Duran is winning at this point & he won the whole fight clearly, it was very competitive but you cannot deny Roberto this victory... arguably the greatest single win in boxing history if you take on board this was a prime Leonard & Duran was the smaller guy & had had 72 (71-1) fights under his belt going into the fight, amazing performance (by both men)
IMO the 2 best fighters since Muhammad Ali.

You're absolutely right! And I'm absolutely wrong!
I don't know what I was thinking about at the time of my earlier comment, but your concise and yet profoundly informative response has helped me to see the light.
I don't know what line of work you are currently in, but with your flair for language and sophisticated negotiation skills you really should think about a career in politics.
    :-)

That huge right hand at the end of the 8th was a big punch in the fight. In rounds 5-8 the momentum was starting to shift Sugar Ray's way. His hand speed and brutal body attack on the inside was getting to duran a little bit and Roberto looked like he was maybe starting to slow down.
Than all of a sudden...BANG!! Big right hand and from the ninth on Duran got his second wind and took back command of the fight

Ray got rocked @ 1:16 and held on for dear life. I remember this fight as if it were yesterday. Duran is truly one of the greatest fighters that ever lived. Sugar Ray was one of the greatest welterweight that ever lived. If Ray was fighting today, he would clean up the welterweight division.

The thing you gotta love about Leonard is he can change his style and fight any way he needs to. He can run away and jab but can also go toe to toe if he wants to.

I live in Vegas currently & in the past; I've run into Floyd on several occasions; in a related story; I met him for the 1st time at the old Tower Records on Sahara ave.; he was cordial we talked boxing & he even gave me his business card due to the fact that I was there with a musician friend & he was also dabbling in music production. Anyways we talked boxing; it was before his 1st fight with Castillo, he was a bit arrogant & I even remember warning him on how tough & complex Castillo could be

@TRIPLESIXSICCNESS Well, everyone's entitled to their opinion i guess. What's your scorecard like at this stage in the fight? Which rounds do you think I've got wrong, and why? I'm not trying to attack you, I'm just genuinely interested in finding out which rounds we disagree on...

Rounds 7 and 8 are very very close. I've given them both even. Duran goes in with his head quite a lot at the start of rd 9. No warning from the ref. But, then again SRL has been holding all night and the ref has let it go, so it's all fair.
    Fantastic fight.
    Rd 1: Duran 9 - Leonard 10
    Rd 2: Duran 10 - Leonard 9
    Rd 3: Duran 10 - Leonard 9

    Rd 5: Duran 9 - Leonard 10

This was the greatest era in boxing, for 2 reasons...1) there was 4 alltime greats at there peak in the same wieghtclass,..and 2) They all fight eachother!.....Im 31 & I wish I was born about 15 yrs earlier so I coulda witnessed this era with the knowledge I have now,...But I dont agree with the people saying that Pac & Floyd aint on these guys level! Pac, Floyd &Martinez are absolutely on the level as these guys,..Lets not get TOO caught up in this fight and lose touch with reality fellas lol

These older fighters were better "fighters" than Floyd but definitely not better "boxers". I can tell you one thing, in a Floyd fight, you clearly see who is winning the entire fight with picture perfect clean punches. The older guys were more like warriors, punching hard and often. Floyd is more like a professor. I love the hard nose fighting of the vets but I'd rather see the perfection of Floyd. Big ups to the big four(Duran,Leonard,Hearns and Hagler).

Leonard was fighting the 30 seconds then tried to steal the round fighting the last 30 seconds.
Duran took at least 6 of the first 7 if not all seven! The announcers had Duran up by about a point? Even they are fooled by the steal a round technique!!!! Lol

@adrenacrumb And the so called n" no mas " fight against Leonard , Leonard asked for the rematch inmediatly not giving Duran enough time to prepare ; Two weeks before the fight Duran's corner asked for the fight to be postponed because Duran was not in shape . Of course Leonards corner denied for the petition to postpone the fight .

@yomi76 Rd 7 was clearly RD, you are listening to Ferdie too much, Duran is eating up Leonard so far. He goes on and on about how great Leonard is and no mention of a lightweight moving up and pushing around a true welter. Rd8 is Duran as well, Leonard is missing a lot, Duran is landing clean and heavy shots.

