My domino did the same thing when it was new out of box until I cleaned the pivot and re-oiled the bearings. From what i've seen/read most of the spyderco flippers have a relaxed/weak detent for use of the opening hole.
Some flippers just flip differently and require different methods of flipping deployment. I thought this was just kind of known in the knife realm. I love mine. Detent isn't like a Shiro obviously but all it takes is to move my index finger toward the back of the flipper. I see this as a non-issue personally.
To each their own. For my money, I expected something that flipped better then the one I got. I understand this is a production knife and some are not like this. I will say though, for it's price range it has the worst action I've felt (maybe only some Hinderers are worse or equal). If you see it as a non-issue you should get one. If you like it and are happy, then I'm happy for you.
BT Blades I bought mine a couple weeks ago. I wonder if you just got a lemon? It's possible I suppose and I do agree that for the money you spent there shouldn't be a detent problem like that. Anyways, love your videos. My heart broke when I missed out on that Thorburn.
I called the retailer I bought it from and they checked a few others and said the detent was weak on those too. Maybe it's just the run of knives the one I got was apart of, but I returned it and I still have plenty of other knives to carry! Lol.
Perhaps if you kept it a few days you might get used to the detent for flipper deployment. I think as you stated it makes it easier to use the Spydie hole.
I hate light detents... my Hinderer was so light the blade unsheathed and cut me when I reached into my pocket. Can only carry it tip down now without feeling paranoid about it.
My detent is not weak at all on mine. Drops free and flips flawlessly.. not sure really. It's my favorite flipper right now just as a testament to how smooth the action is and how well made the knife is overall. Oiled up the bearings and gave it a nice cleaning.. knife is truly fantastic. Shame about yours man.
I snatched the Rubicon 1 on sale. Same characteristics as the magnitude. The liner lock bar is not easy to get to. When the magnitude came out I was debating but this nailed the coffin. It has everything i want, Ti, Real CF, sick grind. That's really sad all of Peter Carey's collabs' with Spyderco have been flops in my eyes. Thanks for the review Bobby. Do you see your self keeping it?
The liner lock is definately not easy to get to. I agree, this knife had everything I was looking for also "Ti, CF, and that grind", but I'm pretty disappointed with the action. No, I'm going to return it.
BT Blades when it comes to production flippers usually zt knocks them out great. Also these Chinese companies have been dropping nice pieces which I hope gets these American companies to put more effort into the designs
Yeah, I've been checking out WE knives, Reate, and Kizer for a while now. WE has some very interesting designs! I also been wanting to check out Reate's collaboration with Liong Mah the Warrior 2.
The two or three I've handled at my local shop where def not like that. The detent was strong and they flipped great. That's weird. However knife was way way to thick for me to even consider carrying.
The thickness doesn't bother me. I just wish this one had a stronger detent. There is a local shop here that sales Spyderco, but they want full retail price. This is the only one I've handled.
Chris RTW I know he bought it. Sample meaning one of many. You can't just make an assumption about the detent on all magnitudes based off of his. Mine has a strong detent, should I make the assumption that all Magnitudes have a strong detent? Of course not.
Disagree, this knife is perfect. The detention is perfect for the spidy hole. The flipper is a bonus and I essentially like the flipper tab as a protection for my hand slipping onto the blade. My EDC.
I totally agree, that detent is rediculas. They could have made that detent stronger and you still would have been able to use the spyderco hole to deploy it. I don't understand what these manufacturers are thinking. Isn't this knife almost 300 bucks? What a let down. IMO, spyderco still dosnt understand how to design a good flipper. I have owned three spyderco southards and was not happy with the flipping action.
Jeez, how many times are you going to say that you don't like the detente? We get it, we really do get the idea the first time. Shorten all that down to 10 -15 seconds max please.
Beautiful knife, really like the blade and agree that the Nirvana blade finish should be this one. I wouldn't expect a flipper made in 2016 to have that weak of a detent. The flipper knife buying public doesn't go for that! I am not into flippers anymore so I wouldn't want that knife anyway.
I wouldn't fake it. I really don't like making negative videos, but I though people should know it has a weak detent. I would call the store and ask if it has a weak detent or handle one in person before ordering this knife again.
BT Blades Great video, you are correct with the detent statement. I received my today and love not to sure on the clip, do you know of any aftermarket ones?
BT Blades Man I think I did this backwards, I bought the Magnitude and love it, then I bought the southard. The southard isn't nearly as good of a flipper as the Magnitude. Imho
This is a first , Spyderco putting out a knife with such a weak detent. First your Nirvana has some rust now this. Spyderco better step up their QC. JUST SAYING...
Your video was fine imo.Too bad about the detent.I wonder if Spyderco could correct the problem if you sent it to them? It is an obvious defect. Thanks for the video. I was about to order one but the weak detent changed my mind.
My domino did the same thing when it was new out of box until I cleaned the pivot and re-oiled the bearings.
From what i've seen/read most of the spyderco flippers have a relaxed/weak detent for use of the opening hole.
This is the weakest of them all! I've owned a Southard and a Domino and they both flipped fine, but you see this one.
The blade is one of best I've seen imo 👍
just recieved mine 30 minutes ago and Love it....

