  • Once a year we make the voyage south to our annual Salmon Camp. Our intent is to dip our winter supply of Red Salmon. We can usually accomplish our goal in 3-4 tides and get back home fairly quick. It is a lot of fun to camp out and live by the timing of the tides. By day 3 you find yourself in sync with the ebbs and flows of the natural world and it all starts coming together. Similar to “River Zen”, a term I use to describe a headspace I get into usually around my 3rd day on the river… this would be a form of “Tidal Zen” I suppose. However, by day 3 I feel my rhythm is in cadence with the natural flow of life. It’s a good feeling of deep connection to the environment. Things start to click and work out. And then it’s time to pack up and get back home to our local rivers and creeks. But now the pressure is off to procure enough salmon to get through Alaska’s long, dark winters.
