that application is a rear differential like on a rear wheel drive truck or car

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  6 днів тому +1

      from the owners manual, the 2 lubricants were either gear oil or lithium based grease. Since this one is not the metal case which requires the grease, it must be the gear oil.

    Nice repair video, bro! I’ve never seen a lawnmower transmission torn apart. I am a small engine mechanic, but still fairly new to the trade and haven’t had to tear into a transmission yet.

      thanks man. If I was working at a repair shop or if I owned it, I would not recommend this fix because of warranty issue not to mention time. Most consumers would never pay to have this repair done and with no guarantees either.

      @ I hear ya. My dad opened up a transmission (may be a CVT as it is variable speed, no “set” speeds) on a 20 year old Husqvarna mower one time and fixed it successfully. He gave me the mower and I still have it. I’m looking to sell it. The unit is a 1999 model with some kind of plastic or fiberglass deck, still in solid condition. Has a 5.5 hp Briggs Quantum on it. So yeah,it’s 26 years old now, and still fires right up.

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  4 дні тому +1

      nice, but you don't want to hold on to it and use it? Sounds like a great mower.

      @@HomeGaragechannel True story: I struggle with that very decision.. It’s 26 years old without a spec of rust on the deck. It was given to me by my uncle. Before that, It was given to him by a neighbor. I gave it to my dad and he went through it, fixed the transmission and then years later, gave it back to me because he & my mom have a very large yard and don’t need it. Needless to say, it’s “been around the block”. 😂 It was hardly used during the time my dad and I have had it. It does smoke a bit on startup, but then quits once it warms up. I keep an eye on the oil level. I thought about putting a 20w-50 oil in it and see if that eliminates the smoke on start up. Otherwise it starts easy and runs like a clock.
      I also have a Toro 22 inch mower that’s practically brand new. It was given to me. I think it was used once. The previous owner stated that the self propel didn’t work. I turned it over and the only problem is the pulley on the shaft was not the correct one for the motor shaft diameter. I don’t know how a mistake like that was made at the factory. It had a battery-electric motor. If you know anything about Toro’s, their battery-electric mowers are built just like their gasoline counterparts, except they have an electric motor. I took the motor off, replaced it with a sweet “Briggs & Stratton Professional-Series” 175cc OHV engine that came off a Troy-Bilt mower that I had new since 2010 or so. The self propel pulley from the Toro fit perfectly as this engine shaft has a larger diameter. The Briggs motor is still a beast. I knew when I bought it, the engine would outlast the rest of the Troy-Bilt, and I was right. I’d put that engine up against a Honda GCV any day. It’s built better and more heavy duty. I’ve change the oil, replace the plug, replaced the flywheel key when I hit a root (didn’t bend the shaft) and adjusted the valves once. So, in my view, I have a brand new Toro Personal Pace mower for free. The engine on it is as good as new, even after all these years. There’s no carbon build up in the muffler. So, what would you do? Keep the old Husqvarna and the new Toro, or the new Toro and sell/give the Husqvarna?
      I have a 1 acre yard so I usually mow with a rider. However, I’ve used a walk behind before I bought a used rider. I now use the walk behind for the edge work and a hill. I value your thoughts as I watch many of your videos.

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  2 дні тому +1

      I have yet to get a hold of a Toro with a battery, but maybe this year. Also the 175cc engine is fantastic, at least in my opinion, too bad so many people neglected them. Wow, it's been a long time since I've mowed an acre with a walk behind. It took hours to do. Can't do that anymore at my age, so I'll just keep it as a memory from years ago. And thanks I appreciate your time watching.

    I’ve got a mid 2000s craftsman 22” front wheel drive mower that tends to not go straight with self propel activated. Would that be an issue with the wheels being worn out on the axles, or maybe the gears might be stripped. Besides that it runs fantastic, starts in 1-2 pulls has the tried and true reliable Briggs & Stratton 6.75. Got it for free from a neighbor and after about ten bucks and some carb cleaning I got it running in a couple pulls. Heck of a lot more durable than some of the cheap junk we get these days. Your channel is one of the several channels that have helped me learn to diagnose and fix many running issues with mowers and two stroke machines. If you possibly have an answer for the issue with it going straight, or maybe you already have a video on it, that would be awesome. Great video as always, and thanks again.

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  6 днів тому

      thank you so much for the compliment. As for the mower, I would have someone start it, left of the front and activate the drive. Then I would "carefully" grab the front wheel and see how much force it takes to make it stop. If both take the same amount to get them slow down, the issue is not the drive but could possibly be a wheel alignment issue.

    I recently picked up a Troy Bilt Tb110 with a Briggs 140cc engine for $10. The deck was in rough shape and the seller said it was locked up, so I bought it for parts. It turned out to be a bad recoil and I had a better deck for it, so I ended up swapping the deck and getting it running. It's running great, but it is definitely running fast. I have never adjusted engine speed on one of these. Which direction do I bend the tab to slow the engine? I don't want to risk bending it the wrong way and speeding the engine up any more.

    • @HomeGaragechannel

      @@HomeGaragechannel It took over 2 hours total, and it requires a special tool to remove the flywheel/chipper underneath. You basically have to separate EVERYTHING to get to the pulley on the crankshaft to install the belt and then re-assemble it all. Luckily, it only gets a couple hours use every year, so it should last quite a while. If a customer came to me with the problem, it would likely be too costly a repair with the time investment and parts.