Give Leonard a break...you would be holding on if you were in there with Duran. Take a couple of bodyshots they don't feel so good. I would hold just to piss my opponent off. Its not only boxing it's psychological warfare too.

Rd 7 Ta,..both guys obviously winded,..alot of posturing in the middle,..duran forcing him into the ropes,..nuthing substantial by either..final minute duran scores to thehead n body with hooks, leonard tries to fight back, solid hooks by roberto at the 30 second mark, leonard missing badly,..durans round..barely

I agree with you about Mayweather Jr being hyped & he is afraid to lose, as his undefeated record (42 -0) is his only claim to "greatest boxer ever". - lol - Larry Holmes was 48 -0 or 49 -0 before he lost a questionable decision to M Spinks. However, Holmes was not a braggart like Floyd Jr and never hyped his 48- 0 record as a claim to "greatest boxer ever ... in a league of his own" ... like PBF. What BS!

Leyendas!!!

If you had bothered to watch a full Duran fight in his prime you`d feel really stupid about saying stuff like that... Duran pisses on floyd career wise and head 2 head.... its an insult to Duran or Leonard to mention floyd in the same sentence, these guys fought each other to settle p4p best, floyd had his chance & fucked it up vs a much easier opponent in pacquiao, he doesnt deserve to be ranked alongside these 2 legends & because him & pacs actions neither ever will be. The end.

pacquiao fought him after he came off that dreadful lost to Margorito.
    plus he was weight drained...
yes floyd could of won the fight easy, just look at the first 5 rounds, he simply out boxed the guy.
6-10 he started laying on the ropes making the great cotto miss some shots, but give cotto credit for keep fireing....it was a great fight.
floyd & cotto are world class fighters, floyd is gonna expose the great manny pacquiao((the boy is great)) but his not in floyds class.!

he more or less just shrugged off my comments(in a conceited manner); which is totally cool that's his prerogative he didn't know me from the next guy & there we were talking boxing. But he knew that I knew my shit because we talked about other peripheral boxers of the era. The point is Mayweather didn't do or look so hot that night vs Castillo; Jose Luis was flat out robbed that night; so in essence Floyd should have 1 loss.
but let me guess, your probably OK with that bullshit decision?

@jason60152 How does he not have a chance against the top welterweights when he has a better welterweight resume than Mayweather and two ATG welterweight champions on it, including one of the top 3 greatest welterweights of all time? He beat Hall of Fame welterweight champions Cuevas (albeit at 154), Palomino and top P4P ATG Leonard at his very best. That makes Mayweather's resume at 147 look like turd. Considering he has already beaten the top welterweights OF ALL TIME kind of kills yr theory.

The level of talent Hearn"s era had Mayweather has not even dreamed of . Sugar Ray had chin , and Power thats why he beat Hearns . Mayweather has defence but lacks power , and chin .

  • @bteniswood

@jason60152 Really? lol! Mayweather has beaten more HOFers than Duran? Considering no one that Mayweather has beaten is in yet, that's a little hard to say no? Christ, some of you guys are tools. Unless you missed it the first time, Duran DID beat the top welterweights. He beat arguably the greatest welterweight outside of Ray Robinson. That is a lot more than Mayweather has ever gotten close to doing. That is not arguable. Who is the best 147er Mayweather has beaten? Judah? lol.

so honestly speaking what did you think of Floyd's performance against Cotto??

  • @judaschongo

why do you bring up Marciano? is that an attempt to look smart on your part? Rocky was a tough customer no doubt; but come on! his level of competition was no where near Ali's or Duran's for that matter. He fought an over the hill Louis then acquired the belt from a past his prime Jersey Joe; then had a rematch; 2 of his notable defenses were against Light-Heavyweights: Charles & Moore.
Duran wouldn't make your top 20?? who gives a fuck! that's why he's ranked 5th by Ring Magazine!

whatever yeah he was injured but he lost that fight! Castillo didn't knock him out huh? well did Mayweather KO Castillo? hell no! instead it was your typical back-peddling evasive boring ass performance from Floyd.
on the level of Ali & Leonard?? WOW! I don't know what else to say to you?