ZT detents have spoiled us...
Interested 2 see how the new compression lock flippers work ⏳☆
Perhaps if you kept it a few days you might get used to the detent for flipper deployment. I think as you stated it makes it easier to use the Spydie hole.
I hate light detents... my Hinderer was so light the blade unsheathed and cut me when I reached into my pocket. Can only carry it tip down now without feeling paranoid about it.
I love the look. It's a shame it doesn't flip. I did have a Hinderer with similar action. I worked on it but it still not great.
I already returned it. I love the look also, but couldn't get past the action.
My detent is not weak at all on mine. Drops free and flips flawlessly.. not sure really. It's my favorite flipper right now just as a testament to how smooth the action is and how well made the knife is overall. BT Blades Man the Warrior looks great. Do you carry your Andre Thorburn much. I've been looking for a left handed version for a while
I do, my next video is probably going to be on the A2 Tanto I have. I love the L51, but I carry my Shirogorov 95T or a Sebenza 21 most days.
The two or three I've handled at my local shop where def not like that. The detent was strong and they flipped great. That's weird. However knife was way way to thick for me to even consider carrying.

Good to hear someone tell it like it is.
Yeah, I wish someone told me! Lol. I don't think I would have bought this one.
BT Blades yours is a sample. Doesn't mean they're all like this. Mines not.
It's not a sample. he bought it, most have the same problem.
Chris RTW I know he bought it. Sample meaning one of many. You can't just make an assumption about the detent on all magnitudes based off of his. Mine has a strong detent, should I make the assumption that all Magnitudes have a strong detent? Of course not.

Yes, the Nirvana would be perfect with this finish! Pretty disappointing detent on this one.
Same with Mantra 3 ! Flipper a beat too smooth ...
This is not push button flipper.use light switch
Man that blows dude........... Put it back in the box with a note saying the knife sucks eat me!!!!!!!!
I'm going to mail it back, but I'm probably not going to put a note in the box that says "eat me"! Lol!
Get a gec knife try a traditional knife you'll love it!!!!!!!
I had to laugh when you demonstrated the flipping action with the other knives lol. looks so much better than the rubicon
They are way better than the Magnitude ... I knew what you meant! :)
That's a shame. I do love that blade though.
Me too! I really like the whole design of the knife!
That is a shame.. I just scratched it off my list. Great videos Bobby.
i was doubting you until @6:50 ... that really sucks
I wouldn't fake it. I really don't like making negative videos, but I though people should know it has a weak detent. I would call the store and ask if it has a weak detent or handle one in person before ordering this knife again.

It just seems to be one Spyderco flipper after another
My $30 CRKT Swindle fires better than that. Nice knife otherwise. "Aside from THAT Mrs Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play"?
I agree, nice knife, horrible action.
Ive had knives like that, that would eventually break in and smooth right up. Not that big of a deal.
I've never had a knife get a stronger detent over time.
This is a first , Spyderco putting out a knife with such a weak detent. First your Nirvana has some rust now this. Spyderco better step up their QC. JUST SAYING...
Or they can hire me as a consultant! They can pay me in knives. Lol.
Looks like leftover parts from rubicon
can you do some videos not repetitively flicking the knife and mumbling?
Probably not.
BT Blades Lol. I love the fact that you flip the knives in your videos. I never noticed the mumbling.
Jordan Mitchell Your knife vids are great. Oh wait
Your video was fine imo.Too bad about the detent.I wonder if Spyderco could correct the problem if you sent it to them? It is an obvious defect. Thanks for the video. I was about to order one but the weak detent changed my mind.
