Yes, that is why it's not D standard (DGCF) but DROP D (DADG). That means that it's E standard (EADG) but the E string is "dropped" two steps (one whole note) down, to D. This way you can play Drop D and D standard songs along with everything that has a "half step down" version of any of them (D# etc).

It won't break your bass in half because you are loosening the string in order for it to get a deeper note.
Did your dad's bass snap yet? Kids these days tuning a full step down (basically like doing heroin) on one string gosh 🙄🤬
